Sri Lanka has faced a major injury blow in their campaign of the T20 World Cup 2026 as their star all-rounder, Wanindu Hasaranga, has been ruled out of the competition with a hamstring injury that he suffered during the opening game against Ireland at the R. Premadasa Cricket Stadium in Colombo a couple of days ago. Sri Lanka earned a fine victory in that fixture.

Although Wanindu Hasaranga completed his spell, with figures of 3/25 in four overs to go through the middle order of the opposition in the chase of 164, he had an MRI scan after the match day, and that revealed a serious tear in his hamstring. The report was seen by a specialist in the United Kingdom before he was ruled out on February 10.

The reports have claimed that the new injury is related to the previous hamstring injury that he had. However, it’s not a recurrence exactly, as he battled it for several years now, including a foot complaint. He bowled the three overs with the injury, using the short run-up of a few steps against Ireland.

Sri Lanka to Get Approval for Dushan Hemantha in T20 WC 2026

Sri Lanka are expected to receive official clearance from the International Cricket Council as part of the ICC approval process to confirm Dushan Hemantha as the replacement for Wanindu Hasaranga in the T20 World Cup 2026 squad. Hasaranga’s absence has prompted the selectors to act swiftly, with Hemantha emerging as a like-for-like option in the team.

The leg-spin all-rounder brings a similar skill set, strengthening Sri Lanka’s squad depth at a crucial stage of the tournament. The 31-year-old has featured in three T20Is so far, picking up four wickets at an economy rate of 7.85, while also contributing with the bat when required.

Given the lack of specialist spin options available, Sri Lanka may consider slotting Hemantha straight into the playing XI for their upcoming match. His inclusion fits the broader spin-bowling replacement narrative, with team management looking to maintain balance despite losing their most influential T20 bowler.

Across 66 T20 matches, the Colombo-born all-rounder has scored 895 runs at a strike rate of 120.94 and claimed 82 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 6.60, highlighting his effectiveness in both departments.

Hasaranga’s loss remains a significant blow for Sri Lanka. He is the country’s leading wicket-taker in the format and has enjoyed notable success in T20 World Cups, claiming 40 wickets at an economy rate of 6.01 in 20 innings. Sri Lanka will next face Oman on February 12 in Kandy, with the squad adjustment expected to be finalised before that fixture.

Sri Lanka is playing Ireland in the sixth match of the ICC World Cup today at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Sri Lanka was once a team that achieved great success in the ICC T20 World Cup. From 2009 to 2014, they reached the semi-finals four times in a row, but they have not made it to the knockouts since then. This time, they are co-hosts, but that won't prove to be a major advantage. Sri Lanka's last series ended in a 3-0 loss to England.

On the other hand, Ireland entered this tournament with momentum, having won their previous two T20 series. Their confidence is extremely high. So far, both teams have played four T20 matches, and Sri Lanka has won all of them.

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 will be held in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8. This will be the 10th edition of the tournament. A total of 55 matches will be played across eight venues, with five in India and three in Sri Lanka.

India, one of the co-hosts, are also the defending champions of the T20 World Cup. They won the 2024 edition held in the United States and the West Indies after beating South Africa in a thrilling final in Barbados. Team India had earlier won the first T20 World Cup in 2007 in South Africa.

West Indies and England are the only other teams to win the T20 World Cup twice. West Indies lifted the trophy in 2012 and 2016, while England won in 2010 and 2022. Over the years, several bowlers from different teams have delivered impressive performances in the Men’s T20 World Cup. In this feature, we take a look at the top wicket-takers in the ICC tournament.

5. Rashid Khan (37 wickets)

Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan is fifth on the list of bowlers with the most wickets in the T20 World Cup. In 23 matches, he has taken 37 wickets at an average of 14.89 and an economy rate of 6.30. He has taken three four-wicket hauls.

Rashid’s best figures of 4-9 came against Scotland in Sharjah in 2021. He also took 4-17 against New Zealand in Guyana in 2024, helping Afghanistan win by 84 runs. In the same edition, he claimed 4-23 against Bangladesh in Kingstown, as Afghanistan won by eight runs under the DLS method.

4. Wanindu Hasaranga (37 wickets)

Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has also taken 37 wickets in the T20 World Cup. He is placed above Rashid Khan because he played fewer matches. In 19 matches, he took 37 wickets at an average of 11.72 and an economy rate of 6.00.

His best figures of 3-8 came against the UAE in Geelong in 2022. He also took 3-28 against the Netherlands at the same venue. Hasaranga claimed 3-13 against Afghanistan in Brisbane. He picked up 16 wickets in 2021 and 15 wickets in 2022.

3. Lasith Malinga (38 wickets)

Former Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga is third on the list. He led Sri Lanka to the 2014 T20 World Cup title. In 31 matches, he took 38 wickets at an average of 20.07 and an economy rate of 7.43.

Malinga’s best figures of 5-31 came against England in Pallekele in 2012. He was named Player of the Match as Sri Lanka won by 19 runs. He also took 3-17 against Pakistan in 2009 and 3-28 against West Indies in 2010.

The 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Subcontinental tracks are expected to be the tactical bowlers' dream. Even though India is still expanding beyond batting, the masters of the white ball will eventually choose who wins the 2026 trophy.

These 5 bowlers have the skills they need to do well in a T20I era when scores often go above 200 runs.

1. Varun Chakaravarthy (India)

Varun Chakaravarthy

The "Mystery Spinner" made the most spectacular return in modern cricket history. Varun Chakaravarthy, India's best tactical weapon, will be the ICC's best T20I bowler at the 2026 World Cup. He had a great year in 2025, when he beat South Africa and England. Now, his ability to deliver leg-breaks and googlies from almost the same seam positions makes him almost impossible to read.

Varun Chakaravarthy is known for his great control during the powerplay overs, when he has consistently stopped the other team's openers with his variations. His economy rate of less than 7 runs per over in high-scoring games shows that he can keep most aggressive batting lineups from scoring big scores. His partnership with his duo spinner Kuldeep Yadav in the middle overs is now India's strongest weapon, constructing a spin web that won't be easy for any team out there to tackle.

2. Rashid Khan (Afghanistan)

Rashid Khan

No "watch out" list would be complete without the Afghan wizard. Rashid Khan enters 2026 as probably the most successful T20I bowler, having recently become the first to hit the 180-wicket milestone. His lightning-fast arm motion maintains the gold standard in T20I bowling.

Rashid's years of working with tropical climates render him almost unplayable on the spinning track. The leg-spinner's variations, particularly a faster delivery and an unusual googly, keep hitters guessing throughout his spell. His leadership and calm approach under pressure contributed to Afghanistan's bowling power, making them a serious contender for the title.

3. Jacob Duffy (New Zealand)

Jacob Duffy

Jacob Duffy, possibly the most surprising name to some, has been the highest wicket-taker in 2025 for the Kiwis. He recently broke Sir Richard Hadlee's 40-year record for the most international wickets by a New Zealander in a single year, collecting 81 last year. His ability to manage the new ball alongside subtle pace alterations in the death overs has catapulted him into the top five in the world rankings, positioning him as the spearhead of the Kiwi attack.

Duffy's success relies on his versatility and cricket intellect. Unlike typical fast bowlers who concentrate purely on pace, Duffy has perfected the knack of reading circumstances and modifying his angles accordingly. His yorkers in the death overs have proven lethal, with hitters striving to get beneath them for important boundary hits. His fitness and consistency in bowling four overs make him a key addition to New Zealand's campaign.

3. Abrar Ahmed (Pakistan)

Abrar Ahmed

Abrar Ahmed, who is now ranked No. 2 in the ICC, is Pakistan's solution to the spin-heavy conditions in the subcontinent. Abrar, who is famed for his "finger-spun" mystery bowling, has been quite decent in the middle overs. He came into the competition with a career-best ICC rating of 748.

The emerging star from Pakistan is known for breaking up important partnerships, often taking crucial wickets when batsmen seem to be in charge. His record against left-handed batters is especially excellent since his different types of pitches make it hard for left-handed batters to take control of the middle overs.

5. Wanindu Hasaranga (Sri Lanka)

Wanindu Hasaranga

With half of the competition taking place in Sri Lanka, Wanindu Hasaranga is probably the most deadly player on home turf. He is a consistent match-winner who rates among the top five in the world and thrives under the stress of captaincy. His control of the googly and excellent wicket-taking record against the best batting units in Colombo gives him an extra advantage over the tournament's leading wicket-taker.

Wanindu Hasaranga's all-around abilities increase his value, as his fearless hitting in the lower order often leads to important runs. The Sri Lankan skipper has an incredible ability to scoop up wickets in a row, frequently dismantling middle orders on his own. His achievements in previous matches on home soil were nothing short of outstanding, and his comfort with the conditions offers him a psychological advantage over visiting teams.

Sri Lanka will face England in the first T20I of the England tour of Sri Lanka 2026, which will be played at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Friday. Sri Lanka's start to the ODI series was strong with a win, but they soon lost their rhythm and lost the next two matches. England bounced back well after the loss in the 1st ODI and won the series by 1-2.

Skipper Harry Brook managed to score 136 runs in the previous game with only 66 deliveries. Adil Rashid was the top wicket-taker in the series, taking 7 wickets in three games. England will have high hopes for both to continue their red-hot form. Sri Lanka has included Pavan Rathnayake in their T20I squad because he scored 121 runs off 115 balls in the third ODI against England.

The T20 World Cup 2026, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, will start on February 07 with the Indian side playing their opening clash against the United States of America (USA) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. However, the curtain raiser will be between Pakistan and the Netherlands at the SSC Stadium in Colombo on the same morning.
