India is gearing up to face England in the second semifinal of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on June 26. This highly anticipated match is a repeat of the 2022 T20 World Cup semifinal where England triumphed over India by 10 wickets. With a chance to avenge that defeat, India enters the match unbeaten in the tournament.

India have been unbeaten in the tournament so far. During the group stage, India beat Ireland, Pakistan and the USA and their clash against Canada was washed out due to incessant rains.

In the Super 8 stage the Rohit Sharma-led side registered comfortable wins over Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Australia to confirm a place in the semis.

However, there are a few key concerns that India needs to address to ensure they progress to the finals and potentially lift the trophy. Here are three major concerns for India as they prepare for this crucial encounter.

1. Inconsistent form of Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli’s performance woes

Virat Kohli, often hailed as the backbone of the Indian cricket team, has had a disappointing run in this T20 World Cup. Kohli’s form has been a shadow of his usual self, registering scores of 1, 4, 0, 24, 37, and 0. This lack of runs from such a key player is a significant concern for India.

Kohli’s poor form has not only affected the team’s overall performance but also the morale. Known for his inspirational presence, Kohli’s struggles have been a dampener for the team’s spirit. If Kohli fails to perform against England, it could spell trouble for India’s chances of putting up a competitive total or chasing down a big score.

To mitigate this concern, the team management might consider different strategies, such as giving Kohli more time in the nets, or perhaps even a batting order change to help him regain confidence. His partnership with skipper Rohit Sharma, who has been in good form, will be crucial in setting a solid foundation against England.

2. Inconsistent middle order

Risks of a collapsed middle order

India’s middle order, featuring players like Suryakumar Yadav and Rishabh Pant, has shown moments of brilliance but has been largely inconsistent because they haven’t finish well. This inconsistency can be problematic, especially in high-pressure matches like the semifinals.

An unstable middle order risks collapsing under pressure, particularly if the top order fails to deliver. This has been evident in several matches where the middle order failed to build on the solid starts provided by the openers.

The Indian team management might need to reconsider the batting order, perhaps promoting in-form players higher up to ensure stability. Additionally, focusing on mental conditioning and match simulations in practice sessions could help the middle order handle pressure better.

3. Underperformance of Big-Hitters

India’s lineup boasts several big hitters known for their ability to accelerate the run rate, such as Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja. However, these players have not performed up to expectations in this World Cup. Shivam Dube, for instance, has scored only 106 runs in six innings, which is below par given his reputation.

Ravindra Jadeja, the most experienced all-rounder in the team, has also been underwhelming both with the bat and the ball. His performance could be pivotal in the semifinal, and his current form is a cause for concern.

To address this concern, the team could focus on specific training for power hitters, including situational batting practice and mental conditioning. Ensuring that these players peak at the right time will be essential for India’s success.

On a positive note, Hardik Pandya has been a standout performer in this tournament. He has scored 116 runs in four innings and has also been effective with the ball, taking crucial wickets. His all-round performance will be vital for India against England.
