<![CDATA[MLC 2025: Glenn Maxwell is set to lead Washington Freedom]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/mlc-2025-glenn-maxwell-is-set-to-lead-washington-freedom/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/mlc-2025-glenn-maxwell-is-set-to-lead-washington-freedom/ Wed, 11 Jun 2025 17:04:45 GMT

Australia's explosive all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been made the captain of Washington Freedom for the 2025 season of Major League Cricket (MLC). Maxwell takes over from veteran Steve Smith, who captained the franchise to their first title in 2024. Smith's limited availability this year for national duties has necessitated the change in leadership, and Maxwell is now ready to lead the reigning champions.

Smith will be unavailable for most of the 2025 season as he becomes part of Australia's Test team on their Caribbean tour, where they will have a three-match series. While still in the Freedom setup, he will play just two games this season. On the other hand, Maxwell, who has just come from declaring himself retired from ODIs, has loads of leadership experience and recent success with the team behind him. "Captain Maxwell is here to rewrite the script. Glenn Maxwell will lead the Freedom squad in Cognizant Major League Cricket 2025. Steve Smith will captain the side in the two games he plays during the season. #FreedomExpress #MLC2025," announced the franchise on X.

Maxwell was an integral part of Washington's title-winning squad last season, making contributions with both the bat and ball. He made 153 runs in a span of eight innings at an average of 38.25, including a crucial half-century, and also added 10 wickets at an average of 17 and an economy rate of 6.66. His all-rounder skills and big-impact approach make him a natural candidate to captain the side in 2025.

Maxwell's Leadership Experience and Squad for 2025

Maxwell has experience in captaincy roles too. He earlier captained the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League for 65 matches and brought home 34 victories. He also captained Punjab Kings in the 2017 season of the Indian Premier League, falling just short of a playoff qualification with seven victories in 14 games. His energetic presence and strategic thinking will hopefully bring a spark to Freedom's title defense.

Washington Freedom has assembled a strong and balanced squad for the upcoming MLC season: Glenn Maxwell (C), Steve Smith, Mark Chapman, Mukhtar Ahmed, Jack Edwards, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Owen, Abhishek Paradkar, Obus Pienaar, Ian Holland, Justin Dill, Andries Gous, Lahiru Milantha, Saurabh Netravalkar, Amila Aponso, Yasir Mohammad, Lockie Ferguson, Jason Benrendorff, and Ben Sears. Freedom will be aiming to replicate their 2024 success and continue their dominance in Major League Cricket.

<![CDATA[Ravindra Jadeja reveals why T20 format captaincy tougher than Test captaincy]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/ravindra-jadeja-reveals-why-t20-format-captaincy-tougher-than-test-captaincy/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/ravindra-jadeja-reveals-why-t20-format-captaincy-tougher-than-test-captaincy/ Wed, 28 May 2025 22:00:36 GMT

Recently, Ravichandran Ashwin had an interview with Ravindra Jadeja in the first episode of his YouTube show Kutti Stories season 3. During that interview, Jadeja clarified why T20 cricket captaincy was tougher than Test cricket.

Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have played together many times for Team India in every format and the Chennai Super Kings. They have great memories as they played massive roles together many times for their teams’ successes on the field.

Ravindra Jadeja on Test cricket captaincy

Jadeja believes that the captaincy is easier in Test cricket. He mentioned that the Test cricket decisions are much simpler than T20 cricket while setting up the fielders, choosing the bowlers, especially using the key bowlers. Jadeja claims that these are more calculative in Test cricket. The all-rounder feels that most of the fielders are generally changed in Test cricket according to the bowlers, not according to the opposition batters.

Ravindra Jadeja on T20 cricket captaincy

On the other hand, Jadeja also believes that every ball is an event in T20 cricket, which makes the captaincy job tougher. While every four and six matters in T20 cricket, captains feel under pressure with a boundary, and need to think more about the next move.

Ashwin also added that the session breaks of each day of Test cricket, which generally come after two hours of play, make Test cricket easier strategically for the captain.

Meanwhile, Jadeja further claimed that the batting order mostly remains the same for Test cricket but needs to be adjusted for T20 cricket according to the situations, which we especially experience in the crucial late middle overs or slog overs.

<![CDATA[IND vs ENG: Team India Test squad out for England tour – big surprises in selection]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/ind-vs-eng-team-india-test-squad-out-for-england-tour-big-surprises-in-selection/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/ind-vs-eng-team-india-test-squad-out-for-england-tour-big-surprises-in-selection/ Sat, 24 May 2025 13:49:29 GMT

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has now made it official: Shubman Gill has taken charge as the new captain of the Indian Test cricket team ahead of a five-match series against England. This is a momentous change in leadership, as the series will also mark the end of Rohit Sharma's prolific Test career. It also marks the start of India’s campaign in the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship, with the first Test scheduled to take place on June 20, 2025.

At only 25 years of age, Gill has been placed in the hot seat for one of the most difficult assignments in international cricket — a Test series in England. Although Gill has experience captaining the under-19 Indian side against England and the Indian T20I side and Gujarat Titans IPL side, this will be Gill's first time as a captain in Test cricket. The appointed vice-captain will be Rishabh Pant, who is a fearless batsman and is not afraid of playing overseas.

Aside from selecting the captain and vice-captain of the Test squad, the squad announcement signals a clear intent to expand a squad that balances veteran players with emerging players. The inclusion of Karun Nair (who hasn't played Test since 2017) and Sai Sudharsan shows that emerging talent alongside veteran players (like Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja) shows that Indian cricket is preparing for a transitional period with an eye on long-term stability and performance.

A New Beginning Starts in the World Test Championship Cycle

India’s five-match Test series in England will be the first assignment for Gill as captain and will test his tactical mind in tough overseas conditions. The selection of the squad suggests that the selectors are willing to go with fresh faces while still keeping a core of match-winners. The bowling attack is new with Mohammed Shami out due to fitness concerns, and in his place are young pacers such as Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh.

The selected squad for the series is Shubman Gill (Captain), Rishabh Pant (Vice-Captain), KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Dhruv Jurel, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, and Kuldeep Yadav. With a combination of youth and experience, India is expected to have innings stability with ample firepower to conquer English conditions.

In the 65th match of the IPL 2025, Royal Challengers Bengaluru stunned everyone when Jitesh Sharma came to toss for his team against SunRisers Hyderabad in Lucknow on Friday evening (May 23). Here, we will know the reason for RCB regular captain Rajat Patidar's absence during the toss of the match.

While we have already got four teams for the IPL 2025 Playoffs, the battle for the first two places is still on strongly among the four teams. Royal Challengers Bengaluru are one of the favourite teams to finish in the top two places in the IPL 2025 points table.

IPL 2025, RCB vs SRH: Captain Rajat Patidar missed the toss

The Lucknow match against SRH is the 13th game for the second-placed RCB. However, RCB regular captain Rajat Patidar didn't join in the toss, while Jitesh Sharma was present at the toss, as he is leading the team in the match.

Rajat Patidar is suffering from a hand injury, which he got during their last match against Chennai Super Kings on May 3. While there is no official statement, RCB team management may have taken a tactical decision to keep their regular skipper fresh for the Playoffs, along with avoiding any further injury scare.

However, the RCB regular captain isn't fully out of the match against SRH. He has been added to the list of the Impact subs, so we can still see him in the game, if his service requires. He has an important role for his team to produce powerful performances in the IPL 2025, as the right-handed batter has scored 239 runs in 10 innings this season with an average of 23.90 and a strike rate of 140.58, including two half-centuries.

Is it Jitesh Sharma's first IPL captaincy?

Meanwhile, Jitesh Sharma became the ninth RCB captain. However, it isn't his first IPL match as a captain. In the IPL 2024, he led Punjab Kings in one match, and interestingly, it was also against SunRisers Hyderabad in Hyderabad.

<![CDATA[3 players who are the best choice for PBKS captaincy]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-analysis/3-players-who-are-the-best-choice-for-pbks-captaincy/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-analysis/3-players-who-are-the-best-choice-for-pbks-captaincy/ Mon, 19 May 2025 18:12:52 GMT

Shreyas Iyer, in unfortunate circumstances, injured the index finger of his hand while practising for the game against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Jaipur. During the match, Iyer did bat but not at his usual number. The right hand batter came further down, looked down and out, and didn't have the captain's armband too while his side took the field in the second innings. Instead, he was substituted, and Shashank Singh led the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in his absence. However, there has been no confirmation yet from any source, neither him nor the franchise, about his availability in the games ahead. With PBKS affirming their playoff spot last night, and yet having a couple of matches more to play in the league, they must be prepared for all the eventualities.

The North Indian franchise's regular skipper became the first player in the history of the tournament to make three teams qualify for the playoffs as captain. He first accomplished this feat as the leader of the Delhi Capitals (DC) in 2019 and 2020. Moreover, in 2020, he took them to the finals, only to get beaten by the Mumbai Indians (MI). Second, he led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the title glory last year, and now this season with PBKS, he, as their captain, has made them qualify for the playoffs after 11 years, and the first time since 2014. PBKS, then known as Kings XI Punjab, had lost in the final to KKR.

In a worst-case scenario, if PBKS are forced to explore captaincy options due to the possibility of Shreyas' unavailability, then there can be a few candidates for the prestigious role. A deeper look into that might help understand which players can lead the franchise. Add to it the magnitude of the upcoming games, and it would be a serious headache for the team management if it goes that route.

Shashank Singh

Shashank Singh

Having been made the stand-in skipper, in Iyer's absence, against RR, he seems to have the full trust of the head coach, Ricky Ponting, and his backroom staff. Although he was guided by Shreyas and the coach while defending their total, but if left alone, he will feel confident of leading the side in this extremely vital business stage of the tournament. When batting, lower down the order for the Kings, aiming to finish well, he plays maturely and responsibly, and this character might aid him if asked to don the captaincy hat.

Prabhsimran Singh

Prabhsimran Singh

Although he has never captained any team, in any format and on any level, now being the first-choice wicketkeeper of the team in Josh Inglis' absence, he can be thrown into the skipper duties. From behind the stumps, he has a bird's eye view of the game and sees the action unfold in front of him. This game sense can help him while making all the bowling changes and setting the field accordingly.

Arshdeep Singh

Arshdeep Singh

The leader of the bowling attack for the team, he is always seen giving his valuable inputs towards making things happen. He is progressive on the field and would relish if made the captain. Being already in the think tank, he will have an added advantage and would feel strategically confident enough to lead his side in case the regular skipper cannot.

PBKS would hope that Shreyas Iyer recovers in time for their upcoming games and is deemed fit enough to not only lead but also contribute massively with the bat, as he is known for and has done positively for the team. Taking a player of his calibre out of any side would create a huge hole in their chances to progress and put a stake forward for winning the silverware.

<![CDATA[3 players who can replace Shreyas Iyer in PBKS squad]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-analysis/3-players-who-can-replace-shreyas-iyer-in-pbks-squad/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-analysis/3-players-who-can-replace-shreyas-iyer-in-pbks-squad/ Mon, 19 May 2025 10:35:04 GMT

The skipper and talismanic batter of the Punjab Kings (PBKS), Shreyas Iyer found himself in a very precarious situation. Much to the scare of the team's fans, their leader suffered a nasty blow to the index finger of his hand during a practice session one day before the match. He was seen chatting to the head coach, Ricky Ponting, about it and looked in disbelief. He, however, didn't pull out, and as captains are, gritty and dogged, he went along with it. The ice pack and magic spray came to his rescue for the time being, and only he knew for how long.

Iyer usually bats one down in the order, but came further down. He could be seen struggling with donning his gloves, and eventually came in the middle at the fall of the third wicket of his team. He faced difficulties in timing the ball and was more often than not in a tentative state while batting in his brief and slow innings of 30 runs in 25 balls. His injured finger made him bat unlike his intrinsic self, and it was a worrying sign for everyone in the dugout and all of Punjab's faithful.

In the second innings, the explosive batter didn't take the field. He was instead substituted, and Shashank Singh, the finisher, was handed over the captaincy duties. The stand-in captain was helped by Ricky Ponting and Shreyas too from the dugout. Punjab, in the end, managed a victory by 10 runs, and a favourable result in the match, scheduled later in the day, confirmed their playoff spot.

Shreyas has been in impeccable form this season, both with the bat and while leading the team. His bowling and fielding changes have been immaculate, and that has fetched the team immense success this season. He is also their second-highest run scorer after Prabhsimran Singh, and his impactful knocks have dealt an irreplaceable punch to the opposition. In an unfortunate scenario, if his finger is unable to heal in time for the rest of the matches in the season, PBKS will have a tough time in his absence and might have to rope in strong replacements.

While Shreyas Iyer is by far an irreplaceable asset for the Punjab Kings, here's a look at a few players who can potentially fill in his shoes for the remainder of the season -

Sarfaraz Khan

Sarfaraz Khan

India's relatively newer test entrant was unlucky to miss out in the auction. He went unsold at a base price of Rs 50 lakhs, while his brother Musheer bagged a deal with PBKS. He has not had great IPL returns over the years, but his recent exploits with the Indian test team might bring about a change in his attitude and produce the explosive best out of him, if recruited by the Punjab franchise. It is also the time to reward him for his stringent fitness regime that he has been on, off-season.

Prabhsimran Singh's cousin went unsold in the auction at a base price of 30 lakhs. Just a few weeks after that, he smashed the quickest List A hundred by an Indian, in 35 balls, and guided Punjab to a comprehensive victory over Arunachal Pradesh in a Vijay Hazare match. Previously, he has been a part of the Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad, but without much impact and a low average.

KS Bharat

Once in and out of the Indian test team, but still featuring in the World Test Championship final 2023, and now completely off the cards, Bharat can be a decent backup. Bharat, however, has not had many good moments in his IPL career and went unsold this time. His experience is a guarantee, and he has previously represented the Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans, and Kolkata Knight Riders. If brought in, he can play an anchor as well as an explosive innings.
