Two Afghanistan star players in white-ball cricket, Rashid Khan and Azmatullah Omarzai, have been the big winners on their latest update in the ICC Men’s ODI player rankings. Rashid regains his place as the number one-ranked ODI bowler in the world post their 3-0 series victory against Bangladesh, while the all-rounder returned to the top spot in the ODI all-rounders.

Rashid took 11 wickets across the three games to move up five places and overtakes the left-arm spinner of the South Africa side, Keshav Maharaj, at the top of the rankings for the ODI bowlers, while Omarzai has climbed up the veteran of the Zimbabwean side, Sikandar Raza, on the list of ODI all-rounders, thanks to his seven wickets across the series.

The Player of the Series award winner, Ibrahim Zadran, has started to compete for the number one spot in the list of ODI batters. He has risen eight spots to improve to second only behind India’s newly appointed captain, Shubman Gill. It’s a confidence booster for the side as they start their preparations for the next World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Rashid Khan and Azmatullah Omarzai become number one bowler and all-rounder in latest ICC rankings

There is some movement in the updated Test rankings after India’s 2-0 series victory at home against the West Indies. Young opening batter, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and veteran spinner, Kuldeep Yadav, are among the biggest winners.

Jaiswal improves two places to rise to the fifth position behind the top spot ranker, England’s Joe Root, while Kuldeep climbs seven spots to move to 14th among Test bowlers. Shai Hope and John Campbell, both centurions for the Caribbean side, have broken through the rankings to 66 and 68.

Afghanistan (AFG) will square off against Bangladesh (BAN) in the third and final ODI of the series on Tuesday, October 14, at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. With a commanding 2–0 lead, Afghanistan have already clinched the series and will now aim for a clean sweep to maintain their winning momentum. Under the leadership of Rashid Khan, the Afghan side has displayed dominance across departments, showcasing their consistency and balance. With the series already sealed, the team management might experiment with a few changes, giving opportunities to bench players ahead of future assignments.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, will look to salvage pride after a disappointing performance in the ODI leg of the tour. Having earlier whitewashed Afghanistan 3–0 in the T20I series, the visitors have struggled to adapt to the longer format, failing to convert strong starts into match-winning performances. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto will hope his side can bounce back and end the tour on a high with a consolation win. A victory here would not only restore confidence but also help Bangladesh refine their combinations ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup preparations.

Rashid Khan took a beautiful running catch near the boundary rope during the Afghanistan vs Bangladesh (AFG vs BAN) 1st ODI match. After the heartbreaking T20I bilateral series against Bangladesh, Afghanistan is now searching for a win in the ongoing 3-match ODI series.

The Afghanistan cricket team has recently suffered back-to-back setbacks—first during the Asia Cup 2025 and then a whitewash against Bangladesh. The ongoing ODI series has become a prestige fight for the team. The Afghanistan vs. Bangladesh ODI series has startedtoday (October 8, 2025) at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in the United Arab Emirates.

AFG vs BAN 1st ODI, 1st Innings:

Bangladesh won the toss and decided to bat first. They sustained a tumbling start as they lost a couple of wickets early. After sustaining the early blows, at the moment when they were about to set on track with Saif Hassan and Tawhid Hridoy, Afghanistan struck again with the help of Rashid Khan. To clinch the wicket of well-set opener Saif Hassan, Khan took a wonderful catch.

Rashid Khan took a crucial catch:

When Bangladesh was batting for 53, Saif decided to take the aerial route against Afghanistan spinner Nangeyalia Kharote. The right-handed batter tried to hit the ball over extra cover. He got the elevation but not the distance, as the distance between the ball and the batter was too much.

The ball went high into the air; Rashid, with his eyes fixed on the ball, covered a good amount of ground to take a clean catch. He was near the boundary line but well aware of his momentum. Saif departed for 26 off 37, and Bangladesh scored 221 runs against all 10 of their wickets.

After struggling in the Asia Cup, there is no place for any of Fazalhaq Farooqi, Gulbadin Naib and Noor Ahmad but the batting looks particularly strong and secure with Hashmatullah Shahidi, who captains the side in ODIs, a very consistent player in this format. Afghanistan won four out of their last five ODI matches.

On the other hand, before Bangladesh arrived in the UAE for this tour, even their highest expectations would not have been to win all three of their T20Is, but following a 3-0 whitewash, they will now be looking to make it two series wins out of two. Their recent form in the ODI format is not good, having won just one out of the last five matches.

After a heartbreaking Asia Cup 2025 campaign, Afghanistan was whitewashed by Bangladesh in the three-match T20I series. After the last match of the series, Afghanistan cricket team coach Jonathan Trott acknowledged that they are not the second-best team in Asia.

Last night, at the Sharjah Cricket Ground, Bangladesh defeated Afghanistan by 6 wickets and 12 balls to spare. They chased down the 144-run target with ease. Before the match, Bangladesh was already leading the 3-match series by 2-0, which made the third and the last match for the home team a prestige fight. There too, the Afghanistan cricket team was unable to find the way to bounce back.

For the last few years, the Afghanistan cricket team has been considered the dark horse in various ICC events, especially in T20I tournaments. On social media, a part of cricket fans also claimed the Rashid Khan-led team as the second-best team of the continent. But back-to-back setbacks gave them a reality check.

Statements of Afghanistan coach after the defeat against Bangladesh

Accepting the reality, Trott, without any hesitation, said that they are not the second-best cricket team in Asia. He is well aware of the speculations and claims on social media platforms labelling him as one of the best in the cricket world. But the former England cricketer and now Afghanistan cricket team coach opined that at present, they are not the second best in Asia.

"As it stands right now, we obviously are not the second-best team in Asia. So, I think all sorts of social media and media speculations are not accurate. All we've got to do is get better," Jonathan Trott said after the 0-3 whitewash against Bangladesh in the 3-match T20I series.

<![CDATA[Farooqi, Naib, Janat dropped as Afghanistan name squads for Bangladesh series]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/farooqi-naib-janat-dropped-as-afghanistan-name-squads-for-bangladesh-series/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/farooqi-naib-janat-dropped-as-afghanistan-name-squads-for-bangladesh-series/ Sun, 21 Sep 2025 01:06:00 GMT

The Afghanistan national team has named their ODI and T20I squads for the white-ball tour against Bangladesh in the UAE, and a few players that have been included are new faces and there have been players that were omitted from the squad.

Among the players unreleased from the squad are left-arm seamer Fazalhaq Farooqi, and the allrounders Gulbadin Naib and Karim Janat. Farooqi has been replaced by Fyaz Ahmad, a tall left-arm seamer at 20 years of age and yet to play at the international level, regardless of having played 14 T20 matches with 12 wickets at a respectable economy rate of 9.06.

Another name added to the squad is the young top-order batter, nephew to the Afghanistan captain, Wafiullah Tarakhil, only available for the T20I squad. He had a strong run in the recent Shpageeza Cricket League, ending as the third highest run-scorer with 298 runs at an average of 37.25 and a strike rate of 155.20 over the course of nine innings.

Abdullah Ahmadzai has been added back into the T20I squad after being included as just a reserve in the Asia Cup and mystery spinner, AM Ghazanfar has been included in the ODI squad, with Rahmat Shah also among those listed as reserves for the T20I series, rather than the ODI series.

Rashid Khan's team relies on its spin depth and new players ahead of the Bangladesh white-ball series in Sharjah and Abu Dhabi

In regard to the squad refresh, ACB CEO Naseeb Khan said "this refresh is part of Afghanistan preparations towards the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup," and that the team has "a busy season ahead with many T20Is planned." He acknowledged the disappointment of being ousted from the Asia Cup, but is optimistic that AfghanAtalan will "bounce back strong."

Afghanistan's spin depth is a big asset. Even without Ghazanfar in the main T20I group, they have Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Mohammad Nabi available. They will have captain Hashmatullah Shahidi back to join Rashid, Nabi, Ghazanfar and Nangeyalia Kharote for the ODIs and in the conditions of Abu Dhabi, it could be effective to have Ghazanfar and Kharote available.

The tour begins with three T20Is in Sharjah on October 2, 3 and 5, then will follow with three ODIs in Abu Dhabi from October 8 to 14. This will complete the second part of a rescheduled all-format engagement between these two teams having Afghanistan won the ODI leg of the engagement in November 2024 by a score of 2-1.

Afghanistan suffered a narrow defeat against Bangladesh by eight runs in their last T20 International during the Asia Cup held in Abu Dhabi, and they will be keen to reverse that outcome this time.

Afghanistan T20I squad: Rashid Khan (capt), Ibrahim Zadran (vice-capt), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Mohamamad Ishaq (wk), Sediqullah Atal, Wafiullah Tarakhil, Darwish Rasooli, Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Sharafuddin Ashraf, Noor Ahmad, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Bashir Ahmad, Fareed Ahmad Malik, Abdullah Ahmadzai.

Reserves: AM Ghazanfar, Rahmat Shah.

Afghanistan ODI squad: Hashmatullah Shahidi (capt), Rahmat Shah (vice-capt), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Ikram Alikhil (wk), Ibrahim Zadran, Sediqullah Atal, Darwish Rasooli, Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Nangeyalia Kharote, AM Ghazanfar, Abdullah Ahmadzai, Bashir Ahmad, Mohammad Saleem Safi.

After the dismissal of Azmatullah Omarzai in the 16th over of the second innings during the clash between Afghanistan and Bangladesh at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, the former’s captain, Rashid Khan, walked into the middle with the bat. That was a situation when Afghanistan still needed so many runs with the fall of several wickets, as Bangladesh was putting pressure on the opponents.

Rashid played one of the sensational shots on the first ball of the 17th over of the second innings against Mustafizur Rahman. The Afghanistan captain put his head down and played a no-look six with the flick of the wrist. The bowler couldn’t believe it, as was the reaction from the captain and wicket-keeper of the Tigers, Litton Das, along with the rest of the team.

On the fourth ball of the chase, Rashid cut the slower delivery from the left-arm pacer through the point region for a boundary. He picked up the slower delivery quite well and had a huge smile on his face. But he couldn’t continue the same knock and got out for 20 runs in 11 balls with the help of two fours and one six.

Watch: Rashid Khan played no-look six against Bangladesh in Asia Cup 2025

Rashid was required to play a huge role in the game, where a victory would have taken his side to the Super 4 stage of the competition. The leg spinner drew first blood in the seventh over, when Saif Hasan was deceived completely with a googly as the ball crashed into the off-stump to break the stand. The batter got out for 30 runs in 28 balls.

On the third ball of the 16th over, it was a waste of a review from Rashid Khan, who stuck Shamim Hossain on the back foot. The batter’s flick shot couldn’t keep the ball away as he was trapped leg before the stumps. The veteran spinner ended with figures of 2/26 in four overs.

Despite that, Afghanistan fell short of the victory by eight runs and will now need to win the last group-stage clash against Sri Lanka to stay alive in this competition.

Afghanistan’s lower-order batter, Azmatullah Omarzai, has been in excellent form during the ongoing 2025 season of the Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In their opening clash against Hong Kong at the Sheik Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, the right-handed batter clubbed 53 runs in 21 balls to shoulder them to 188, which turned out to be a winning score.

Omarzai, Afghanistan's batter, was again required to show the same aggression during their struggling chase in the second encounter against Bangladesh at the same venue. Walking out to bat in the 11th over of the second innings, the right-hander took his time in the first few deliveries before starting the 14th over of the innings with a massive couple of shots.

He nailed Saif Hasan for a four on the very first ball of the innings. Going back in the crease, he cut the length ball hard to beat the diving cover-point region for a boundary before lofting the second delivery over long-off region for a huge six. Two balls later, he went low and slog swept the bowler over deep square-leg for the same result.

Watch: Azmatullah Omarzai nails massive sixes against Bangladesh in Asia Cup 2025

After a quiet 15th over of the innings, Azmatullah made room against Taskin Ahme and used his power against the short delivery on the stumps to make a sweet connection and get six runs off the blade. However, he looked to repeat the same shot on the very next ball and got dismissed for 30 runs in 16 balls with the help of one boundary and three sixes.

Bowling the penultimate over of the innings, Omarzai got the wicket of Towhid Hridoy for 26 runs in 20 balls. The balls smashed the wide ball hard towards the deep extra cover, but didn’t have the full elevation to get out.

Omarzai, who has been a vital member in the T20Is, featured in the IPL 2025 for the Punjab Kings as Afghanistan went on to taste defeat in the contest by eight runs. They will now face Sri Lanka in a do-or-die clash on September 18 at the same venue.

September 9, 2019, was a landmark day for Afghanistan cricket. It was the day when they emerged victorious in a Test match against Bangladesh in Chattogram. The heroics of Rashid Khan made the match result possible for the Afghanistan cricket team. The spinner took 11 wickets (5 wickets in the first innings, 6 wickets in the second innings) in the game and contributed with the bat as well.

During the first phase of the match, Khan registered a half century. Rahmat Shah, Asghar Afghan, Ibrahim Zadran, and Afsar Zazai also played key roles to make the match and the day memorable. From the beginning to the closing moments of the game, the home team was outclassed by the visiting side in every department.

Lackluster batting by Bangladesh allowed Afghanistan to maintain a healthy lead after the first innings. Batting first, a century from Shah, a 92-run knock from Afghan, and Khan's half-century helped Afghanistan to score 342 runs in their first innings. In reply, Bangladesh got only 205 runs. Mohammad Nabi took 3 wickets to go with Rashid Khan's 5-wicket spell.

Afghanistan dominated throughout the match

When Afghanistan scored 260 runs in the second innings, things got worse for Bangladesh. Their bowlers performed well, but it was the batting part that let them down. To win the match, they have to score 398 runs. By then, Rashid Khan and his boys started to smell the essence of a much-awaited victory. Khan in the second innings got 6 wickets, and Zahir Khan took 3 to restrict Bangladesh to only 173 runs. Thus, Afghanistan was able to win the Test match by 224 runs, a win that was remembered for a long time.

"It was a total team effort. The credit goes to the players and the supporting staff," Rashid said after the match.
