The 32nd match of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 saw New Zealand register a comfortable victory over Uganda at the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba in Trinidad on June 14. New Zealand’s bowlers, led by Tim Southee, dismantled Uganda’s batting lineup, paving the way for a straightforward chase spearheaded by Devon Conway.
New Zealand won the toss and opted to bowl first, a decision that paid immediate dividends. Tim Southee led the charge with a spectacular spell, claiming 3 wickets for just 4 runs. His early dismissal of Alpesh Ramjani for a 6-ball duck set the tone for the innings. Southee’s disciplined bowling continued to pressure the Ugandan batsmen, culminating in a total of 40 runs for Uganda in 18.4 overs.
Trent Boult and Mitchell Santner provided substantial support to Southee. Boult’s initial strikes removed Uganda’s openers, Ronak Patel and Simon Ssesazi, for 1 and 0 runs respectively. Boult further dismissed Robinson Obuya for a golden duck, leaving Uganda struggling at 10 for 4 after 6.5 overs. Santner bowled effectively in the middle overs, taking 2 wickets for 21 runs. Rachin Ravindra also chipped in with 2 wickets, highlighting a comprehensive team effort in the bowling department.
Uganda’s batsmen faced immense difficulty against New Zealand’s high-quality pace and swing bowling. Kenneth Waiswa was the only player to reach double figures, as the rest of the lineup crumbled under pressure. The inability to rotate strikes and the constant loss of wickets prevented Uganda from mounting any significant resistance.
In pursuit of a modest target of 41, New Zealand’s openers Finn Allen and Devon Conway got off to a flying start. They added 24 runs in just 4.2 overs before Riazat Ali Shah picked up the only wicket of the innings, dismissing Allen for 9. Conway remained unbeaten on 22, guiding New Zealand to a comfortable victory in just 5.1 overs.
Tim Southee expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance despite being out of the tournament: “It was a pretty clinical performance, was nice to get a win. It has been a bit tricky, just try to hit the stumps with variable bounce. Disappointed to find ourselves out of the tournament. We were outplayed in the first two games, we have a proud record in World Cups and that has now come to an end. Had a nice break heading into this World Cup. Always a dream to play for NZ, still enjoying it.”

New Zealand’s dominant performance against Uganda highlight their strength, despite their early exit from the tournament. Uganda, on the other hand, continue to face challenges against top-tier teams, concluding the group stage with a series of heavy losses. The gap between emerging and established cricketing nations remains evident, as New Zealand showcased their prowess in a comprehensive victory.
