UP T20 league hit by match-fixing scare bookie caught over ₹1 crore bribe attempt

The UP T20 League has been shaken by a match-fixing scare just ahead of the final on September 6. Lucknow police registered an FIR after the BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) flagged a suspicious approach made to one of the participating teams.

On August 31, Kashi Rudra team manager Arjun Chauhan received an Instagram message from a user with the ID ‘vipss_nakrani.’ After claiming he was a big bookie, the sender was offering ₹1 crore to fix matches, with an added personal commission of ₹50 lakh. Rather than take up the offer, Chauhan immediately notified the ACU.

The ACU moved quickly to keep the communication ongoing to trap the perpetrator. During the conversation, the perpetrator gave his WhatsApp number, promised immediate cash payments or US dollars, and even said he or someone from his crew would be at the ground to pay the players immediately following the matches. All chats and calls were recorded and presented to police as evidence.

Lucknow Police Register FIR Following ACU Complaint

DCP Nipun Agarwal confirmed that a case has been filed under multiple legal provisions, including cheating, illegal betting, and cybercrime. “We have registered a case against the unidentified suspect and his associates under BNS sections 318 (cheating), 319 (cheating by personation), 112 (penalizing organized crime), 62 (attempting to commit offenses), section 3 of the Public Gambling Act, 1867, and Section 66D of the IT Act,” he said.

Officials noted that the suspect may not be working alone and could be linked to bookies who previously tried to target other teams during the tournament. The Cyber Crime Cell is now tracing his IP address and online contacts. With the UP T20 League ongoing since August 17 in Lucknow, the authorities have now placed the tournament under strict scrutiny to avoid a second incident.

The left-handed middle order batter of the Indian side, Rinku Singh, who prepares for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, starting on September 09 in Abu Dhabi, has revealed the story of why borrowed the bat from Virat Kohli, the former Indian Test and T20I batter, during the days in the Indian Premier League (IPL) when Kolkata Knight Riders faced the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

Rinku looked back at the story when he played an event with Virat Kohli, and that was when he got the bat from the Delhi-born. Later, he asked the veteran to give another one after breaking the old one in the nets. The cameraman chased him as the video went viral.

“We played a tournament together with Virat Kohli. So, I wasn’t very familiar with him back then. But when the IPL came, I asked him for a bat. So, I played the first game and continued with it in the second during the tournament. But it got broken during the net practice. So when I went to Virat bhaiya to ask for the bat, the cameraman came chasing me.” Rinku Singh expressed in a viral video.

Rinku has smashed over 546 runs in 24 T20I innings at an average of 42 and a strike rate of 161.06 with the help of three half-centuries at the best score of unbeaten 69 runs. During the UPT20 league, the southpaw clubbed 372 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of around 180.

Rinku also recalled the story of how he got a new bat from Rohit Sharma, when the latter gifted a special bat to Angkrish Raghuvanshi, the KKR batter. That was when he got another bat.

“That’s how the video went viral. The same story happened with Rohit bhaiya. He was sitting in the dug-out, and I was talking to Tilak Verma. So he came and gave the bat to Angkrish Raghuvanshi, which was already prepared. So I was a little shy of asking, but they let it go. Then he gave me the bat, and that video also went viral. It feels good to use the superstar’s bat.” Rinku Singh revealed in the same video.

The Uttar Pradesh T20 League, from their official social media platforms, shared a specially edited short video describing Rinku Singh's recent form in the tournament. The video on social media platforms was shared before the Kashi Rudras vs. Meerut Mavericks playoff match of the ongoing UP T20 League 2025.

Rinku Singh has been in superb form in this year's UP T20 League. Currently, he is among the leading run scorers of the contest by scoring 332 runs after playing 10 matches for Meerut Mavericks at a batting average of 66.40. If we talk about the individual highest scores, then Rinku is in the second spot for his unbeaten 108-run innings after Adarsh Singh, who played an unbeaten 113-run knock. And in terms of batting average, Singh is leading the race, as he already fetched an average of 66.40 in 10 matches.

The middle-order batter got back to his usual form after claiming a spot in the Asia Cup 2025 squad, which is scheduled to start on September 9, 2025. As of now, the Uttar Pradesh native has smashed 22 over boundaries. Notably, he is the skipper of Meerut Mavericks. In their previous encounter with Kashi Rudras, Rinku played a captain's knock to ensure a vital win. During the 27th match of the tournament, against Kashi, he scored 78 not out against 48 balls with 6 boundaries and 6 over boundaries.

Rinku wants to play Test for India

In a recent interview, Rinku revealed his dream. The big hitter, who established himself as a skilled T20 cricketer for the franchise and for Team India as well, wants to represent the Men in Blue in ODI and Test formats as well. Representing India in the Whites is a dream of Rinku, which is yet to be cherished. He does not want to position himself only as a Twenty20 batter.

"I know fans love it when I hit sixes & I’m really grateful for that, but my Ranji Trophy average is also very good; I average over 55 there. I really enjoy playing red-ball cricket. I’ve also played two ODIs for India and did well in one of them. So, it’s not like I’m only a T20 player. I believe I can perform in every format if I get the chance," Rinku Singh said.

Rinku Singh found his natural run-scoring knack ahead of the Asia Cup 2025 through the ongoing Uttar Pradesh T20 League with Meerut Mavericks. In this tournament, the swashbuckling batter has played multiple blistering innings, including a mind-blowing century. Rinku started to make headlines from the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) because of his hard-hitting abilities.

After playing multiple match-winning knocks for KKR, the UP-born got the chance to represent India in T20Is. After making the T20I debut in 2023, the batter has already played 33 Twenty20 Internationals. As of now, cricket fans marked Rinku as a T20 format batsman. Though the 27-year-old himself has a slightly different aim, a broader aim. During a recent interview, Rinku revealed that he does not want to limit himself as a one-format cricketer. Mentioning his domestic cricket stats, Singh revealed that he wants to represent India in Test cricket as well.

He continued, "I don’t like being tagged as a one-format player; I see myself as an all-format player. My dream is to play Test cricket for India, & if I get the opportunity, I’ll be ready to grab it."

Notably, he was the leading run-scorer for Uttar Pradesh in the group stage of the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy, with 803 runs in nine matches. He finished the tournament with 953 runs in ten matches. In first-class cricket, the right-handed batter accumulated a total of 3,336 runs at an average of 54.68 in 50 games.

After Sanju Samson, another Team India batter, Rinku Singh, is in fiery form ahead of the Asia Cup 2025. On match number 27 of the ongoing Uttar Pradesh T20 League between Kashi Rudras and Meerut Mavericks.

Meerut skipper Rinku Singh played a blistering 78-run innings off 48 balls to ensure his team's victory with six boundaries and 6 over boundaries. With that win, Mavericks secured their 5th win of their campaign after playing 9 matches and claimed the second spot of the points table. Their authoritative victory came against the table topper Kashi Rudras. Rinku displayed his stunning form while chasing a target of 136 runs in the second innings. Meerut got their much-needed victory with 7 wickets in hand and 26 balls to spare.

In the 16th over of the second innings, the middle-order batter smacked three sixes and a four in the first four balls of the over and concluded the match in style. The innings is proof of Rinku's matured mind as well. When he came to the crease, he did not try to do anything in a hurry. Took his time, and then delivered.

The hundred-plus-run partnership between Rinku and Madhav proved decisive for the rivalry. During the initial stage of the second innings, Meerut Mavericks was in an unstable situation, losing 3 top-order batters for only 26 runs.

Kanpur Superstars had a terrible start after being asked to bat. Superstars top order collapsed early, losing three wickets in the powerplay. Captain Sameer Rizvi scored some crucial quick 51 runs in 33 balls, hitting four sixes, but he did not get much support from the team . Shubham Mishra and Vineet Panwar added some quick runs, but Kanpur was all-out for just 114 runs in 18.4 overs. For Noida, Naman Tiwari was the star with 4 wickets, while Kunal Tyagi took 3 wickets giving away only 13 runs.

Chasing the small target, Noida started well and never went to trouble. Anivesh Choudhary scored 32 runs in 24 balls and Ravi Singh played a quickfire knock of 23 runs from 11 balls. Meerut Mavericks batted first and scored 190/5 in 20 overs. Swastik Chikara made 42 runs from 35 balls, and Madhav Kaushik supported with 32. The real game-changer for the game was Ritik Vats, who scored 44 runs in just 15 balls with five sixes. Divyansh Rajput scored quick fire knock of 21 runs in 8 balls, helping his team post a good total.

In reply, Gorakhpur Lions started confidently. Kushwah led from the front, hitting 12 fours and 3 sixes in his 92 from 61 balls. Captain Akshdeep Nath played an important knock of 44 runs in 29 balls. Kartik Tyagi picked two crucial wickets for Meerut, Gorakhpur stayed calm and kept the chase easy. In the final overs, Siddharth Yadav scored 14 runs in just 5 balls to finish the game in style. In reply, Noida Super Kings struggled early as they kept losing wickets. Shivam Mavi turned the game with the ball too, taking 4 wickets and breaking the top order. At one stage, Noida looked out of the game at 62/5, but skipper Prashant Veer fought back with a brilliant 52 not out from 30 balls. Karn Sharma also played a quick knock of 34 from just 18 balls, hitting some all-around shots to keep the chase alive.

In reply, Kanpur Superstars were in complete control. Their batsmen played calmly, kept the scoreboard moving and never allowed the bowlers to sit in the strong position. Boundaries came at regular times and partnerships kept building, which made the chase look easy. The key player was Sameer Rizvi,he scored 76 runs in 32 balls. The Falcons bowlers tried different ways to stop the flow of the runs.
