Sunrisers Eastern Cape, two successive winners of the SA20, ended as the runners-up of the tournament as they lost the final against MI Cape Town at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. They finished the group stage of the points table at the third position with the help of five victories in 10 encounters at a net run rate of -0.720. It wasn’t a great start to the campaign with three consecutive defeats.

Sunrisers came to the auction of the SA20 for the 2025/26 edition with the joint second-most purse of R21.5 million with the requirement of filling 14 slots, including four overseas and two Under-23 players. The first player of the auction for the Sunrisers came in the form of the former wicket-keeper opening batter, Quinton de Kock, for R2.40 million, as the Durban Super Giants didn’t use their RTM card.

SEC’s coup for bagging the expressive Protea pacer, Anrich Nortje, came at R5 million to join the forces with the left-arm pacer, Marco Jansen, in the attack. They had filled their 19 spots before getting James Coles, Chris Wood, Lewis Gregory, and JP King in the accelerated round.

Matthew Breetzke, who has already earned so much success for the Rainbow Nation with successive half-centuries in the 50-over format, went to the Sunrisers Eastern Cape for R6.1 million after an intense bidding war with the Pretoria Capitals and Durban Super Giants.

At the end of the auction, their assistant coach, Russell Domingo, announced Tristan Stubbs as their new leader, having lost Aiden Markram in the process.I did get the clearance from the owners and from Adi to announce that Tristan Stubbs will be leading the Sunrisers going forward. He's a local boy, I think he loves nothing more than playing for the Sunrisers and for the Warriors back in Port Elizabeth.

<![CDATA[Three players who can replace Axar Patel as DC captain ahead of IPL 2026]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-stats/three-players-who-can-replace-axar-patel-as-dc-captain-ahead-of-ipl-2026/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-stats/three-players-who-can-replace-axar-patel-as-dc-captain-ahead-of-ipl-2026/ Sun, 31 Aug 2025 11:44:54 GMT

The internet has been buzzing with the news of Axar Patel, who is likely to be sacked as the captain of the Delhi Capitals (DC) ahead of the IPL 2026 season. Although the franchise has shown signs of retaining the spin bowling all-rounder, the possibility of him continuing as the DC skipper appears slim.

In such a scenario, the Delhi-based outfit may be compelled to explore alternative captaincy options in the form of Faf du Plessis, KL Rahul, and Tristan Stubbs. In this article, we will look at the top three captaincy candidates who are likely to fill Axar's shoes ahead of the next IPL season.

Faf du Plessis

The veteran Proteas batter has a wealth of experience in competing in various franchise leagues around the world. In addition, the 41-year-old has led several notable franchises to success. He was appointed as RCB's skipper in 2022 and captained them for two years before stepping down. Under him, the Bangalore-based outfit made it to the 2024 playoffs. Elsewhere outside the IPL, Faf also endured a successful stint in the CPL by taking St Lucia Kings to their maiden CPL title win in 2024. Apart from CPL, the South African veteran also experienced a stellar run in MLC 2025. Leading the Texas Super Kings, Faf powdered the opposition with multiple centuries and took his side to a commanding position in the league.

Add to that, the South African southpaw has also captained the Proteas at the international level, leading his side in all three formats. Earlier in the IPL 2024 season, Faf served as a deputy to Axar. Faf's experience will be quite invaluable, and being the vice-captain of the team, he looks like the strongest contender to become the next captain of the Delhi Capitals ahead of the upcoming IPL season.

KL Rahul

Indian all-format specialist batter KL Rahul is another formidable cricketing personality who can take over the captaincy baton from Axar ahead of the 19th IPL edition. Rahul is blessed with some strong captaincy credentials at his disposal. The Bangalore-based batter has so far captained two IPL franchises to this day—PBKS & LSG. His captaincy journey in the IPL began in 2020 with PBKS. Though PBKS struggled to make it to the top four, Rahul did not allow the burden of captaincy to affect his natural game. He finished the 2020 season as the highest run scorer with 670 runs to his name and slammed his best score of 132*, which was, at that time, the highest by an Indian in the IPL.

Then, in 2022, he switched his allegiance to LSG. Although he was ruled out midway through the 2023 season, Rahul was able to make a comeback a year later. However, LSG failed to deliver a promising performance under his leadership and crashed out prematurely from IPL 2024. Sanjiv Goenka, the owner of LSG, was visibly vexed to see the results, and Rahul was eventually sidelined from the squad ahead of IPL 2025. Although at first, Rahul declined to take over DC's captaincy ahead of the 2025 season, experts suggest he could change his mind as the next season looms large.

Tristan Stubbs

Tristan Stubbs, unlike his earlier predecessors, has age on his side. The South African batting all-rounder is currently in the midst of navigating the early phase of his IPL career. Although Stubbs has no credible captaincy experience under his belt, he is well known for being a key performer and a highly versatile player. Moreover, the Delhi Capitals assistant coach even went as far as describing him as a “player for the next five years”, thereby underscoring his growing importance to the team. His adaptability, backing himself in high-pressure moments, and tactical awareness have drawn praise, though always as a player and not as a leader.

At age 25, and with growing visibility, leadership opportunities might not be far off if he continues on this trajectory. The combination of explosive batting, athleticism, and significant on-field contributions that he consistently showcases during crucial moments of a match may entice the DC management to move away from seasoned players and invest in the promising young all-rounder.

South Africa recorded their fifth successive ODI bilateral series win against Australia, after winning the second game of the three-match ODI series in Australia by 84 runs.

Visitors South Africa were already leading the ODI series by 1-0 before the second ODI at Mackay after winning the series opener by 98 runs. While captain Temba Bavuma was rested for the second ODI, Aiden Markram led the Proteas side in the second game, where the visitors chose to bat first. After South Africa were all out for 277 runs in 49.1 overs, they bowled out the hosts for 193 runs in 37.4 overs.

Matthew Breetzke and Tristan Stubbs guided the team to a strong total with solid knocks

Both the South African openers, Ryan Rickelton (8) and skipper Aiden Markram (0), were dismissed in the single-digit scores. However, the next three Proteas batters controlled the innings strongly. While Tony de Zorzi scored 38 off 39 balls (five fours), he had a 67-run partnership with Matthew Breetzke for the third wicket.

Then Breetzke and Tristan Stubbs had an 89-run partnership for the fourth wicket. While Breetzke smashed 88 off 78 balls with 10 fours and two sixes, Stubbs scored 74 off 87 balls (three fours and one six) before getting out in the 44th over.

Wiaan Mulder (26) and Keshav Maharaj (22) played two crucial cameos in the innings, which helped the Proteas to set a challenging total.

Among the Australian bowlers, Adam Zampa (3/63) picked up three wickets, while Xavier Bartlett (2/45), Nathan Ellis (2/46), and Marnus Labuschagne (2/19) bagged two wickets each. Also, the pacer Josh Hazlewood (1/57) took one wicket.

Lungi Ngidi claimed five-wicket haul

In reply, Australia got a poor start and never managed to come up to the challenging position. At the end of the first powerplay, the hosts scored 39/3 in 10 overs. Only Cameron Green and Josh Inglis produced some fightback, as they were the only batters to reach the 20-run mark in that innings. Green scored 35 off 54 balls (three fours), while Inglis scored 87 off 74 balls with 10 fours and two sixes. They had a 67-run partnership for the fourth wicket, but once their partnership was broken, the hosts couldn’t handle the late pressure.

South African fast bowler Lungi Ngidi recorded his second ODI fifer with the bowling figures of 8.4-1-42-5. Also, Nandre Burger (2/23) and Senuran Muthusamy (2/30) both picked up two wickets each.

Experience hit at the crucial moment, a dream delivery from Mitchell Starc. Tristan Stubbs had no clue how to deal with the delivery.

When the situation looked all settled for South Africa to win their first-ever World Test Championship (WTC) title, Starc struck. Credit also goes to Captain Pat Cummins for utilizing the experienced pacer during such a pressure situation.

After playing over forty deliveries, Stubbs was not looking comfortable on the wicket and tried to go aggressive multiple times but failed to execute. Before being bowled out against Mitchell Starc, Stubbs lived dangerously against Nathan Lyon and then Starc before the wicket-taking delivery. The 35-year-old pacer tried to put extra force on the weak link of the batting pair, which was Stubbs.

A cutter, went in to shattered the wickets

Strac tried to use the bounce from the pitch and the angle through his runner-up. Stubbs escaped a catch behind the wicket by a narrow margin against the same bowler, but his fortune faded away during the 3rd delivery of the 71st over.

This time, the speed star used a scrabble seam delivery on the up, swung in to expose the batter's defense, and brushed the top of the timbers. The bails, red lights on, spinning out from the wickets. After facing 43 deliveries, Tristan Stubbs departed for only 8 runs. Australia got the wicket when South Africa was on 241.

Lord's, London, June 11, 2025 – Josh Hazlewood provided a moment of sparkle at 20.2 overs, sending back Tristan Stubbs for 2 and deepening South Africa’s woes in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2025. Having South Africa's bowlers, spearheaded by Kagiso Rabada's 5/51, dismiss Australia for 212, their batting faltered against a fiery Australian pace attack. Hazlewood's jaffa—a 136 kmph good-length ball outside off that curved back sharply—snuck through Stubbs' defense, breaking his stumps as the batter played from the crease and couldn't recover to the inward movement.

South Africa's innings started on a wobbly note, with Mitchell Starc getting rid of Aiden Markram for a duck in the first over and Ryan Rickelton for 16, caught at slip. Pat Cummins joined the attack, sending Wiaan Mulder back for 6, leaving the Proteas 25/3 prior to Hazlewood's delivery. Stubbs, who was supposed to steady the middle order, scored only 2 from 13 balls, going to Hazlewood's unrelenting accuracy. The Australian pacers took advantage of the seaming Lord's surface, with South Africa's batting group finding it difficult to support their bowlers' initial superiority.

Hazlewood's triumph mirrored Australia's resurgence, and they felt a chance to seize control. South Africa, on 30/4, looked up to captain Temba Bavuma and David Bedingham to arrest the collapse. Australia's bowlers, having given away only 43 runs from 22 overs, demonstrated their champion pedigree, subjecting the Proteas to extreme pressure on a track producing consistent movement.

Australia Tighten Grip

David Bedingham pushed back at the end of the day with successive boundaries off Cummins, remaining unbeaten on 8, with Bavuma still on 3. South Africa's collapse at the top, however, left them exposed to the Australian pacers on a thrilling Day 1.

The Proteas are in need of a steely partnership on Day 2 to undo Australia's bowling prowess. With the pitch still favoring the seamers, South Africa has an uphill task to bridge the 169-run gap.

Current Score: South Africa 43/4 (22 overs)—David Bedingham 8*, Temba Bavuma 3*; Josh Hazlewood 1/10, Mitchell Starc 2/10.

Delhi Capitals announced that vice-captain Faf du Plessis and South African batter Tristan Stubbs will return to the team following the mid-season hiatus for IPL 2025. The team, which is co-owned by GMR and JSW, announced du Plessis and Stubbs' return on Saturday, which was just in time for their match on Sunday against Gujarat Titans at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Their return is a much-needed boost for Delhi and will add significant depth to the squad with their championship experience and big hitting, since the team is currently in fifth place with 13 points from 11 matches and is in a tightly contested race to make the playoffs.
Thus far in the tournament, DC has known all too well that they can not afford many more losses in their remaining three matches.

In the official release from the franchise, it was stated that they also suffered some setbacks as they will not have Mitchell Starc and Donovan Ferreira for the remainder of the tournament, and they acknowledge that they "completely respect their decision and wish them all the best and every success for the future."

Fraser-McGurk's Departure, Mustafizur's Return

Joining the mid-season departures, Jake Fraser-McGurk, one of the top performers of IPL 2024, will not be returning to India because of personal issues. Fraser-McGurk had won fans' hearts with scorching knocks, including a record-breaking 15-ball half-century, and his absence will surely be felt.

In support of the bowling unit in reply, Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman has been acquired as a replacement. Having played for Delhi Capitals in 2022 and 2023, Mustafizur offers familiarity as well as experience in swing bowling. In 57 matches in the IPL, he has claimed 61 wickets at an economy of 8.14, with 8 wickets in 8 matches in IPL 2022.

With the game on and team switchovers confirmed, Delhi Capitals are readying for a pivotal battle for a playoff spot in what could be a thrilling conclusion to IPL 2025.

It was a night to remember at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on April 16, as the Delhi Capitals edged past the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in a high-voltage IPL 2025 clash. The match had everything—an electric Delhi crowd, nail-biting final overs, missed opportunities, and a gripping Super Over finish. With this dramatic win, DC not only secured two points but also climbed to the top of the points table. More than just a win, it felt like a statement of intent from the Capitals.

Both teams finished their 20 overs with identical scores of 188. Delhi recovered from early setbacks, thanks to explosive knocks by Tristan Stubbs (34* off 18) and Axar Patel (34 off 14), to post 188/5. Rajasthan Royals looked poised to chase it down, riding on strong performances from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Nitish Rana. But needing just 9 runs in the final over, they were stopped in their tracks by Mitchell Starc, who delivered a masterclass in death bowling. His pinpoint yorkers and the last-ball run-out of Dhruv Jurel pushed the game into a thrilling Super Over, where Delhi held their nerve to seal a memorable victory.

Stubbs Shines, Starc Stuns in Super Over Win

The final over in regulation and the Super Over belonged to two men – Tristan Stubbs and Mitchell Starc. Stubbs was electric at the death, slamming 34* in 18 balls, and finishing it in the Super Over with a crunching six. He had earlier been dropped on 12 by Riyan Parag – a moment that came back to haunt RR. Mitchell Starc, despite being taken apart early by Jaiswal (4, 6, 4 in his first over), bounced back to deliver a masterclass in death bowling. His final over figures of 1-8 under pressure took the game into a Super Over, where he again stood tall.

Other Notable Moments

 • Jaiswal's explosive start: 51 off 27 and hammering Starc early set the tone for RR.
 • Sanju Samson retires hurt: Looked in fine touch before a suspected side strain forced him off at 61/0.
 • Stubbs' game-changing throw: In the 20th over, he ran from wide long-on to stop a certain two, keeping RR to a single, crucial in the context of the tie.
 • Sandeep’s meltdown: After a brilliant spell (3-0-14-0), he bowled 4 wides and a no-ball in the 20th, conceding 19 runs.

DC are on Top of IPL 2025 Points Table

This win was DC’s fifth in six matches, taking them to the top of the IPL 2025 points table. They held their nerve in a game where both teams had multiple chances to close it out. Munaf Patel, DC’s bowling coach, was also in the spotlight – fined 25% of his match fee for a code-of-conduct breach after getting into a heated exchange with match officials during the final moments.

But on a night where fortunes flipped with every over, Delhi emerged victorious, thanks to cool heads and bold hearts. One Super Over. Countless twists. IPL 2025 just delivered another unforgettable classic.

The 32nd match of IPL 2025 was played between Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals at Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in Delhi. There was a super over in this match and Delhi Capitals defeated Rajasthan Royals in the super over. This was the first super over of IPL 2025. In this match, Delhi Capitals had to score 12 runs to win in the super over. KL Rahul and Stubbs came to bat. KL Rahul scored seven runs in three balls and Stubbs hit a six off one ball to give the team victory.

In this match, the team of Delhi Capitals was batting first. The start of the team of Delhi Capitals was once again bad and Jack Fraser McGurk was out on the ball of Jofra Archer after scoring 9 runs in 6 balls. After that Karun Nair, who played a brilliant innings in the last match, returned to the pavilion after being run out without opening the account. But after that Abhishek Porel and KL Rahul took over the innings. Abhishek Porel scored 49 runs in 37 balls and KL Rahul scored 38 runs in 32 balls. After that Tristan Stubbs scored 34 runs in 18 balls and Axar Patel scored 34 runs in 14 balls to take the team to 188 runs for the loss of five wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. For the Royals team, Jofra Archer took two wickets for 32 runs in four overs. Apart from this, Mahesh Teekshna and Hasaranga got one wicket each.

After this, when Rajasthan Royals came out to chase the target of 189 runs given by Delhi Capitals, they could only score a total of 188 runs for the loss of four wickets in 20 overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 51 and Nitish Rana scored 51 runs for the team, while Dhruv Jurel remained unbeaten on 26 and Shimron Hetmyer on 15*.

Delhi Capitals Hold Their Nerve to Win First Super Over of IPL 2025

Talking about the last 6 balls, Hetmyer took only 1 run on the first ball of Starc. After this Jurel came on strike and Jurel could also score only 1 run. Starc was constantly bowling the ball at yorker length, due to which the batsmen were having difficulty in playing big shots. Hetmyer took 2 runs on the third ball. On the fourth ball, he again took two runs. He was trying to hit boundaries again and again. But he was not able to succeed. Now 3 runs were to be scored on two balls. Hetmyer scored 1 run on the 5th ball and then Starc got Jurel run out on the last ball. In such a situation, the score between the two teams reached a tie and the match went into the super over.

Finally the match reached the super over and Rajasthan, batting first, scored 11 runs after losing 2 wickets. In response, KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs gave victory on 4 balls. Stubbs hit a six and gave the team victory.

The Arun Jaitley Stadium saw a dramatic moment during the 29th match of IPL 2025 as the Mumbai Indians traveled to play the Delhi Capitals in a tight fight. Delhi chose to bowl and Mumbai openers started aggressively, being headed by Ryan Rickelton's 41 from 25 deliveries. The South African left-handed batsman played the ball sweetly, setting the pace early on, before being foxed by a traditional Kuldeep Yadav googly.

As the innings went on, Mumbai appeared to be in command. Tilak Varma, who walked in after the loss of a few wickets, stole the initiative with a positive mindset. He attacked the DC bowlers and started to pick up steam when the turning point of the innings almost came in the 13th over.

Costly Confusion in the Outfield

Vipraj Nigam, the left-arm bowler, floated one away outside off to Varma, who tried to slog it out over long-on. What ought to have been a routine catch was turned into a comic-tragic situation. Tristan Stubbs and Jake Fraser-McGurk were rushing in towards the ball, Stubbs from long-on and McGurk coming from deep midwicket. The South African slowed down because he was nervous about colliding with his Aussie mate mid-pitch. That moment’s delay left him mispositioned, and despite stretching for the catch, he spilled it. To make matters worse, the ball trickled over the ropes for four, rubbing salt into Delhi’s wounds. While DC’s fielding faltered, their spin duo held firm. Kuldeep Yadav was impressive again, dismissing both Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav (40 off 28), while Nigam accounted for key wickets of former skipper Rohit Sharma and current skipper Hardik Pandya.

Even with their batting depth, MI are struggling in IPL 2025. With just one win from five matches and being ninth in the table, each match is a do-or-die encounter. DC, by contrast, have four wins and are as close to unbeaten as anyone can possibly be and look like a serious title contender.

Stubbs' missed chance may not hurt DC on the scoreboard today, but these moments tend to swing momentum in T20 cricket, and Delhi will hope it does not come back to bite them.

Indian Premier League (IPL) has often had this tradition of building great camaraderie between players of various nationalities. One such incident was also witnessed in the Delhi Capitals (DC) camp, where Faf du Plessis and Tristan Stubbs, along with Jake Fraser-McGurk, recently displayed their dancing skills. Together with the DC team, the three are now in Chennai, getting ready for their forthcoming IPL 2025 matchup with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
