Shubman Gill and his team are getting ready for one last challenge as they take on England in the IND vs ENG 5th Test at Kennington Oval, London. The match will start at 3:30 PM on Thursday. This is a must-win game for India to level the series 2-2 and avoid losing another overseas tour.

Meanwhile, during the tour, former batter Ambati Rayudu took part in a challenge on ESPNcricinfo where he blind-ranked former Indian captains. Surprisingly, he did not include big names like Kapil Dev and Virat Kohli in his top three.

Rayudu Picks Dhoni as No. 1

Rayudu first ranked Sourav Ganguly, placing him at number three. Ganguly is known for changing the way Team India played cricket. After that, Rayudu placed Kapil Dev, the 1983 World Cup-winning captain, in fourth place.

Former T20I and Test captain Rohit Sharma was ranked second and made it to Rayudu's top three. He then placed Virat Kohli, India’s most successful Test captain, in fifth position. Rayudu added that Kohli’s ranking depends on the format and said that if it was only for Tests, Kohli would be in the top two. Mohammad Azharuddin was ranked sixth.

The last name that appeared was MS Dhoni, whom Rayudu ranked at number one. He said he had kept the top spot empty, hoping Dhoni’s name would come. Dhoni is the only Indian captain to win three ICC trophies – the T20 World Cup, the ODI World Cup, and the Champions Trophy.

India Look to End Series on a High in 5th Test at The Oval

After starting the series with a loss, India made a strong comeback with a historic win at Edgbaston. However, they lost the next match at Lord’s. Now, India will hope to take the positive energy from the drawn Manchester Test into the final match at The Oval.

England have already announced their playing XI for the IND vs ENG 5th Test, making four changes. Ben Stokes, Liam Dawson, Jofra Archer, and Brydon Carse have been left out. On the other hand, India made four changes to their playing XI. Dhruv Jurel, Akash Deep, Karun Nair, and Prasidh Krishna came in place of Rishabh Pant, Anshul Kamboj, Shardul Thakur, and Jasprit Bumrah.

<![CDATA[ 'Test cricket needs Virat' - Legendary West Indian batter asks Virat Kohli to reconsider his retirement decision]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/test-cricket-needs-virat-legendary-west-indian-batter-asks-virat-kohli-to-reconsider-his-retirement-decision/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/test-cricket-needs-virat-legendary-west-indian-batter-asks-virat-kohli-to-reconsider-his-retirement-decision/ Sat, 10 May 2025 22:20:38 GMT

Former West Indies captain Brian Lara has subsequently made an emotional appeal to Virat Kohli, asking him to reconsider his reported decision to stop playing Test cricket. Lara, who is considered one of the greatest batsmen of all time, explained that Kohli's role could be significant for the future of the longest format. Kohli, who is ranked number four for runs scored as an active Test player, has been considering retirement after India's recent disappointments.

Lara, the record holder of the highest individual Test score (400*), came out in support of Kohli in an Instagram post on Saturday, May 10.
He posted an image of his chat with the Indian sensation during the current season of IPL, writing alongside it a powerful message: "Test cricket needs Virat!! He is going to be persuaded." He IS NOT retiring from Test cricket." Lara also confidently forecast that Kohli would average more than 60 in the remaining part of his Test career.

This development comes just days after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the format on May 7. Kohli’s Test performances since 2020 have not been on par with his earlier standards. In his last 69 innings, he has scored 2028 runs at an average of 30.72, managing just three centuries. This contrasts sharply with his earlier record of 7202 runs at an average of 54.97, which included 27 centuries.

Calls for Kohli to Continue in Test Cricket Intensify

Kohli's recent dip in form was highlighted during a recent trip to Australia for the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he scored 190 runs in 9 innings, including a century in the first match. India lost the series 3-1, surrendering the prestigious trophy to Australia after a decade of dominance. Kohli also struggled in the home series against Bangladesh and New Zealand, contributing modest scores.

Piling on the pressure along with Lara's request for Kohli to continue playing, retired CSK and India batsman Ambati Rayudu issued an emotional appeal on X (Twitter).
"Virat Kohli, please don't retire. The Indian team needs you more than ever. You have so much more in the tank. Test cricket will not be the same without you."

India's next Test series gets underway June 20 in England, which launches the 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle.

<![CDATA[Ambati Rayudu’s emotional plea to Virat Kohli shocks fans!]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/ambati-rayudu-s-emotional-plea-to-virat-kohli-shocks-fans/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/ambati-rayudu-s-emotional-plea-to-virat-kohli-shocks-fans/ Sat, 10 May 2025 19:15:37 GMT

In an emotional and moving appeal, former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu turned to social media to exhort Virat Kohli not to retire from Test cricket. In the midst of swirling rumors regarding Kohli's future in red-ball cricket, Rayudu's tweet hit a deep nerve with the fans all over the country. "The Indian team needs you more than ever," Rayudu tweeted, adding, "Test cricket will never be the same without you walking out to battle it out for Team India."

Kohli, who has already relinquished Test captaincy and has been choosy with red-ball games due to workload management and fitness, has said nothing regarding his Test future in recent weeks.
But rumors of a possible full retirement from the format have picked up pace, particularly with Rohit Sharma also resigning and India moving to a transition period in Tests. Rayudu's popularity with the public arrives amidst a period when Indian cricket needs tested leadership and stability in the conventional game.

The 36-year-old Rayudu, who had roomed with Kohli for a few years, admitted that international cricket can take an emotional and mental toll, but made it clear that Kohli "has so much more in the tank" and is "irreplaceable when it comes to grit, intensity, and inspiration on the field." His tweet, full of sincere concern and admiration, went viral at once and elicited a deluge of the same kind of requests from fans and former cricketers as well.

Once again, Kohli's Visibility Matters in Test Cricket

Rayudu's call brings up again this discussion of Kohli's legacy in the longest form of the game. With over 8,500 runs in Tests, 29 hundreds and countless beyond memorable performances, Virat Kohli has been one of the stalwarts of India's dominance in world cricket for the last decade. Stats aside, his zealousness and aggression in a leadership role has brought back a focus of fitness, attitude, and competitiveness back into India's Test culture.

As the men in blue get ready for new leadership and a new England series, Rayudu's comments really hit home what so many would feel: Kohli's presence in the Test side still matters, for his ability and his valued presence as a senior statesman of the game. Whether or not the legendary batter doubts his red-ball future or has already made it up in his own mind remains to be seen, but for now, fans are speaking in one voice: "Please don't retire, King Kohli."

Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu came under fire on social media after posting a message of peace amidst rising tensions between India and Pakistan. The backlash followed his tweet quoting Mahatma Gandhi, which many netizens felt was poorly timed given the national mood. The quote, “An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind,” accompanied by folded hands emojis, didn’t sit well with a section of the public.

Rayudu’s post came shortly after the IPL 2025 clash between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals was cancelled in Dharamshala due to security concerns. The timing of his message led to a wave of online trolling, with critics accusing the former cricketer of being insensitive to the broader geopolitical situation and the emotions of the nation.

While some praised Rayudu for advocating non-violence, the majority of social media responses were harsh. Many users felt that his peaceful stance, though well-intentioned, did not resonate at a time when nationalistic sentiments were running high. The post has since gone viral, sparking debate about the role of public figures in commenting during times of political unrest.

Isn't call for weakness: Ambait Rayudu

Ambati Rayudu responded to social media backlash by clarifying that his earlier message, quoting Mahatma Gandhi, was not a sign of weakness but a reflection of wisdom. The former India batter emphasized that advocating for peace during tense times should be seen as a thoughtful stance, not a lack of patriotism or strength.

On Thursday night, Pakistan carried out drone attacks aimed at Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan, but all were successfully intercepted by India’s defense systems.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain Rishabh Pant's performance in IPL 2025 has drawn criticism, and former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu has come out in the open to criticize Pant for his obstinacy in his batting style and position. Pant, who was acquired at a whopping ₹27 crore at the auction, has not lived up to expectations with both bat and as captain.

Pant has made only 128 runs in 10 innings this season, with a run of poor form that includes six single-digit scores and just one half-century. While LSG had a great start to the season, Pant's failure to score runs was not noticed at first, but as the team's campaign has begun to falter, his performance is being scrutinized intensely. Against Punjab Kings in a recent match, while pursuing a massive 237, Pant could muster 18 runs from 17 deliveries before mistiming a big hit and losing his wicket—citing him for criticism from Rayudu.

Talking on a sports program, Rayudu commented, "I think he's being quite obstinate about how he wants to do things. It's not going in his favor right now." He further added that Pant needs to admit that he is struggling and experiment with new ways rather than sticking to a failed recipe. Rayudu also expressed doubt over Pant's middle-order credentials and suggested that he would be more effective as an opener in T20 cricket, citing that he lacks the proper mindset to regulate the game from No. 4.

Rishabh Pant’s Scores in IPL 2025:

 • vs PBKS: 18 (17 balls)
 • vs MI: 4 (2 balls)
 • vs DC: 0 (2 balls)
 • vs RR: 3 (9 balls)
 • vs CSK: 63 (49 balls)
 • vs GT: 21 (18 balls)
 • vs KKR: 0 (0 balls)
 • vs MI: 2 (6 balls)
 • vs PBKS: 2 (5 balls)
 • vs SRH: 15 (15 balls)

With only 10 points from 11 matches and a poor net run rate of -0.469, LSG must win all their remaining games and hope for favorable results elsewhere. For that to happen, Pant’s form must improve rapidly.

<![CDATA[[WATCH] Shikhar Dhawan makes a sassy comment about his former captain during IPL 2025 live telecast]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/shikhar-dhawan-makes-a-sassy-comment-about-his-former-captain-during-ipl-2025-live-telecast/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/shikhar-dhawan-makes-a-sassy-comment-about-his-former-captain-during-ipl-2025-live-telecast/ Mon, 21 Apr 2025 18:19:59 GMT

Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan took a light-hearted dig at his ex-teammate and 2004 U19 World Cup captain Ambati Rayudu during his Hindi commentary stint in the Punjab Kings vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru IPL 2025 match. Dhawan jokingly held Rayudu responsible for India’s semifinal loss to archrivals Pakistan in the ICC U19 World Cup 2004.

Back in 2004, Rayudu was leading a promising Indian squad and was seen as the next big thing in Indian cricket. India cruised through the group stage and reached the semifinal, where they were set to face Pakistan. However, a major blow came when Rayudu was banned from the crucial match due to a slow over rate in the final group game against Sri Lanka—an offense confirmed by both on-field umpires.

Pakistan initially struggled during their chase in the semifinal, but managed to regroup and snatch a victory from India, securing their place in the final. They went on to defeat the West Indies to lift the U19 World Cup. Reflecting on the incident, Dhawan quipped that Rayudu’s absence in the semifinal had a significant impact on the team’s performance and may have cost them a spot in the final.

Watch the hilarious moment here:

Dhawan recalled his U/19 days

During his IPL 2025 commentary stint, Shikhar Dhawan recalled that Ambati Rayudu was a prominent name in U19 cricket and had captained India in the U19 World Cup. He mentioned that Rayudu was banned ahead of the semifinal match, which, according to Dhawan, significantly impacted the team’s performance and led to their loss in that crucial game.

"Ambati Rayudu ka bahut bada naam tha U19 mai. Humare captain the U19 World Cup mei aur waha pe bhi ban hogaye the, humara semi-final mar gaya (Ambati Rayudu was a big name in U19 cricket. He was our captain in the U19 World Cup, and he got banned there also ahead of the semi-final, and we lost," said Shikhar Dhawan during his IPL 2025 commentary work.

In place of regular skipper Ambati Rayudu, Dinesh Karthik was assigned to lead the team in the semifinal. Batting first, Team India scored 168 runs; Robin Uthappa was the top scorer with 33. Pakistan in the second innings had a tough time at the beginning, losing wickets at regular intervals, which resulted in 5 for 83. From here, the neighboring country team turned the tables with the help of Tariq Mahmood (45 not out) and Fawad Alam (43 not out). Together, the duo stitched a match-winning 88-run partnership.

<![CDATA[WATCH: Ambati Rayudu reacts as MS Dhoni return as captain of Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/watch-ambati-rayudu-reacts-as-ms-dhoni-return-as-captain-of-chennai-super-kings-in-ipl-2025/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/watch-ambati-rayudu-reacts-as-ms-dhoni-return-as-captain-of-chennai-super-kings-in-ipl-2025/ Thu, 10 Apr 2025 22:25:23 GMT

In a major development ahead of IPL 2025, MS Dhoni is set to return as captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The leadership change came after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of the tournament due to an elbow fracture. The announcement has sparked widespread excitement among CSK fans, who are eagerly looking forward to seeing Dhoni lead the team once again.

Former CSK batter Ambati Rayudu, who is now a commentator, expressed his excitement over MS Dhoni’s return as captain. Rayudu, who represented CSK from 2018 to 2023 and won three titles under Dhoni’s leadership, mentioned that fans would be delighted to see Dhoni back at the helm. The former India middle-order batter also added that Dhoni always had the magic to inspire a CSK comeback and believed it would be a great story if he managed to guide the team into the playoffs.

"Dhoni always has the magic to make CSK comeback. It will be a good story if he can lead the team into the playoffs," the former CSK batter told in the viral video.

Ruturaj sustained the injury in a game against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Guwahati. Although he played on while in pain for the subsequent matches, an MRI later confirmed an elbow fracture. CSK head coach Stephen Fleming clarified that the initial X-ray was not certain, but the MRI showed the extent of the injury. Fleming praised Gaikwad’s effort to continue playing despite the pain but confirmed that the team had no choice but to sideline him for the rest of the season. “We’re disappointed and feel for him. He tried hard, but now we’ve appointed MS Dhoni as captain for the rest of the tournament,” Fleming said.

CSK hasn't yet started well with IPL 2025, standing with a mere single win against five games played and being currently ranked at 9th place on the points table. Yet, under the captaincy of Dhoni, the expectations remain for a resurgency. Fascinatingly enough, retained as an uncapped player in ₹4 crores, Dhoni emerges the very first uncapped captain IPL history has witnessed. CSK is next facing Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday, April 11

Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu came into the headlines recently not because of his gameplay but over a heartfelt tweet that soon turned into meme fodder. On April 10, 2025, Rayudu shared a tweet and wrote an emotional note about the unflinching support of MS Dhoni, lovingly referred to as "Thala." His tweet stated, "I was a Thala's fan. I am a Thala's fan." I will remain a Thala's fan," and then a request to people to give charity rather than waste money on paid PR.

Though Rayudu's intention was altruistic and his devotion to Dhoni commendable, the internet had other intentions. Soon enough after his tweet became viral, parody versions of his message began emerging. Most prominent among them was a parody tweet in the form of gibberish masquerading as a jumbled-text parody mock of the original message's formatting with comical gibberish. Another fan account reposted Rayudu's original tweet word for word, further adding fuel to the meme wave.

It's always natural whenever MS Dhoni comes to the field has lots of buzz and craze all around, same as in the combo where former Indian cricketers Navjot Singh Siddhu and Ambati Rayudu held with a funny banter. It was the match between CSK vs PBKS at Mullanpur. Where PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bat first. Within their 20 overs Punjab Kings (PBKS) scored 219 runs, with an excellent knock by Priyansh Aryan who scored 103 runs facing 42 balls.

It was a well-known fact that it wouldn't be an easy chase for CSK as they haven't chased a big target this season and they have lost their games by chasing targets above 180. Another thing to note in this match was that CSK had sloppy fielding which aggravated the score. CSK started their innings well this time where they attained the highest power-play score of this season.

But it couldn't last long as wickets followed right after the powerplay but Devon Conway played with a flow. His partnership with Shivam Dube gave a major hope that CSK could achieve this target, but Dube too left the course half-cooked. Then came Dhoni at no 5 he played a cameo of 27 runs of 12 balls which precised that CSK could win the game but after the wicket of Ms Dhoni the momentum fully shifted to the PBKS side where they won the match by 18 runs marking their fourth loss in the league.

MS Dhoni Coming With A Sword

It was the wicket of Shivam Dube and there came MS Dhoni no when Dhoni was getting down the stairs former CSK player Rayudu who was in the combo said Dhoni looked warmed up and ready, he looked like he was lifting the sword, not the bat. When Dhoni came to bat Siddhu said every target was achievable and Rayudu went over to him stating It seemed MS Dhoni was coming out with a sword in his hand, not a bat. The sword will be wielded tonight, and it will be Dhoni's sword that will be wielded.

But Navjot Singh Siddhu countered Rayudu's statement saying "Guru, you're saying like he is not coming to play cricket but to fight a war, "A few days before too Ambati Rayudu and Sanjay Bangar had a heated argument about playing Rohit Sharma as an impact player which was roasted widely in internet and now this banter between Siddhu and Rayudu has been the talk of the town.
