The Women’s Big Bash League 2025 continues with Match No. 11, where Sydney Thunder Women take on Sydney Sixers Women at the Drummoyne Oval in Sydney on Saturday, 15th November. The two teams also met recently in the T20 Spring Challenge, so they will be familiar with each other’s strengths going into this match.

The Sydney Thunder Women have had a tough start to their season. They failed to defend their totals in both games so far. They lost their opening match to the Hobart Hurricanes Women by six wickets and then faced another defeat against the Melbourne Renegades Women by four wickets. The Thunder will now be hoping to turn things around and get their first win of the season.

The Sydney Sixers Women began their campaign on a strong note with a huge 10-wicket win over the Perth Scorchers Women. However, they could not hold onto that momentum and lost their next game against the Hobart Hurricanes Women by six wickets with 19 balls remaining. The Sixers, therefore, will look to bounce back and move upwards into the points table with a better performance in this match.

ST-W vs SS-W: Pitch Report

The pitch at the Drummoyne Oval is known to be difficult for batting early in the innings. The new ball often causes problems, and scoring runs can be challenging. Because of the tricky bounce and early movement, captains may choose to bat first and put pressure on the chasing team. Bowlers are likely to enjoy the conditions, especially in the first half of the match.

Ravichandran Ashwin’s plans to make his debut in the overseas league have suffered a major blow as a knee injury has ruled him out of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2025-26 season. The veteran Indian off-spinner, who was set to represent Sydney Thunder, sustained the injury in Chennai and subsequently underwent knee surgery. As a result, Ashwin will not be able to participate in the upcoming edition of the Australian T20 league.

Ashwin was to have played the entire BBL 2025-26 season, which would have marked a historic moment as one of the few Indian cricketers to play in the league. His signing was regarded as a significant moment within the overseas competition of Indian players. His unfortunate injury has now meant he has withdrawn prior to the start of the season, disappointing fans and Sydney Thunder management alike.

The Sydney Thunder confirmed the news on their official channels, sending their best wishes to the Indian legend for a speedy recovery. “Sydney Thunder sends its best wishes to Ravichandran Ashwin as he recovers from surgery to his knee that has ruled him out of KFC BBL|15,” the club stated. The franchise also mentioned that Ashwin’s signing will continue to have a lasting impact across the Thunder Nation and that they are working with him on a revised schedule depending on his recovery progress.

Sydney Thunder and Ashwin React to the Unfortunate Setback

Sydney Thunder General Manager Trent Copeland expressed his disappointment, saying, “Everyone at Sydney Thunder was devastated to learn of Ash’s knee injury that has ruled him out of BBL|15, and we wish him well in his recovery. From the moment we first spoke with Ash, his commitment to Thunder was clear. We are hopeful of welcoming him into our dugout for part of BBL|15, introducing him to our fans at events and building a long-term relationship.”

Responding to the setback, Ravichandran Ashwin said, “I’m gutted to miss BBL|15. My focus now is recovery and coming back stronger. I’m grateful to the Thunder family and the fans for the warmth they’ve already shown me. Trent and the entire management made me feel part of the club from our very first conversation. If rehab and travel plans allow, I’d love to be around the group later in the season and meet the fans. Wishing both Thunder teams a big year.”

Former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin is set to be provided with private security as he heads to Australia for the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season. The Sydney Thunder have expressed concerns about the possibility of Ashwin being mobbed by enthusiastic Indian fans while in the city. To ensure his safety, the franchise is taking extra precautions ahead of his arrival.

Reports indicate that Ashwin will bring his personal crew to document his BBL journey with the Sydney Thunder for his YouTube channel. With a tremendous fan base that includes 5.3 million Instagram followers and 1.75 million YouTube subscribers, Ashwin is likely to attract considerable interest on and off the field. Security requirements have increased due to last year’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where about 5,000 Indian supporters gathered to watch India’s pink-ball practice session at Adelaide Oval, raising considerable safety concerns.

The Sydney Thunder aim to prevent a repeat of such situations during the BBL season. “The prospect of the veteran spinner training and playing in western Sydney has been flagged as a potential safety risk. The open nature of Cricket NSW’s facilities at Sydney Olympic Park means Indian fans could mob Ashwin at training,” the Sydney Morning Herald reported. In response, the Thunder have coordinated with Cricket Australia to ensure proper security measures are in place for an athlete of Ashwin’s popularity. “Ashwin may be given personal security during his time in Australia,” the report added.

Ashwin’s impact on BBL and fan engagement

Ashwin, 39, is expected to participate in three to five matches in January and will also feature in the finals if the Sydney Thunder qualify. His arrival is being hailed as the biggest signing in BBL history, sending a strong signal to fans, members, and sponsors. “It is the biggest signing in the history of the BBL. It is a really clear message to our fans and members and sponsors … that we are winning these moments. All eight clubs wanted this guy,” said Sydney Thunder general manager Copeland on Friday.

He added, “Ashwin has chosen us, which is a really cool story. Ashwin will be a great advocate for how great our tournament is and the Thunder environment.” With Ashwin’s dual role as a player and content creator, the Thunder hope to leverage his immense popularity to enhance the tournament’s visibility while ensuring a safe and secure experience for the cricketing star in Australia.

Legendary Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin went unsold in the ILT20 Season 4 auction. After retiring from the Indian Premier League in August, Ashwin wanted to try his luck in overseas leagues and registered for the ILT20 auction. He set his base price at USD 120,000 (around INR 1.06 crore), but no franchise owners placed a bid when his name came up.

Ashwin has had a fantastic IPL career, playing 221 matches across five franchises and becoming the seventh most-capped player in the league. He won the IPL twice with Chennai Super Kings in 2010 and 2011 and took 187 IPL wickets, which is the fifth highest in the tournament’s history. Overall, he has 317 wickets in 333 T20 games. In his last IPL auction, he was sold to Chennai Super Kings for a huge INR 9.75 crore.

Even though he went unsold in ILT20, Ashwin has already signed with Sydney Thunder for the Big Bash League (BBL) Season 15. He will be the first male player who has represented India to play in the BBL, making it a historic signing for the franchise.

Ashwin Joins Sydney Thunder for BBL|15

"Indian legend Ravichandran Ashwin has created history, joining Sydney Thunder for BBL|15. The Thunder Nation will welcome the biggest overseas signing since the League's inception, with Ashwin set to become the first male player to have represented India to join a BBL club," the team said in a release.

Ashwin will join the Thunder line-up in early January and will help the team try to reach back-to-back BBL finals, after they lost to Hobart Hurricanes last season. The veteran spinner is excited about his new journey and praised the team’s leadership for being clear about his role.

"Thunder was crystal clear about how they would use me and brave enough to back it. My conversations with the leadership were excellent, and we are fully aligned on my role. I love how David Warner (the Sydney Thunder captain) plays the game, and it is always better when your leader shares your mindset. I cannot wait to perform for the Thunder Nation," said Ashwin.

India’s former spin all-rounder, Ravichandran Ashwin, has signed with Sydney Thunder for the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) 2025-26, as it will be a landmark move to become the first capped India player in the event. The former Under-19 captain, Unmukt Chand, and former domestic player, Nikhil Chaudhary, had played the BBL in recent years.

Ashwin, who retired from the Indian Premier League a few weeks ago, has already signed up for next week’s ILT20 auction as the player with the highest base price. He will be committed to the league, which will take place between December 02 and January 04. That means that for the first three weeks of the BBL, he would remain unavailable and could join if the Thunder make it into the finals.

Ravichandran Ashwin to feature for Sydney Thunder in BBL 2025-26 season

Thunder’s last four games will be on January 06, 10, 12, and 16, while the spinner is likely to be available for three games unless his UAE franchise makes an early exit. He will be under the leadership of David Warner for Thunder and could face Steve Smith and Babar Azam, who will be playing for the Sixers.

“From the first time we spoke, Ashwin impressed everyone at the Thunder with his passion, desire to win, and understanding of what makes our club special. He will bring an injection of fresh energy and world-class bowling mid-tournament, while his presence as a leader and mentor will be invaluable for our young players.Trent Copeland, the general manager of the franchise, expressed.

Thunder already has Sam Billings, Lockie Ferguson, and Shadab Khan on the list. They have three local spinners in Chris Green, Tanveer Sangha, and Tom Andrews. Their home ground, Engie Stadium, is the most spin-friendly venue in the Big Bash League (BBL).

Not in one, but former India international Ravichandran Ashwin can feature in two overseas franchise leagues. After completing his stint in the ILT20, Ashwin can link up with Australia's T20 tournament, the Big Bash League (BBL).

According to several of the latest reports, the BBL franchise and the celebrated spinner are all set to feature with Sydney Thunder in BBL 2025. If he is able to play, then that will become a milestone for Big Bash, as Ashwin will be the most decorated Indian cricketer to ever play in the tournament. Because of international commitments and IPL contract clauses, most of the Indian players, especially international stars, are not eligible to take part in overseas T20 leagues. As Ashwin has retired from both international cricket and the Indian Premier League, he is now free to play other franchise tournaments across the world.

First, after his retirement from IPL, it was disclosed that the spinner's name is registered for the ILT20 draft. Ashwin himself revealed that he is willing to take part in the competition.

Sydney Thunder has already roped in multiple stars for the upcoming season. Lockie Ferguson, Shadab Khan, and Sam Billings are set to play for the team. Ashwin's inclusion will definitely strengthen their spin bowling department and all-rounder's department as well. Young Australian batting talent Sam Konstas has committed himself to the Sydney Thunder for the long term by signing a four-year contract extension that will see him in a Thunder shirt until the 2028–29 Big Bash League.

Konstas, 19 years old, has already been on a rollercoaster ride in international cricket. He averaged just 8.33 runs in three Test matches in the West Indies, but the young opener is set on bouncing back and being more consistent. To re-establish his rhythm and sharpen his focus, he has deleted Instagram from his phone to remove any distractions.

“I’m actually off Instagram now… It’s just not having that distraction. I am trying to give myself the best chance to perform at that level,” Konstas said. "I've had the support of all the senior players in the group, and in particular, Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, Usman Khawaja, and Mitchell Starc have been great in terms of support. Steve Smith has been good at sharing batting advice, and the way he shared with me how Pat Cummins reminded everyone about how important it was to balance and rest."

Konstas signs on with Thunder, from record debut to boyhood dream

Despite recent challenges, Konstas' talent and potential remain clear. He made an impact on his BBL debut last season when he slammed a 20-ball half-century, the quickest in Thunder history, which made him the competition's youngest to reach the milestone. Konstas was part of Australia's Under-19 World Cup-winning team and is viewed as a potential building block of the national team.

Konstas feels sentiment towards his contract as a Thunder supporter by nature. "I remember watching Davey Warner, Michael Hussey, and Andre Russell play for Thunder in the stands, so to now extend for another four years is very exciting to me," he said. "Batting with Davey last season was a massive, massive learning opportunity. Obviously, he’s very strategic, but he gave me clarity and freedom to just play my game. We've got an exciting group again this year, adding Shadab Khan. I feel like this is the year we’re going to dominate."

Trent Copeland, the General Manager of the Thunder, called the extension one of the easiest decisions of his career. "Sam continues to progress amazingly. From breaking records on debut to developing across formats, this deal showcases his growth, and we are excited to continue on this journey with him, as we believe he can be a Thunder player for life".

The overseas player draft for the 2025-26 seasons of the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) and Big Bash League (BBL) will be held on Thursday, June 19, ushering in a fresh season of top-class cricket in Australia. The WBBL draft starts at 4 PM AEST and is followed without a gap by the BBL draft. These drafts enable every one of the eight clubs in each of the competitions to choose from a large number of international players to complete their rosters.

How the Draft Operates

The draft is a formal four-round format.

  • Round 1: Platinum players only
  • Round 2: Platinum and Gold
  • Round 3: Gold and Silver (in reverse order)
  • Round 4: Silver and Bronze

Every team needs to pick at least two overseas players except for their pre-signed players. Clubs can miss only one round. Every team has already pre-signed one overseas player prior to the draft, and players have to be assigned to a round according to how much they are earning on their contracts. Clubs can also pick a fourth overseas player as a substitute.

Draft Order

Draft order was determined through a weighted lottery based on the standings of the prior season.

  • WBBL Round 1 Order: 1. Sydney Sixers, 2. Adelaide Strikers, 3. Melbourne Stars, 4. Perth Scorchers, 5. Hobart Hurricanes, 6. Sydney Thunder, 7. Melbourne Renegades, 8. Brisbane Heat.
  • BBL Round 1 Order: 1. Brisbane Heat, 2. Adelaide Strikers, 3. Melbourne Renegades, 4. Perth Scorchers, 5. Hobart Hurricanes, 6. Sydney Sixers, 7. Melbourne Stars, 8. Sydney Thunder.

There was a trade in the BBL draft, with the Thunder and Scorchers exchanging picks in the second and third rounds.

Pre-signed Players (Prior to Draft)

  • Adelaide Strikers: Laura Wolvaardt, Jamie Overton
  • Brisbane Heat: Nadine de Klerk, Colin Munro
  • Hobart Hurricanes: TBC, Chris Jordan
  • Melbourne Renegades: Hayley Matthews, Tim Seifert
  • Melbourne Stars: Marizanne Kapp, Tom Curran
  • Perth Scorchers: Sophie Devine, Finn Allen
  • Sydney Sixers: Amelia Kerr, Babar Azam
  • Sydney Thunder: Chamari Athapaththu, Sam Billings

Notable Overseas Nominees

More than 600 overseas players have thrown their names into the pool for the upcoming WBBL and BBL drafts, which promises to be a great mix of talent from around the globe. The BBL has some exciting names included in the nominations, including Pakistani superstars Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shadab Khan, Haris Rauf, and Mohammad Rizwan. England's T20 hitters include Jofra Archer, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, and Alex Hales. All of these big names are among the nominations for the BBL, along with New Zealand's Lockie Ferguson, Tim Southee, and Kane Williamson, who has declared himself available for three matches. Bangladesh's Mustafizur Rahman and West Indies speed demon Shamar Joseph round out the marquee BBL names.

For the WBBL, we have some Indian stars with award-winning resumes. Jemimah Rodrigues, Shikha Pandey, and Yastika Bhatia have all made nominations to the process. West Indies' Deandra Dottin and Pakistan's Fatima Sana also add some firepower to the draft. England has featured great players like Sophie Ecclestone, Heather Knight, Danni Wyatt, and Alice Capsey, while South Africa's Shabnim Ismail and Chloe Tryon help improve the quality of nominations.

Player Salaries

WBBL:

  • Platinum: $110,000
  • Gold: $90,000
  • Silver: $65,000
  • Bronze: up to $40,000

BBL:

  • Platinum: $360,000-$420,000
  • Gold: $300,000
  • Silver: $200,000
  • Bronze: up to $100,000

Retention and Replacement Rules

Each club can have a single retention pick, typically for players who played or signed for the team the season before. Replacement players will need to be selected from the draft pool unless sanctioned under exceptional circumstances.

Season Timeline and Scheduling Conflicts

  • WBBL: Late October to early December
  • BBL: Mid-December to late January

The BBL would face schedule conflicts with other competing leagues such as ILT20 (Dec 2 - Jan 4) and SA20 (Dec 26 - Jan 26). Yet, Cricket Australia still has hope that international stars could be free for the second part of the season and playoffs.

Although there were initial worries about the clash of T20 leagues causing overseas players to miss the BBL, Dobson was feeling positive about this season having better outcomes than in earlier years. He highlighted the fact that instead of a mass exodus at the later stages of the BBL, it's possible that some of the players playing in the ILT20 would be available for the back end of the tournament and finals. He added that this coincided with Australia’s Test stars’ availability, as no international matches are scheduled in January after the Ashes series.

"I think so," Dobson told ESPNcricinfo. "We probably pay more attention to our teams and players and who wants to come and play in the Big Bash. And we're hearing from players that they still love coming to the BBL. It's a bucket list for many of them. We're always looking at windows and player availability, but ultimately, I think our job is to make sure our comp is as appealing as it can be."

The 2025 drafts promise high drama and strategic decisions as clubs shape their overseas core. With global superstars up for grabs and new scheduling dynamics in play, this draft season is shaping up to be one of the most competitive yet.
