The last Super 8 clash of the Group 2 between Sri Lanka and Pakistan from the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy holds more importance than it reflects for both sides for different reasons. Pakistan will need to collect the victory in that do-or-die clash, while the co-hosts Sri Lanka will hope to end on a high.

The clash at the stadium will be the competition between two sides, who have struggled massively in the Super 8 stage of the game. Sri Lanka’s captain, Dasun Shanaka, expected the crowd to stand behind them for the future, while Pakistan could keep themselves alive for the semifinal of the competition.

Let’s take a look at the three key factors that will decide the PAK vs SL Match 50

1.Babar Azam’s form

Once, there was a time when the entire tactic of Pakistan’s batting side revolved around Babar Azam, and now, in the current situation, Babar has no role in the team’s batting department. The 31-year-old is the leading run-getter of the shortest format with the help of 4596 runs in 136 innings at an average of 38.94 and a strike rate of 128.02, thanks to 39 fifties and three centuries.

Meanwhile, in his campaign, the right-handed batter has struggled to find his hands. In the previous game against England, batting in the fourth over of the clash, he returned with a 24-ball 25-run knock, which is a criminal knock in the modern generation, as many experts called it out. Pakistan will hope to see their batter returning to form.

2. Sri Lanka’s top four batting

For two consecutive games, Sri Lanka’s batting has fallen flat on its face. In the Kandy game of the afternoon, the Asian side got bundled out for 95 runs in 16.4 overs as only Pavan Rathnayake turned his score into double figures, which was only 10 runs. Their top four added only 19 runs in 24 balls, which never gave them the flourish at the beginning.

The same situation took place during the Kiwi clash when their top four collected 26 runs in 50 balls. This was included in the loss of their inform opening batter, Pathum Nissanka, for a golden duck as he failed to put bat on the ball, which swung late to break the stumps. Against Pakistan, they need runs from the top order.

3. Salman Ali Agha’s contribution

Captaining a side in a World Cup campaign is never an easy task, and Salman Ali Agha has felt the pressure multiplied 10 times for the Pakistan side. With the bat, he has collected only 48 runs in the last four innings, including four and five, respectively, against the two stronger sides- India and England. That has engaged the focus on him.

Salman Agha will need to be careful with his leadership. Some of his decisions in the field raised a few eyebrows in the last few games, which turned the game away from their grasp. He needs to be at his best if they want to change their fortune and get the victory in their favor.

On the cricket field, we have witnessed many astonishing catches, and this trend continues in the T20 World Cup 2026 as well. However, most of the catches so far had been taken individually, but Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka was dismissed by an excellent relay catch at the boundary, made possible by England's Will Jacks and Tom Banton, which is being widely talked about. Due to the fantastic coordination between Jacks and Banton, Shanaka's 30-run innings came to an end, and Sri Lanka could not narrow the margin of defeat significantly.

Will Jacks performed brilliantly in all three departments against Sri Lanka. Jacks scored 21 runs off 14 balls in batting. Then, in bowling, he took three wickets for 22 runs and also contributed in fielding by playing a key role in sending Dasun Shanaka back to the pavilion. Jacks has amazed with his batting and bowling several times, but today he excelled in fielding. This is why he is receiving a lot of praise.

In the 15th over of Sri Lanka's innings, on Adil Rashid's delivery, Dasun Shanaka played a backfoot pull shot, but then Will Jacks, positioned at deep mid-wicket, ran back to the left and caught the ball near the boundary.

Jaques and Banton took a brilliant relay catch of Shanaka

However, when Will Jacks started going beyond the boundary, he cleverly bounced the ball inward, and then Tom Banton completed the catch. After this, both players celebrated the superb catch. In this way, Shanaka's dismissal gave Sri Lanka its eighth blow.

England started their Super-8 campaign with a big win over Sri Lanka

If we talk about Sri Lanka vs England match in the Super-8 round of the T20 World Cup 2026, it was completely dominated by the visiting team. England defeated Sri Lanka by a large margin of 51 runs, thanks to their strong bowling. After losing the toss, England batted first and scored 146/9 in 20 overs, with the main contribution coming from Phil Salt, who scored 62 runs.

In response to the target, the entire Sri Lankan team was bowled out for 95 runs in just 16.4 overs. England strengthened their position in the match by taking five Sri Lankan wickets in the powerplay and then continued to bowl well, bundling Sri Lanka out for a low score. For England, Will Jacks was the most successful bowler.

England, after going through an unbeaten campaign in the group stage of the T20 World Cup 2026, didn’t make a strong start with the bat in their opening Super 8 clash against co-hosts Sri Lanka at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy. Meanwhile, the home side, after losing the last fixture against Zimbabwe, looked to be a different beast.

Sri Lanka sent back both out-of-form Jos Buttler and inform Jacob Bethell early in the innings. And their captain, Dasun Shanaka, produced a fine skill of fielding to inject new energy with the wicket of Tom Banton for six runs. It was the fourth delivery of the eighth over when Banton rushed for a single at the bowler’s end.

The ball, after one bounce, came into the hands of Shanaka, who was jammed at mid-off. He hit the stumps directly to break the stumps, as a dive wasn’t enough to save the right-handed batter, as he fell short of the crease on six runs. While running, his bat didn’t go straight, and that put the curtains down.

Tom Banton dismissed via run-out for 6 in ENG vs SL T20 WC 2026 clash

It was a crazy division for Banton in his T20I career. In 14 innings while batting first, he has managed only 231 runs at an average of 17.76 and a strike rate of 135.90, while in the chases, Banton has grabbed 413 runs in 15 innings at an average of 37.54 and a strike rate of 160.07.

Watch the video here:

For England, their opener, Phil Salt, scored a fine knock of 62 runs in 40 balls with the help of six boundaries and a pair of sixes for a strike rate of 155 before a tired shot found the field straight down the ground to end his knock.

Dunith Wellalage varied his pace beautifully with the three wickets of Phil Salt, Jos Buttler, and the opponent captain Harry Brook to finish with figures of 3/26 in four overs. England, somehow, made their way to 106/6 in 15 overs.

Brief Scores: England 120/6 (Phil Salt 62, Dunil Wellalage 3/26) vs Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka faced their first defeat of the group-stage clash of the T20 World Cup 2026 against Zimbabwe, who continued their unbeaten run in the competition with three wins, along with a no-result due to rain, at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Despite that, one of the special fielding performances of the game came from the Lankan captain, Dasun Shanaka.

It was the fifth delivery of the 19th over of the chase when Zimbabwe’s right-handed batter, Tashinga Musekiwa, went for a slog against Dushan Hemantha, as the ball went high in the air straight down the ground, but didn’t get the potential elevation to go beyond the boundary rope, which saw Dasun Shanaka running towards it.

The Sri Lanka captain, despite it being Dunith Wellalage’s catch having run from the long-off region, took the onus on his shoulder and ran back from the mid-on region. He never took his eyes off the ball and held onto a skimmer, even as he avoided running directly towards the teammate, which was another positive.

Earlier in the game, Sri Lanka recorded a strong score of 178 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their allotted 20 overs of the innings. Pathum Nissanka clubbed 62 runs in 41 balls with the help of eight boundaries at a strike rate of 151.22, while their middle-order batter, Pavan Rathanayake, got 44 runs in just 25 balls, thanks to three boundaries and two sixes.

Watch the video here:

Three bowlers of the Zimbabwe bowling department, Blessing Muzarabani, Brad Evans, and Graeme Creamer, picked up two wickets each in the innings. The chase was expected to be a tough one for the Zimbabwe side.

However, Brian Bennett saw the chase off with an unbeaten knock of 63 runs in 48 balls, scoring eight boundaries, while captain Sikandar Raza played a gem of a knock with 45 runs in 26 balls with the help of four over boundaries and two boundaries as they completed the chase by six wickets in 19.3 overs.

Brief Scores: Zimbabwe 182/4 (Brian Bennett 63*, Sikandar Raza 45, Dushan Hemantha 2/36) beat Sri Lanka 178/7 (Pathum Nissanka 62, Graeme Creamer 2/27) by 6-wickets.

As the Super 8s approach, Sri Lanka will play Zimbabwe on February 18 at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo as part of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Both teams will have already qualified for this phase of the tournament, which means they will want to maintain their momentum going into the knockout stages. Sri Lanka lead Group B after winning three consecutive matches thus far, demonstrating their ability to perform consistently with both bat and ball. A continued strong performance would only add to their confidence and rhythm leading into the final stretch of the tournament.

Zimbabwe, on the other hand, have enjoyed a spectacular campaign; they have made it all the way to the Super 8s after not qualifying for the previous tournament, even beating Australia to do so. They have displayed steady improvement and resilience throughout their tournament run and have become one of its dark horses. As such, their match against an in-form Sri Lankan side will provide them with a significant test of their ability to perform when the pressure is highest. With both teams having already qualified for the Super 8s, they will use this match to assess their team combinations, hone their strategies and build momentum leading up to the next series of matches in which they will compete for the title.

Sri Lanka are set to face Australia at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele on February 16 in a high-profile clash in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. The Islanders have enjoyed a dominant start to their campaign, registering comprehensive victories in both matches so far. They began with a 29-run win over Ireland before delivering a commanding 105-run triumph against Oman. With confidence high and momentum on their side, Sri Lanka will aim to continue their impressive run.

Australia, meanwhile, have experienced a mixed tournament. After opening with a win against Ireland, the 2021 T20 World champions were stunned by Zimbabwe in a 23-run defeat, falling short while chasing 170. That unexpected loss has placed them under pressure heading into this crucial fixture. The upcoming contest holds significant importance for both sides, as Sri Lanka look to secure qualification for the Super Eight stage, while Australia fight to keep their campaign alive.

Sri Lanka delivered a commanding performance to defeat Oman by 105 runs in Match 16 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. After being asked to bat, the Islanders piled up a massive 225/5 in their 20 overs, setting the tone for a one-sided contest. Despite a steady half-century from Mohammad Nadeem, Oman never truly threatened the target and finished on 120/9. The comprehensive victory strengthened Sri Lanka’s position in Group B and highlighted their growing momentum in the tournament.

Sri Lanka's innings progressed quickly after a shaky beginning. While both Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishara were both dismissed cheaply, Kusal Mendis held together the innings, scoring 61 from 45 balls. The innings took off at speed with the introduction of Pavan Rathnayake, who mowed down the Omani bowlers for 60 runs off just 28 balls, combining beautiful shots with tremendous power. The aggressive manner in which he played altered the momentum of the match significantly in favour of Sri Lanka, and as a result, the run rate during the latter stages of the first innings continued to increase to a point where Oman could no longer control or reduce the flow of runs to the Sri Lankan team.

Captain Dasun Shanaka then unleashed a blistering assault, smashing 50 from only 20 balls with five towering sixes. His late flourish, along with quick cameos from Kamindu Mendis and Dunith Wellalage, propelled Sri Lanka past the 220 mark. Oman’s bowlers struggled to contain the scoring, with only Shah Faisal managing a respectable economy rate. The 58 runs scored in the powerplay laid a strong platform, but it was the explosive finish that truly buried the opposition.

Bowlers Seal the Deal

Defending a daunting total, Sri Lanka’s bowlers wasted no time asserting dominance. Dushmantha Chameera struck twice early, while Maheesh Theekshana’s tight spell of 2/11 choked Oman’s scoring options. The disciplined bowling effort ensured Oman never built meaningful partnerships. Although Mohammad Nadeem fought hard for his unbeaten 53, wickets kept falling at regular intervals, preventing any chance of a recovery or late surge.

Sri Lanka maintained relentless pressure throughout the chase, combining sharp fielding with intelligent bowling changes. Dunith Wellalage, Kamindu Mendis, and Dushan Hemantha all chipped in with key breakthroughs to dismantle Oman’s middle and lower order. Oman managed only 36 runs in the powerplay and failed to accelerate thereafter. The emphatic 105-run triumph not only boosted Sri Lanka’s net run rate but also sent a strong message to the rest of the competition about their all-round strength.

Top Performance

Dasun Shanaka stood out with a breathtaking 50 off just 20 deliveries, smashing five sixes to provide Sri Lanka with a thunderous finish. Walking in during the latter half of the innings, the skipper shifted gears instantly, dismantling Oman’s bowling attack with clean, fearless hitting. His explosive knock, complemented by Pavan Rathnayake’s rapid 60 and Kusal Mendis’ steady 61, propelled Sri Lanka to a daunting 225/5. Shanaka’s intent in the death overs ensured the total moved from competitive to virtually unassailable.

Key Moments

During the middle overs, the turning point of the match occurred when Sri Lanka's Pavan Rathnayake scored an aggressive 60 runs off 28 balls, breaking the resistance of Oman and boosting the run rate for Sri Lanka. In the latter part of the match, Maheesh Theekshana's economical bowling with figures of 2/11 ended any hopes for an Oman comeback in their chase. Early wickets from Dushmantha Chameera severely impacted the confidence of Oman in the powerplay, as Oman was reduced to only 36 runs. After that point, the match moved decidedly in Sri Lanka's favour, assuring a comprehensive win with a margin of 105 runs.

Sri Lanka will face England in the third and final T20I of the series on Tuesday, February 3, at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. With England already leading the series 2-0, the hosts will be desperate to avoid a clean sweep and finish the series on a positive note.

Led by Dasun Shanaka, Sri Lanka have struggled to match the intensity of England in the first two matches. The batting lineup has not been able to perform well, and the bowlers have struggled to restrict England’s aggressive fielding. With the T20 World Cup looming, Sri Lanka would be looking to perform well in all departments and regain some confidence.

England, on the other hand, have been in complete command. The batting lineup has been dominating the show, and the bowlers have been supporting them well at crucial times. This match will be their final official outing before the T20 World Cup warm-up games, and they will want to maintain their winning momentum.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has locked its 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 under the leadership of Dasun Shanaka. Most of the formation of the team will remain the same from the squad that featured in the three-match T20I series against England at home, as preparation for the ICC event.

Kusal Perera marks his return to the national side in the shortest format after his previous series against Pakistan away from home. In 91 innings of the format, the veteran has smashed a total of 2312 runs at an average of 26.57 and a strike rate of 132.87 with the help of 16 half-centuries and one century at the best score of 101 runs.

Pavan Ratnayake, who celebrated a fine knock of 121 runs during the third ODI in Colombo against England in the recent home series, has been selected for the ICC event, despite a weak performance of eight runs in three games in his career. In 25 T20s, he has added 253 runs at a strike rate of 100, thanks to the best score of 42 runs.

The pressure will be on the leader, Shanaka, to provide a vital contribution with the bat in the lower order and offer a few vital overs if required. Wanindu Hasaranga is another player who needs to pick wickets consistently in the middle overs, having picked up 151 wickets in 91 innings at an average of 15.92 and an economy rate of under seven.

Sri Lanka will begin their tournament on February 08 against Ireland at the R Premadasa Cricket Stadium in Colombo before facing Oman three days later at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy. Their third group-stage encounter will be against Australia at the same venue and Zimbabwe in Colombo.

After a rain-affected result in the series opener, Sri Lanka will once again host England for the second T20I of the three-match series at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy on Sunday, February 1. The Lankan side struggled in the first match, being bowled out for just 133 in 16.2 overs despite a promising start from Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka. Their bowling also failed to contain the English batsmen on a tricky wicket. Sri Lanka will be aiming for a much-improved performance to stay alive in the series.

England, meanwhile, executed their plans well in the opening encounter. Sam Curran and Adil Rashid were particularly effective with the ball, taking three wickets each and keeping the hosts under pressure. With the bat, Phil Salt capitalized on the powerplay to set the tone for the innings. The Three Lions maintained control throughout, ensuring that the rain-affected result favored them. England will look to continue their dominance and secure an unassailable lead in the series on Sunday.
