After the end of the ongoing T20I tri-series between Zimbabwe, South Africa, and New Zealand, where New Zealand and South Africa will face each other in the Final on this Saturday (July 26) after the last two league stage games, Zimbabwe and New Zealand will play a two-match Test series. Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo will host both the Tests, starting on July 30 and August 7. Both Tests will be the traditional five-day Test matches. It will be their first Test meeting since 2016, when the visitors won the two-match Test series in Zimbabwe by 2-0. As Zimbabwe aren't part of the ICC World Test Championship, the forthcoming Test series will not be a part of the 2025-2027 ICC World Test Championship.

Ben Curran and Sikandar Raza return to Test cricket

Craig Ervine will continue his Test leadership role, while Ben Curran and Sikandar Raza have returned to the Test squad. Ben Curran missed out on the recently concluded home Test series against South Africa due to a fractured hand, which he suffered during a warm-up game against South Africa. Meanwhile, Sikandar Raza has returned to the Test squad after missing the home Test series against South Africa due to MLC 2025 commitment. Also, Roy Kaia and Tanunurwa Makoni have returned to Test cricket, having played three and two Test matches, respectively.

Brendan Taylor likely to return to international cricket

On the other hand, the 39-year-old Bendan Taylor hasn't been named in the Test squad for the upcoming home series against New Zealand. His three-and-a-half-year ban for breaching the ICC anti-corruption code will end this Friday, July 25. According to ESPNcricinfo's report, Taylor is likely to make his international cricket comeback in the upcoming first Test against New Zealand, as he is likely to be added once his ban expires officially. 

Zimbabwe lost their last match by 8 wickets against New Zealand and currently occupy the bottom position in the points table.

On the other hand, South Africa got off to a winning start in the Zimbabwe Tri-Series with a victory over the hosts last Monday but they were then stopped in their tracks by New Zealand on Wednesday who saw them off by a margin of 21 runs.

Zimbabwe T20I captain Sikandar Raza created history in T20I cricket during the home T20I tri-series opener against South Africa, where he scored a fighting half-century in the interesting match.

After South Africa chose to field first, Zimbabwe had a slow start. Captain Sikandar Raza came to bat at no.4 after Clive Madande was dismissed in the eighth over of the innings. Raza fought hard and scored 54 not out off 38 balls with three fours and two sixes, as Zimbabwe managed to score 141/6 in 20 overs. During that fighting innings, he had a 66-run partnership with Ryan Burl for the fourth wicket.

With that knock, the Zimbabwean skipper Sikandar Raza completed his 1000 T20I runs as a captain. With 39 wickets and 1033 runs as a T20I captain, Raza became the first T20I captain among the ICC Full Members and third overall T20I captain to record 1000 runs and 25 wickets. Namibian captain Gerhard Erasmus and PNG captain Assad Vala first two names in this list.

Sikandar Raza set another T20I record

It was also another historic day for the skipper Sikandar Raza, as playing his 39th T20I match as a Zimbabwe captain, he set a new record for most T20I matches as a captain for Zimbabwe. Craig Ervine was the previous record holder in this list with 38 T20I matches, and last captained the Chevrons T20I side in 2023.  

South Africa won comfortably after tough start

In reply, South Africa lost their first three batters in the powerplay, as they were struggling at 38/3 at the end of the powerplay. However, international cricket debutant Rubin Hermann (45) and T20I comeback Dewald Brevis (41) secured a comfortable win for the Proteas, as they chased down the target in 15.5 overs after losing by five wickets.  

Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza came in to bat at No. 4 when the team was in trouble. He put together an important 66-run stand with Ryan Burl to steady things. Raza kept the scoreboard ticking by taking singles and hitting the bad balls for boundaries. He stayed calm and reached a fine half-century. He finished unbeaten on 54 from 38 balls, hitting 3 fours and 2 sixes at a strong strike rate of 142.11.

This knock made Raza only the fourth Zimbabwe player to score a T20I fifty against South Africa. Before him, only Brendan Taylor, Hamilton Masakadza, and Chamu Chibhabha had done it.

Thanks to Raza’s fighting innings, Zimbabwe managed to post 141 for 6 in the first match of the T20I Tri-Nation Series. Once again, Raza showed why he is Zimbabwe’s biggest T20 cricket star by leading from the front.

Zimbabwe T20I skipper Sikandar Raza has filed a proper complaint with the Harare Metropolitan Cricket Association (HMCA) against local coach Blessing Mafuwa for racially abusing him on June 1 during a domestic Vigne Cup game. The incident reportedly took place at Old Hararians Sports Club, where Raza was playing for Old Harrians against Rainbow Cricket Club.

The incident occurred while he was leaving the field following his batting innings, Raza told the paper. Though he did not name the coach in his complaint, HMCA chairperson Tafadzwa Madoro assured ESPNcricinfo that the suspect was Rainbow's coach, Blessing Mafuwa.

"We were informed of racial abuse that our T20 captain [Raza] endured last week," said Madoro. "We are investigating. Blessing Mafuwa will face a hearing next Tuesday. In the meantime, he is suspended from all activities in the HMCA." The HMCA has made it unequivocally clear that it will not stand for any kind of racial abuse. Madoro ensured that the issue was being treated with the highest seriousness and urgency.

Raza Demands Accountability After Alleged Racist Abuse Amid Stellar Run of Form

Raza, who is one of the best and most outspoken cricketers from Zimbabwe, was disappointed at what had happened and called for a proper probe. “If found guilty, an example should be made out of him so that stuff like this never happens again to this and future generations,” he said. Despite the row, Raza played one of his best games, scoring 78 off 56 balls to assist Old Hararians in piling up a huge 402 for 9 in 50 overs. Rainbow Cricket Club replied with 225 for 8 in 39 overs before rain interrupted the play. Old Hararians won by 142 runs through the DLS system.

Raza's current form has been nothing less than incredible. He has already won two franchise T20 titles in 2025, first the ILT20 and more recently the Pakistan Super League, where he hit the winning runs for Lahore Qalandars in a thrilling final. While the cricket world praised Raza's playing heroics, the off-field controversy has once again brought into focus long-existing racism issues in sport. In anticipation of its next disciplinary hearing, everyone will be watching to see how the association meets this delicate and serious situation.
