In a remarkable display of determination and skill, the Railways cricket team achieved the highest successful chase in Ranji Trophy history during their ongoing 2023-24 season. Facing Tripura in their final league match at the MBB Stadium, Agartala, Railways showcased their resilience in an exhilarating encounter.

Initially conceding a 44-run lead to Tripura after being dismissed for 105 in pursuit of the opposition’s 149 in the first innings, Railways faced an uphill battle. However, the home side amassed 333 runs in their second innings, setting a daunting target of 378 runs for Railways.

Got Success Over Challenges

Facing the challenge head-on, Railways embarked on their chase on the second half of day three. Despite an early collapse, with the top-order struggling at 31 for three, opener Pratham Singh and Mohammed Saif displayed an exceptional partnership, forging a crucial 175-run stand for the fourth wicket. Singh remained unbeaten on 169 (16 fours, one six), supported by captain Upendra Yadav (27 not out), as Railways surpassed the target in 103 overs.

Highest successful run chases in Ranji Trophy

  • 378/5 by Railways vs Tripura – 2023-24
  • 372/4 by Saurashtra vs Uttar Pradesh – 2019-20
  • 371/4 by Assam vs Services – 2008-09
  • 360/4 by Rajasthan vs Vidarbha – 1989-90
  • 359/4 by Uttar Pradesh vs Maharashtra – 2021-22

This historic achievement by Railways eclipsed the previous record set by Saurashtra, who chased down a 372-run target against Uttar Pradesh during their victorious 2019-20 campaign. Assam’s 370-run chase against Services in the 2008-09 season remains third on the list of most successful chases in Ranji Trophy history.

Despite the defeat, Tripura can take pride in their best-ever finish to an Elite Group Ranji Trophy season, securing 17 points after their 200th match in the tournament.

Railways, despite their stellar performance, will conclude the Elite Group C with 24 points after seven rounds. However, they will miss out on a knockout berth, with Karnataka and Tamil Nadu poised to surpass the required mark from their respective last matches. Currently, Gujarat leads the standings with 25 points after seven games.
