Rohit Sharma’s decision to retire from Test cricket was entirely personal and made without any pressure from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), according to BCCI Vice President Rajiv Shukla. His unexpected announcement came just weeks before India’s five-match Test series against England, starting on June 20. The timing of his retirement has stunned fans and experts alike, especially with such a significant tour ahead, leaving a major void in India’s red-ball leadership and experience.

While Rohit Sharma remains a pillar of strength in India’s white-ball setup, his performance in Test cricket was more measured. Throughout 67 Test matches, he didn’t dominate as consistently as he did in ODIs or T20s. However, his role in stabilizing the team during transitions and leading the side after Virat Kohli's departure as captain added significant value. Despite his quieter numbers, Rohit's contribution to India’s Test journey remains commendable and influential.

"No matter how much I praise him, it will not be enough. Rohit is an extraordinary batsman. The most important thing is that he has not retired from all formats. He will still play in ODIS. So, we hope to make good use of his experience and talent,” Rajiv Shukla said.

Since Rohit’s Test retirement, people have started asking one big question: Who will be the next captain of the Indian Test team? Right now, three names are being discussed: Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, and Shubman Gill. On this, Rajiv Shukla said, “There is no need to guess. The selectors will decide who is right for the job. It will be announced at the right time.”

Rohit Sharma made his international debut in 2007. But he got his first Test cap in 2013. His debut match was played at Eden Gardens in Kolkata against West Indies. He scored a brilliant 177 runs in that match. Rohit has scored a total of 4,301 runs in Test cricket, with an average of 40.57. He has made 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries.
