Carlos Brathwaite hits beyond the park

In a dramatic turn of events during the Qualifier 1 match of the Max60 Caribbean 2024, West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite has found himself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. The video of Brathwaite's explosive reaction after a contentious dismissal is going viral, casting a shadow over his otherwise competitive performance.

Controversial dismissal sparks helmet incident

During the match between Brathwaite's team, the New York Strikers, and the Grand Cayman Jaguars, a moment of controversy arose when Brathwaite was dismissed under disputed circumstances. A delivery from Joshua Little appeared to hit Brathwaite’s shoulder before being caught behind, although there was no visible contact with the bat. Despite this, the umpire upheld the decision, leading to Brathwaite's vehement reaction.

Fuming over the decision, Brathwaite took out his frustration by smashing his helmet with his bat, sending it out of the park. The outburst didn’t end there; Brathwaite also threw his bat as he approached the dugout, further illustrating his displeasure with the decision.

New York strikers secure final spot with win

Despite Brathwaite's on-field frustration, his team, the New York Strikers, emerged victorious in the match. They defeated the Grand Cayman Jaguars by eight runs to secure their place in the final of the Max60 Cayman Islands.

The Strikers set a competitive total of 108 for eight, with notable contributions from Mitchell Owen, who scored 22 off 10 balls, and Brandon McMullen, who added 18 off 8. Captain Thisara Perera also played a crucial role, scoring 16 runs off seven balls, including two sixes.

In response, the Grand Cayman Jaguars fell short, reaching 96 for five in their 10 overs. Alex Hales top-scored with an unbeaten 35 off 24 balls, and skipper Sikandar Raza contributed 27 off 16 balls, but it wasn't enough to secure victory. The Strikers’ bowlers, particularly Ansh Patel with 2 for 8, played a pivotal role in restricting the Jaguars’ chase.
