The England bowling all-rounder, Jamie Overton, has decided to quit red-ball cricket for a long period as he has taken an indefinite break from the longest format of the game. In a statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), he revealed the decision after ‘a great deal of thought.’

Overton, whose last of the two red-ball encounters came during the recent fifth Test of the five-match series against India at the Kennington Oval in South London, has picked up four wickets and smashed 106 runs in international cricket at an average of 35.33 with the best score of 97 runs against New Zealand.

“Red-ball, first-class cricket has provided the foundation for my professional career and has been the gateway to every opportunity I’ve had in the game so far. It’s where I learnt the game, and it fueled the goals and ambitions that have driven me for so long.” Overton expressed the statement of the ECB quoted.

In 99 first-class cricket for the Surrey side, Overton has overall clubbed 2410 runs at an average of 21.51, scoring one century and 13 half-centuries, while with the ball, the right-arm pacer has grabbed 239 wickets at an average of 31.66, thanks to the best bowling figure of 6/61 in an innings with seven five-wicket hauls.

“However, at this stage of my career, with the demands of cricket across a 12-month calendar, it’s no longer possible to commit fully to all formats at every level, both physically and mentally. Going forward, my focus will be on white-ball cricket, and I will continue to give everything to play at the highest level for as long as I can.” The Chennai Super Kings all-rounder addressed.

The 31-year-old’s decision has come just seven weeks before the opening Test of the five-match series against Australia at Optus Stadium in Perth for Ashes 2025/26. The national side will now need to find a suitable replacement in the all-rounder’s position for the series down under.

There was incredible pressure on India coming into the fifth day of the fifth Test of the five-match series between England and India at the Kennington Oval, with the home side needing just 35 runs to win with four wickets in hand, including the wicket-keeper, inform batter, Jamie Smith. Jamie Overton’s two boundaries at the start of the day erased the pressure.

But Mohammed Siraj brought them back in the contest with the wicket of Smith, who, after missing the first three balls, got an outside edge into the hands of the wicket-keeper behind the stumps. Overton was still at the crease, which was the biggest positive for the home side.

Then came another huge moment on the penultimate ball of the 80th over, when Siraj wrapped Overton on the pads. It seemed to be snicking down the leg side. But umpire Kumar Dharmasena raised his finger after taking so much time as the batter called for the review. Once it was given out in the field, even the batter knew that it would be hard to turn around.

The replays showed that the ball, after pitching, went down the leg side. However, that was enough for it to clip the leg stump as the umpire’s call sent the batter out of the park for nine runs in 17 balls. Siraj was pumped, as were his teammates. They found a new energy in the game.

India, under Shubman Gill’s captaincy, made a good plan around the field placement. They kept three slip fielders to search for the wicket, but they also had men around the boundary to keep the runs in the tank. Gill also kept a fielder at the third man, who was saving the flying shot over the slip fielders.

The pressure was on the home batters, besides which the heavens also decided to share a moment as it started to drizzle at the Oval. The potential victory would draw the series for the Blue Brigade, which would be an incredible achievement after the Lord’s defeat, where the England side took a 2-1 lead in the series.

<![CDATA[Big Breaking! CSK list for player releasing out ahead of IPL 2026]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/big-breaking-csk-list-for-player-releasing-out-ahead-of-ipl-2026/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/big-breaking-csk-list-for-player-releasing-out-ahead-of-ipl-2026/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 15:32:09 GMT

The IPL 2025 season proved to be a forgettable one for Chennai Super Kings, with the five-time title winners finishing bottom of the table. CSK managed only 4 victories in 14 games and did not make it to the playoffs, showing neither consistency nor fire across departments. The franchise also failed to find the right combination under a new leadership era after MS Dhoni.

Though some young players and old-timers gave glimpses of promise, some members of the squad were woefully short. In the build-up to the IPL 2026 auction, a drastic overhaul is on the cards, and the following six players are expected to be released:

1. Rachin Ravindra

New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra played 8 games, making 191 runs at an average of 27.29 and a strike rate of 128.19 with two half-centuries. He lacked consistency, though, and more often than not failed to make an impression from his starts. His left-arm spin was not properly utilized, having very little effect. With CSK looking for a more attacking and multi-faceted top-order player, Ravindra will probably be let go.

2. Sam Curran

Sam Curran featured in 5 matches, scoring 114 runs with an average of 22.80 and a strike rate of 135.71. With the ball, he scalped 5 wickets but conceded runs in plenty, ending with an economy of 11.08. He was bought by CSK in the IPL 2025 auction for INR 2.40 Cr. Even though he has had past CSK experiences, he did not contribute much in either form in 2025. As his price is high and he didn't yield much return, CSK might unload him to accommodate more effective overseas players.

3. Vijay Shankar

Vijay Shankar scored 118 runs from 5 games at an average of 39.33 and a strike rate of 129.67, including one half-century. He was acquired by CSK for ₹1.2 crore at the IPL 2025 auction. But his contribution did not have any match-winning value, and he wasn't given a chance to bowl. His existence as a reserve Indian all-rounder is redundant in CSK's new team dynamic. With younger options present, his chances of being retained are less.

4. Deepak Hooda

Deepak Hooda's season was not good, with just 31 runs in 6 games at a woeful average of 6.20 and a strike rate of 75.61. He was acquired by CSK at the 2025 IPL Auction for INR 1.7 crore. Despite being experimented with in the middle order, he couldn't push the game along or steady the ship in crisis situations. He did not get a bowl and exerted no impact in any match. With his form not being good and no single good performance, he is sure to be released.

5. Jamie Overton

Jamie Overton was signed by CSK during the IPL 2025 auction. jamie Overton played only 2 matches in IPL 2025, conceding runs at a very high economy rate of 13.83 with the bat scoring 15 at a strike rate of 214.29. He was picked as a pace-bowling all-rounder but never earned the trust of the management for his services in the big matches. With so little contribution and overseas spots being precious, Overton is expected to be one of the first few to be let go of releases.

6. Rahul Tripathi

Rahul Tripathi was acquired by CSK for INR 3.40 crore at the 2025 IPL Auction. He played 5 games and managed just 55 runs at an average of 11.00 and a strike rate of 96.49. As brought in for adding depth to the top order, he could not get into rhythm or contribute at all. His failure put more pressure on a batting lineup already fragile. With form and confidence being lacking, his retention also looks extremely unlikely.

The England and Wales Cricket Board has made a surprising selection ahead of their first Test match against India. They make a recall to the bowling all-rounder Jamie Overton for the inaugural contest of the 5-match series.

The pacer, with the amount of pace and batting abilities, impressed against New Zealand in whites, but due to injury reasons, he had to spend some hard time outside the field. Like Overton, England cricket had to face multiple injury issues in their first lineup, which forced the selectors to add some new faces in the setup for the India series.

Overton was not in their initial plan; a hamstring injury to his Surrey teammate Gus Atkinson paved a path for Overton to make a Test team return. Atkinson is already ruled out of the match due to injury. Jamie made his only Test appearance in Leeds against New Zealand in June 2022. In that match the Englishman scored 97 in the first innings and bagged a couple of wickets.

England's selector explained their views about Jamie Overton

In a recent ODI match against the West Indies, the 31-year-old impressed the selectors by taking 3 wickets. He broke his little finger last week during an ODI against the West Indies and missed multiple matches.

England's selector Luke Wright said about the inclusion in the Test squad, "Jamie showed in white-ball cricket that he's got a huge amount of pace and bounce, and he's a real threat. He's obviously had a taste of Test cricket before and did well, getting some runs, which was great. He's going back to the ground he did well at Leeds, and for us, it's making sure that we've got the options."

England squad for first Test vs India: Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith (wk), Ben Stokes (capt), Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes.

England receive a huge jolt ahead of the second ODI against the West Indies, slated to be played on June 1. Jamie Overton has been ruled out for the remainder of the white-ball series, which involved two ODIs and three T20Is. The seam-bowling all-rounder sustained an injury by breaking his right little finger in the first ODI at Edgbaston.

Overton will now be incorporated into a rehab program under the close supervision of the England medical team. The ECB will not announce a replacement for him for the remainder of the series.

ECB issues statement on Overton's injury

The ECB issued a media release on Saturday, shedding light on Overton's unfortunate injury update. The statement said the following:

“England and Surrey all-rounder Jamie Overton has been ruled out of the remaining Metro Bank One-Day Internationals and the Vitality IT20s against the West Indies due to a broken right little finger. Overton sustained the injury during England’s first Metro Bank ODI victory at Edgbaston on Thursday. He will now undergo a period of rehabilitation under the supervision of the England medical team. No replacement will be added to the ODI squad.”

More details of his injury are awaited at this stage. Overton played a key role with the ball in the first ODI and returned formidable figures of 3-22, which included prize scalps of Chase, Forde, and Motie. His absence from the squad might be felt by England leading into the series, as Overton is considered one of the finest white-ball prospects for England in recent times.

England all-rounder Jamie Overton will play for the Adelaide Strikers again in the next season of the Big Bash League (BBL). The team has signed him as an international pre-signing ahead of the upcoming overseas draft.

Overton has played 18 matches for the Strikers in the last two seasons and was named the 'Most Valuable Player' (MVP) last season. He has taken 27 wickets so far and has an economy rate of 8.81. He also played a key role as a finisher with the bat, scoring 276 runs with a strike rate of 150.81. In one match against the Sydney Sixers last season, he scored an unbeaten 32 runs off just 14 balls.

Since last year, a new rule has been introduced in the BBL. According to this rule, teams can sign a foreign player before the draft if the player is available for the full season, including the final matches. This rule was made to stop players from leaving during the last part of the season.

Strikers coach Tim Paine was happy to sign Overton again. In a statement, he said, "Signing Jamie before the draft was our top priority. In the last two seasons, he has done very well with both bat and ball. His energy lifts the whole team. He can change the game in just a few overs."

Overton also shared his excitement about returning. He said, "I’m very happy to be back in Adelaide. I’ve had a great time with the Strikers, and the support at Adelaide Oval is amazing. This time, we are aiming for the BBL title."

With Overton’s signing, the Sydney Sixers are now the only team that has not pre-signed any foreign player. On the other hand, players like Colin Munro (Brisbane Heat), Chris Jordan (Hobart Hurricanes), Tim Seifert (Melbourne Renegades), Tom Curran (Melbourne Stars), Finn Allen (Perth Scorchers), and Sam Billings (Sydney Thunder) are already on two-year deals.

There will be some changes in the Strikers squad this season. Brendan Doggett and Jake Weatherald have joined the Renegades and Hurricanes as free agents. Jason Sangha, who played well for South Australia, has joined the Strikers from the Thunder.

Adelaide Strikers squad:

Cameron Boyce, Jordan Buckingham, Alex Carey, Thomas Kelly, Harry Nielsen, Jamie Overton, Lloyd Pope, Alex Ross, Jason Sangha, Matt Short, Henry Thornton
