Punjab Kings (PBKS) secured a four-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in an exhilarating IPL 2025 Match 49 on April 30, 2025, at MA Chidambaram Stadium. After CSK posted a total of 190, PBKS managed to knock together 192 with two balls to spare - and did so under serious bowling pressure from CSK. Let’s take a look at the reasons CSK lost this match.

The over-the-top total for one reason was that CSK could not defend 190 because of poor bowling and inability to take a wicket. In particular, Shreyas Iyer (72) and Prabhsimran Singh (54) were a little too good for the CSK bowling attack of Matheesha Pathirana (2/45) and Khaleel Ahmed (2/28)—even after Sam Curran scored 88 off only 47 to give CSK a good platform. The CSK bowlers were either too consistent with their bowling or swung too wide in a manner not conducive to defending the target, despite impressive contributions by Pathirana and Ahmed. Under pressure from aggressive powerplay and middle-overs play from Iyer and Singh, CSK looked incapable of responding in their mode.

This was clearly a very interesting contest. There were some quick runs from Shashank Singh (23 off 12) in an effort to fire the team home in the end, but the real responsibility lay with CSK's death bowling led by Ravindra Jadeja (1/32) and Pathirana.

1. Inadequate Death Bowling

First of all, CSK put up a competitive score of 190 runs but could not defend it in the death overs! Punjab chased it down with 2 balls to spare following a brutal finish from Shashank Singh after steady contributions throughout the innings, despite Matheesha Pathirana and Khaleel Ahmed being expensive and conceding a combined 73 runs in 7.4 overs, which hurt CSK's chances in the death.

2. Lack of bowling support for Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja bowled economically and got a wicket for 32 runs in 3 overs, but the remaining CSK bowlers did not have the penetration or control required. Yes, Jadeja did his job, but when the other bowlers cannot assert control, apply pressure, or take crucial wickets to break up partnerships, then the required run rate can remain manageable.

3. Over-reliance on Sam Curran

Sam Curran played an incredible innings of 88 runs off 47 balls; however, he got little to no support from the remaining batsmen. Dewald Brevis and Jadeja produced only insignificant contributions, and there were no strong partnerships down through the middle order, which left CSK just short of a formidable total of 200 runs that they might have been able to defend given the conditions.

In Match 49 of IPL 2025, Punjab Kings (PBKS) managed to beat riding-high Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 4 wickets in a gripping contest, chasing down a target of 191 in 19.4 overs, finishing at 194/6. CSK made a daring 190/6 in 19.2 overs, which was a challenging run chase that left gleeful, luckless fans on a rollercoaster ride!

Chennai Super Kings Innings

CSK started positively while batting first in their innings despite losing Yuzvendra Chahal (4 off 32 balls), Arshdeep Singh (2 off 25 balls), and Marco Jansen (2 off 30 balls) early, but watch as Sam Curran changes the tide of the match with a sensational 88 off 47 balls Anchored the innings with a blend of aggression and calmness, Dewald Brevis scoring 32 off 26 and Ravindra Jadeja 17 off 12 gave easy runs in late overs. PBKS's bowlers, with Khaleel Ahmed (3/4) and Matheesha Pathirana (4/5), took wickets at regular intervals to ensure that CSK wouldn't run away. CSK finished up at 190/6 in 19.2 overs, which was a decently competitive target and a chaseable score on a convincing batting track.

Punjab Kings Innings

PBKS began their chase positively with openers Shreyas Iyer and Prabhsimran Singh putting runs on the board early. Iyer led from the front with a match-defining 72 off 41 balls, his class showing with solid pathing off the right shots. Prabhsimran played a complimentary role, scoring a well-made 54 off 36 balls, which kept the required rate on par throughout the innings. Shashank Singh's late blitz of 23 off 12 balls gave the impetus needed to hurry up the chase. CSK’s bowlers fought back in that phase of the innings, led by Yuzvendra Chahal (4/32) and Arshdeep Singh (3/2), taking a total of 6 wickets. It is to say that it wasn’t enough to stop PBKS. Contributions from Khaleel Ahmed (2 off 28), Matheesha Pathirana (2 off 45), and Ravindra Jadeja (1 off 32) were minimal, and PBKS sealed the chase in 19.4 overs, finishing at 194/6.

CSK vs PBKS: Post Match Reactions

Prabhsimran Singh (PBKS): Talked about the opening partnership with Arya; they started at camps in pre-season and said all the timing and the trust were with Shreyas Iyer (72 off 41) in the chase. Said he was pleased to contribute with 54 off 36 for the win; gave a lot of credit to the coach, Ricky Ponting, for building a supportive environment where the captain and the coach lift players up (after poor performances). Said the team wanted to focus on making the playoffs, which is not something PBKS has accomplished for a while. clapping and cheering for as much as possible.

MS Dhoni (CSK Captain): Dhoni said 190/6 was 15 runs short, despite the Curran's 88 off 47 and Brevis's 32 off 26, and said Brevis was full of energy. Dhoni said the catching needs to be better and that they lost 4 wickets in the 19th over, leaving 7 balls left on the best home wicket of IPL 2025, and was frustrated to get that wrong.

Shreyas Iyer (PBKS captain and Player of the match): Iyer said that he always enjoys chasing big totals, plays with instinct, and backs himself. He stated that due to net practices with fast bowlers, he was very confident. Although it was humid and it was a tough fielding condition, Iyer was tactical as captain in leading the required over-rate. He said coach Ricky Ponting pushed the players to be aggressive early against good bowlers. Iyer, together with Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya, played the innings smart and aggressively, which got PBKS over the line and kept Punjab winning.

Punjab Kings spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has been making the rounds on social media during match 49 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) after snapping a hat-trick against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He outwitted MS Dhoni, Deepak Hooda, Anshul Kamboj, and Noor Ahmad in a four-wicket over at the fag end of the first season.

Lauding Chahal’s scintillating bowling performance at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, his rumoured girlfriend, RJ Majvesh, took to Instagram to share her thoughts. She wondered whether it was Chahal switched into a ‘God mode’ and praised his warrior-like mentality and strength.

“God mode on kya? Yuzvendra Chahal, strength of a warrior sir,” Mahvesh’s instagram post read.

Chahal’s new high!

Following a lacklustre start to the competition where Chahal bagged a couple of wickets in the first five matches, he went on to bag eleven wickets in his next four innings. This is also Chahal’s second four-for in IPL 2025, with the previous one coming against the Kolkata Knight Riders, where PBKS defended 111 runs in a historic triumph.

The wrist spinner was kept at bay, knowing CSK captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s woes against this particular variation. Despite getting hit for a six in the 19th over, Chahal bounced back strongly by outwitting the vintage Indian batter. He sprayed the ball near the stumps, and Dhoni tried to whack this down the ground. However, the ball came off the cue end as he holed it to Nehal Wadhera at long off.

Chahal went on to extract three more wickets on consecutive deliveries to wrap up the over with his second IPL hat-trick.

Following Chahal’s settlement with ex-wife Dhananshree Verma, the Indian spinner has been spotted with RJ Mahvesh on several occasions. The latter’s appreciation via Instagram has further sparked the rumours of the duo’s dating.

Yuzvendra Chahal delivered a spell for the ages at Chepauk, completely turning the match in favour of Punjab Kings with a four-wicket over against Chennai Super Kings. After being smashed for a six in the early part of the 19th over, Chahal proved his champion's mindset by coming back to pick a hat-trick and follow that up with the massive wicket of MS Dhoni to complete a fantasy performance.

Chahal’s final figures read 4/32 in three overs, and his brilliance ensured that CSK collapsed from 160/4 in 16 overs to 190 all out in 19.1 overs. His hat-trick victims were Deepak Hooda, Anshul Kamboj, and Noor Ahmad, while Dhoni’s wicket completed the stunning over. It was the first-ever hat-trick against CSK in IPL history and only the second hat-trick recorded at Chepauk, after Lakshmipathy Balaji’s effort way back in 2008.

Chahal’s Hat-Trick Seals Historic Collapse for CSK at Chepauk

Already the highest wicket-taker in IPL history, Chahal became just the third bowler to claim two IPL hat-tricks, joining the likes of Yuvraj Singh and Amit Mishra, who leads with three. Interestingly, both of Chahal's hat-tricks have come for different franchises, with his first coming for the Rajasthan Royals against KKR in 2022. He also became the fourth player to register a hat-trick for Punjab Kings, following in the footsteps of Yuvraj Singh.

Again, CSK's middle order did not cash in on a solid platform. From 160/4, they collapsed spectacularly, losing six wickets for only 30 runs in the last overs.

IPL has had 23 hat-tricks from 19 bowlers between 2008 - 2025, demonstrating that bowlers are still being remembered in a batsman's league. Amit Mishra leads the list of hat-tricks with three, and next is Yuvraj Singh with two hat-tricks. Yuzvendra Chahal made IPL history on April 30, 2025, as he picked up his second IPL hat-trick whilst playing for Punjab Kings against Chennai Super Kings at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium; this was the 23rd hat-trick in IPL.

While the IPL is branded as a batsman's league, bowlers have enjoyed their moment of fame, hat-tricks being some of the best achievements and producing indelible memories. All hat-tricks involve solid skill, accuracy, and game-determining situations.

Yuzvendra Chahal has again underlined why he is considered one of cricket's most dangerous leg-spinners, with a brilliant performance in a thrilling IPL 2025 contest at Chepauk between the Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Chahal produced a stellar performance to become the most prolific wicket-taker in IPL history and only the third bowler to take two hat-tricks in the tournament's long history. Chahal's magical spell flipped the match from CSK's hands into PBKS's grasp in a stunning fashion, leaving fans and players alike bewildered.

The moment that defined it came in the 19th over of CSK's innings. CSK had cruised to 184/5 with visions of a 200+ total, and all Thagan Ahluwalia made for PBKS was the type of stuff that could change the game like Chahal produced in his disastrous over. Chahal started his extinction of CSK's innings by taking the wicket of Deepak Hooda as he completed an impressive hat trick by taking the wickets of Anshul Kamboj, Noor Ahmad, and the great MS Dhoni, who fell victim to a perfectly disguised googly. CSK collapsed from 184/5 to 190 all out in a matter of balls, unable to recover from the shock.

Chahal Enters Exclusive Group with Second IPL Hat-Trick

With this accomplishment, Chahal joins Amit Mishra and Yuvraj Singh as the only players in IPL history to have two hat-tricks during their career. Chahal's previous IPL hat-trick was in 2022 for Rajasthan Royals against Kolkata Knight Riders. With this feat, Chahal not only adds to his own' personal achievements but also cements his place as an IPL great. It was another reminder of Chahal's ability to win match-ups through his myriad of variations, fine mental space, and class in the clutch moments in the game.

Top 3 Dream11 Captain choices

Yuzvendra Chahal: The PBKS leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has taken nine wickets in nine matches in the IPL 2025, including a heroic four-wicket haul against Kolkata Knight Riders to successfully defend 111 runs. Chennai produces a spin-friendly wicket, and Chahal can play a huge role in this game.

Top 3 Dream11 Vice-captain choices

Shreyas Iyer: Punjab Kings' captain Shreyas Iyer's golden form with the bat has just gone off with the scores of 0, 7, 6, and 25 not out in the last four innings. However, on the slow Chennai pitch, Iyer's batting will be very important for his team.

Noor Ahmad: CSK' Afghan spinner Noor Ahmad is the leading wicket-taker as a spinner in the IPL 2025 with 14 wickets in nine matches. His economy rate is also very impressive, 8.03.

Ravindra Jadeja: CSK all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja needs to play more key roles for his team, which he is capable of. In the last three games, he played crucial roles as an all-rounder, including a half-century. Although he took only six wickets in nine matches this season, his bowling economy rate is 8.23.

Yuzvendra Chahal was heavily trolled by Punjab Kings teammate Glenn Maxwell after he managed to get a bat from MS Dhoni before their match against the Chennai Super Kings on April 30. Chahal received his ODI cap from Dhoni in 2016 and has developed a close relationship with the CSK legend ever since.

Before the battle on Wednesday, Chahal managed to get hold of one of Dhoni's cherished bats and went back to the Punjab dressing room to flaunt. Maxwell was in the room and inquired if it belonged to the CSK icon.Chahal responded with some shadow batting and that he will bat with the willow that Dhoni had given to him. On this Maxwell gave a witty one-liner that reminded the leg-spinner that it is he who gets subbed out in every game.

"You get subbed out in every game," said Maxwell. Priyansh Arya, who was present in the room as well, made a light-hearted comment that some Haryana kid would definitely snatch it away from Chahal. Some kid from Haryana is going to steal this bat for sure joked Priyansh.

When Dhoni instructed Chahal not to call him as sir

In an interview in 2018, Chahal remembered how Ms Dhoni instructed him not to address him as sir. The leg-spinner explained how Dhoni called him over respectfully and instructed him not to call him sir."I got the ODI cap from the legend MS Dhoni. He is a legend and I was with him for the first time. I was not even able to speak in front of him. He speaks so politely that you doubt if he is actually Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the legend".When I met him for the first time at Zimbabwe I had used to refer to him as Mahi Sir. Then some time later, he called me and said, 'Mahi, Dhoni, Mahendra Singh Dhoni or Bhai. Call me whatever you may but not sir, Chahal added.

Yuzvendra Chahal is orchestrating a remarkable comeback in IPL 2025 after a shaky start to the season. The seasoned Indian leg-spinner has rediscovered his rhythm, claiming four wickets against Kolkata Knight Riders and following up with two crucial scalps against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). His resurgence has not only impressed fans but also played a pivotal role in Punjab Kings’ recent victories, highlighting his value and experience in high-pressure situations.

Backing Chahal throughout this journey is Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer. After the match against RCB, Iyer revealed a motivating chat with Chahal. He told the spinner to embrace his role as a match-winner and not play it safe. Iyer assured Chahal that he had the ability to bounce back and added that he remained one of the best bowlers in the IPL.

Shreyas Iyer, who led Kolkata Knight Riders to the title last season, is now making his mark with Punjab Kings. His strategic leadership, especially his ability to read opposing batters and deploy his bowlers accordingly, is earning praise from experts. Under Iyer’s captaincy, PBKS has shown renewed energy and tactical sharpness, with Chahal's resurgence standing as a prime example of his leadership’s positive influence.

Iyer is enjoying his moment Punjab Kings

The star Indian batter emphasized his commitment to staying grounded and focused on his duties. He revealed that his decision-making relied heavily on instinct, without much premeditation, and that he aimed to prevent new batters from settling at the crease. Despite Punjab Kings showing potential this season, their inconsistency has raised concerns.

However, skipper Shreyas Iyer remains composed, noting that "variety is the spice of life" and acknowledging the team's exposure to different match situations throughout the IPL. Following a convincing win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Punjab Kings climbed to second place in the points table. The team now looks forward to continuing their momentum as they prepare to host RCB once again, this time at the Mullanpur Stadium on April 20.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) pulled off one of the most remarkable turnarounds in IPL history by defending a modest total of 111 runs against the reigning champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), at Mullanpur. Despite being bowled out in just 15.3 overs, the home side refused to back down. Their batting lineup crumbled early, with big names like Glenn Maxwell, Shreyas Iyer, and debutant Josh Inglis failing to deliver. KKR looked firmly in control, especially after a steadying partnership between Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi.

The tide turned when Yuzvendra Chahal entered the attack with KKR well placed at 62/2 and a 98%-win probability. The veteran spinner dismantled the middle order with a fiery spell, claiming four wickets in just three overs. Chahal first dismissed Rahane, who surprisingly chose not to review his decision, and then took out Raghuvanshi, Rinku Singh, and Ramandeep Singh, sparking a collapse of six wickets in just over five overs. His brilliance not only rattled the KKR camp but also reignited PBKS's fighting spirit in front of their home crowd.

While Andre Russell attempted a counterattack by smashing 16 runs off one of Chahal's overs, Marco Jansen put the final nail in the coffin by dismissing the West Indian powerhouse. The incredible effort led PBKS to the lowest successful defence in IPL history. Overcome with joy, co-owner Preity Zinta rushed onto the field and shared an emotional hug with Chahal. She later presented him with the Player of the Match award, as the team celebrated a victory that will be etched in IPL folklore for years to come.

We wanted to be positive: Yuzvendra Chahal

Yuzvendra Chahal credited the Punjab Kings' dramatic win to a collective team effort and a positive mindset despite defending a low total. He said their plan was to take early wickets in the powerplay, especially after noticing the pitch offering turn. Chahal mentioned he stayed confident even after a costly previous outing and focused on varying his pace to trouble batters. He emphasized the importance of attacking with fewer runs on the board and believed in his ability to take wickets. Winning such a game, he said, boosts team morale, and he was proud to earn his first Player of the Match award for PBKS.

"It is a team effort. We wanted to be positive and we felt if we get 2-3 wickets in the powerplay then it will be good. We saw their spinners turn it and it helped us. When I bowled the first ball, it turned, Shreyas asked me if I wanted a slip, we wanted to be attacking as we had less runs and the only way we could win was by taking wickets. In the last game I conceded 56 for 4 overs, but I had full confidence and backed myself and my abilities. I always have the mindset of how to get the batters out, I varied my pace and if they have to hit, they will have to make an effort. When you win such a game, the team's morale will be high. It's my first man of the match for Punjab, I'm confident if I keep backing my skills and believe in myself, then I will get success," Chahal said at the post-match interview.
