Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) secured a 14-run victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) in an exhilarating IPL 2025 Match 48 on April 29, 2025, at Arun Jaitley Stadium. At a posted trot of 204/9 from KKR, DC managed to chase 190 with all effort but ultimately fell short when the decisive bowling pressure came in from KKR. Let's check why DC lost this game.

The first reason is that DC could not defend a competitive total, which was 204/9, by way of poor bowling and no breakthroughs made at all. KKR's batsmen, led by Raghuvanshi (66), Rinku Singh, and Sunil Narine, had almost demoralized the bowling attack of Mitchell Starc (3/43) and Vipuraj Nigam (2/41) with their onslaught during the powerplay and the middle overs thanks to 44 off 32 deliveries from Angkrish Raghuvanshi and 36 off 25 balls from Rinku Singh. DC had some low contributions from its bowlers, such as Mitchell Starc (3/43) and Vipuraj Nigam (2/41). While DC had not come to chase a target of that magnitude, there were questions regarding KKR's attunement to Indian conditions in getting a score such as that. 

A perplexing fight, though, with the quick-fire abs of Axar Patel (43 off 23) and Vipuraj Nigam (38 off 19), with some fight back by turning pretty much—I feel it's only towards the end that they're not going to be able to up the ante—caused KKR's death bowling - Varun specifically (2/39) and Vaibhav Arora (1/19)—and sealed an interesting but doomed run chase.

1. Inconsistent Top-Order Performance

While Faf du Plessis offered a good start with a stylish 62 off 45 balls, there was no support from the rest of Delhi's top-order batting. The early wickets and lack of solid partnerships in the powerplay put pressure on the middle order to try and repair the slow start. This inconsistency at the top hindered the momentum of the Capitals in a chase of over 200, as they found themselves in a catch-up for the rest of their innings.

2. Kolkata's Bowling Impact in Crucial Moments

KKR bowlers at key moments worked with a will for Sunil Narine (3/29) to wrest key breakthroughs. Narine broke the middle order's back while containing runs strongly in the middle. Varun Chakravarthy and Vaibhav Arora lent timely wickets and disciplined spells, all putting a wrench in Delhi's efforts to accelerate, especially from the moment the asking rate leaped sharply in the death overs.

3. Expensive Bowling Despite Wicket-Taking

Delhi bowlers Mitchell Starc and Vipraj Nigam took two very vital wickets but gave away runs at an expensive rate-Starc 43 runs and Nigam 41 runs. Those overcosting Delhi would allow KKR to put up the stiff 204/9 run target. The inability to control the scoring, especially in the death overs, meant that Delhi’s batters had a stiffer target than ideal, ultimately proving too much to overcome despite a strong fightback.

The DC managed a good fight but in the end got knocked out for 190 at the loss of 9 wickets, which made the distance separating them from victory just 14 runs. Faf du Plessis was the star with 62 off 45 balls, bringing DC into the game. There was also Axar Patel scoring 43 off 23 balls toward the end. Vipuraj Nigam added 38 off 19 balls at the tail end, but the middle order went crumbling under pressure. The hosts' bowlers Sunil Narine (3/29) and Varun Chakaravarthy (2/39) were ably supported by Vaibhav (1/19), restricting DC despite their effort on a high-scoring track.

Andre Russell (KKR): Russell celebrates while on his birthday, saying, “Team members wanted to give this win as a cross to me because nothing beats a win as an awesome IPL gift!” He praised an over in which all things began to change rapidly following two wickets, of Warden and then of du Plessis: “Sunil, having one great over, instilled the momentum; the bowlers, with Russell taking yorkers and K. Chakaravarty's leg spin, bowled so well against Delhi, the new 15-to-20-run differential inflicted on us during the power play proven to be so heavily over."

Axar Patel (Delhi Capitals Captain): Feeling that they gave 15 or so more runs in the powerplay and misreading the final chase, Patel said, "Vipul came in and made 38 off 19, and I subsequently took up the 43 off 23 from there." As she had felt any close losses being painful this year, she sighed of needing a partnership to chase 205 on that surface.

Ajinkya Rahane (KKR Captain): Rahane, who had a mild knock he had seen toed into, was full of praise, saying, "I will be fine; Sunil bowled two good overs post-13 overs and removed Rahul Tewatia and Vipul." From the other side, he rued how he might probably have praised the top score of 204: "Very honestly, that was 15 runs short. In tight-spell-killing attacks, Russell's yorker-stuffed over and Anukul Roy were key on that track."

In a match for the ages during an IPL 2025 fixture on April 15, the Punjab Kings engineered one of the greatest upsets in tournament history by defending a record-low total of 111 against the perennially high-flying Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). It was not all about the play on the field, though. A strange pre-match incident relating to Sunil Narine's bat check turned viral and served to add another layer of drama to an already dramatic evening.

As the batsmen prepared to pursue Punjab's humble total, Sunil Narine found himself involved in a routine bat-check by the umpires. The whole scenario, which was caught on camera, involved the officials examining Narine's bat meticulously. Social media viewers promptly converted the incident into a meme session, facetiously captioning it "Sunil Narayan ki chori pakdi gayi"—implying in jest that he may have been attempting to hide a favorable bat.

While the bat was declared legal and Narine stepped into the field, what ensued was much more surprising. Pursuing only 112 runs, KKR began well and were sailing at 71/3. Rahmanullah Gurbaz is waiting for his turn in the first XI

Afghanistan's star opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz has recently been seen honing his spin bowling skills in the nets, drawing inspiration from none other than Sunil Narine. Observing Narine’s unique grip and bowling action closely, Gurbaz decided to experiment with his own version of spin, adding a new dimension to his cricketing skillset. Although yet to make his first appearance in IPL 2025 for the Kolkata Knight Riders, the young batter is making the most of his time in training sessions.

Gurbaz has been a part of the KKR setup since 2023. That season marked his best IPL performance so far, where he amassed 227 runs across 11 innings. However, the following year saw limited opportunities, with the Afghan opener getting to play just two innings and scoring 62 runs. Across his IPL journey with KKR, Gurbaz has accumulated 289 runs from 13 innings—a promising record that he’ll look to build upon in the current season.

The 25th match of IPL 2025 was played between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders. In this match, Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Chennai Super Kings by 8 wickets and registered their third win of this season. Apart from this, Sunil Narine played a brilliant innings of 44 runs with the help of two fours and five sixes in 18 balls. He was clean bowled by Noor Ahmed.

Apart from this, captain Rahane scored 20 runs in 17 balls and Rinku Singh scored 15 runs in 12 balls. In this way, Kolkata Knight Riders achieved the target in 10.1 overs. Shami served a timely yorker outside off-stump on the third delivery of the over. Narine, in an attempt to play for room, stepped back and attempted to cut the ball to the off-side.
