The Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2025 is going to make history as the Indian players are expected to be part of the competition for the very first time. The upcoming sixth season of the event, which will begin on December 01, will be one of the craziest editions in the presence of the Indian players, who will bring a different flavor to the premier T20 competition of Sri Lanka.

Dinesh Karthik, the former wicket-keeper batter of the Indian side and the current mentor of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) of the Indian Premier League (IPL), featured in the last season of the SA20 for the Paarl Royals. Many reckon that he could also look to be a part of the LPL 2025, which will add more star power to the tournament.

A total of 13 Indian players- Piyush Chawla, Siddharth Kaul, Ankit Rajpoot, Sarul Kanwar, Anureet Singh Kathuria, Ansari Marouf, Mahesh Ahir, Nikhil Jaga, Mohamed Faidh, KS Naveen, Imran Khan, Venkatesh Galipelly, and Atul Yadav, who was part of the SA20 auction list, have made it into the LPL.

Among these names, Chawla, Kaul, and Rajpoot will bring a huge experience of the IPL. The premier leg spinner of the national side has represented them at the international level, along with his incredible success in the franchise league. If he indeed makes it into the LPL, it will be a significant move for Indian cricket as the BCCI will allow their retired players to be part of the foreign T20 leagues.

Irfan Pathan and Munaf Patel could also be part of the competition, which will feature five franchises in a double round-robin format, with 20 league matches. The top four sides will then progress into the playoffs, including the Eliminator, Qualifier 1 and 2, and the final.

Ravichandran Ashwin, the premier Indian spinner who retired from international cricket and IPL recently, will feature in the Big Bash League (BBL) for the Sydney Thunder, being the very first Indian player to be part of the tournament. The LPL 2025 will add a thrilling chapter in franchise cricket in the presence of Indian players.

The Canada Super 60 League 2025 is a thrilling 60-ball cricket tournament featuring six exciting teams: Mississauga Masters, Vancouver Kings, Brampton Blitz, Toronto Sixers, White Rock Warriors, and Montreal Royal Tigers.

The 6th edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) is returning later this year. After being suspended in July, the league will now take place from December 1 to 23, 2025. This will be the first time the LPL has taken place in the December window, giving fans more cricket to enjoy during the festive period. .

According to a report from IANS, the upcoming edition will feature a total of 24 matches, comprising 20 league fixtures and 4 knockout games, hosted across three premier venues – R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo, Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy, and Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium in Dambulla. The report also added that Indian cricketers are also set to feature in the Lanka Premier League for the first time in history. "For the very first time, Indian cricketers are expected to join the action; their names will be revealed soon, adding a whole new level of excitement for fans across the region," a press release said.

It is likely that R Ashwin, Dinesh Karthik, and also the likes of Piyush Chawla will register their name for the LPL. Although, it is worth noting that in the past, Irfan Pathan has played in Sri Lanka's premier T20 league. “The timing of this edition has been carefully chosen to ensure that players gain maximum exposure and high-quality match practice in the lead-up to a global cricketing year. Over the seasons, the LPL has emerged as a breeding ground for fresh talent, with several youngsters making their mark alongside international stars. This year too, we believe the league will throw up exciting new names who can go on to spring surprises on the world stage ahead of the World Cup,” Samantha Dodanwela, Tournament Director, LPL, said.

Tournament promises exciting action

LPL Tournament Director Samantha Dodanwela said the timing of this season has been chosen carefully so players can gain good match experience before a busy cricketing year. The LPL has helped many young Sri Lankan players make a name for themselves, and this year’s edition is expected to do the same.

The 2025 edition will feature five teams, but details about them are yet to be confirmed. Interestingly, the LPL will also clash with the ILT20 and BBL 2025–26, which could make player selection and scheduling quite interesting.

SA20 is getting ready for its fourth edition auction, as more than 750 players have registered their names for the upcoming auction, where 13 players are from India, including an IPL legend. 

SA20 4 has been scheduled between December 26, 2025, and January 25, 2026, as the tournament has been scheduled earlier due to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 schedule, which India and Sri Lanka will host between February and March 2026. On September 9, the SA20 auction will be held. A total of 784 players have registered their names for the upcoming auction. 

Piyush Chawla registered for SA20 auction

IPL legend Piyush Chawla, who is the joint third leading wicket-taker at present (192 wickets), has registered his name for the upcoming SA20 auction. Chawla also served for India in 35 international games, while the leg-spinner was a member of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 winning team. Chawla has a reserve price of 1,000,000 Rand for the upcoming SA20 auction.

Also, former Indian cricketer Siddarth Kaul, who played six matches for India and 55 IPL matches, is also in the upcoming SA20 auction, along with Ankit Rajpoot, who played 29 IPL matches. Kaul was India's joint leading wicket-taker when Virat Kohli-led India U19 won the ICC U19 World Cup 2008. 

Apart from these three players, the other Indians for the upcoming SA20 auction registration are Mahesh Ahir, Sarul Kanwar, Anureet Singh Kathuria, Nikhil Jaga, Mohamed Faidh, KS Naveen, Ansari Marouf, Imran Khan, Venkatesh Galipelly, and Atul Yadav. While Imran Khan has a base value of 500,000 Rand, the other 11 Indian cricketers all have a base value of 200,000 Rand.

Due to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI )'s strict rules, only retired cricketers and inactive national and IPL players can join the overseas franchise cricket league. However, the active Indian cricketers and IPL cricketers can participate in the English County Championship cricket and one-day cricket with the permission of the central governing board.

Dinesh Karthik played last SA20

Last season, Dinesh Karthik participated in the SA20, serving for Paarl Royals, who were eliminated from Qualifier 2 after finishing in second position in the league stage points table. 

There are 84 slots available for six franchises that can spend upto USD 7.4 million in the forthcoming SA20 auction. 150 English cricketers and 40 Pakistan players have also registered for the upcoming auction. 

The year 2025 has been a year plagued by retirements. The 6th of June marked the departure of another cricketing gem. In another shocking development, Indian wrist-spinner Piyush Chawla has announced his retirement from all formats at the age of 36. His last appearance came in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) during UP's clash against Himachal on November 25, 2024. He ended his spell with figures of 4-12. 

Chawla has represented India in seven Tests, 32 ODIs, and four T20Is. Furthermore, he was the part of the Indian squad that won the inagural T20 World Cup edition and the 2011 ODI World Cup at home. Although his association with the national side was short-lived, Chawla went on to make a big name for himself in franchise cricket. 

In his IPL career spanning 16 years long, Chawla claimed 192 wickets representing four franchises mostly notably, PBKS, KKR, CSK, and MI. Besides, he made his international debut against England in a Test series in March 2006 making him the second-youngest male debutant for India after the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.

The Aligarh-born wrist spinner made his retirement public on his Instagram account. He posted a heartfelt message to his avid supporters stating that the time has come for him to step away from the cricketing field after two successful decades of passionate cricket. He further highlighted some of his glorious moments in his cricketing career from the highs of 2007 T20 World Cup to the triumph of the 2011 World Cup win at home that ended the 28-year-long wait for India. 

“After more than two decades on the field, the time has come to bid adieu to the beautiful game. From representing India at the highest level to being part of the victorious 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup squads, every moment in this incredible journey has been nothing short of a blessing. These memories will forever remain etched in my heart.”

Chawla was a deceptive leg spinner who was not renowned to be a big turner of the ball. But he had variations up his sleeve to outfox the batters. After playing a majority of his cricket in the shortest format, Chawla developed a wide range of variations over the years including the googly, flipper and the quicker ball making him a highly reliable asset.

According to him, the team appears to be confident and in command of each game.

As per Chawla, the best thing about Mumbai Indians' recent performances is how convincingly they are winning. He described how the bowlers as well as the batters are getting their work done flawlessly. In fact, the top-order batters have been playing so well that the middle order has not even been required to bat much. That's a big indication of a team performing exceptionally well, because it indicates they're winning games comprehensively right from the beginning.

He also added that the players are playing fantastically. Rohit Sharma, who was not scoring much previously, has now also begun playing well again. Hardik Pandya also performs with both bat and ball. This all-rounder performance has increased his confidence, and it is evident in how he is leading the team.
