The Indian cricket team is set to tour England next month for a five-match Test series, beginning on June 20. Ahead of this crucial series, two major announcements have shaken Indian cricket: Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have both informed the BCCI of their retirement from Test cricket. Their absence will significantly impact the team composition, and the Indian squad for the series has yet to be officially announced by the BCCI.
With the departure of seasoned openers, young talents Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudarshan are strong contenders to open the innings. Both left-handers have shown impressive form in the IPL, and Sudarshan’s experience in English county cricket adds to his credentials. Following them, Shubman Gill is expected to bat at number three, a position he is familiar with in Test cricket. At number four, the team might consider Shreyas Iyer, but KL Rahul is a more seasoned option and better suited for overseas conditions.

Rishabh Pant is likely to occupy the number five slot and is expected to return as India’s first-choice wicketkeeper-batter in the longest format. His aggressive style and experience make him a vital part of the lineup. Nitish Kumar Reddy may also find a spot in the playing XI due to his recent performances in Australia and his ability to contribute with the ball, offering valuable balance to the side.
In terms of spin options, Ravindra Jadeja is expected to be the primary choice, given his all-round capabilities and experience in overseas conditions. Washington Sundar might be considered a backup or a second spinning option depending on the pitch and match conditions. His ability to bat lower down the order and bowl economically strengthens his case for inclusion.
The bowling unit will likely feature four pacers, considering the English conditions. Jasprit Bumrah is the leading candidate to captain the side and lead the pace attack. Alongside him, experienced bowlers like Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar could complete the pace quartet, providing India with a formidable bowling combination suited for seam-friendly English pitches.
