Ganguly broke his silence in response to rumours about his BCCI tenure, as the board will hold elections for several positions on October 18.

As he participated in an event on Thursday, former India captain Sourav Ganguly broke his silence regarding his time with the BCCI by making a rather cryptic comment. This week, it was reported that Roger Binny, a former Indian cricketer, will take over as president of the board instead of Ganguly, who will not serve a second term. In 2019, Ganguly, who is 50 years old, became the president of BCCI.

Ganguly gave a hint that his time at the BCCI might be over when he spoke at an event in Kolkata.

“I was the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal for five years. I have been president of BCCI for years. After all these terms, you have to leave and go. As an administrator, you have to contribute a lot and make things better for the team. Me being a player, who was around for a long time, understood it. I enjoyed my time as an administrator thoroughly. You cannot play forever and you cannot remain in administration forever,”

said Ganguly.

Further in the event, Ganguly also stated that he will “go on to do bigger things in life,” as he recalled his playing days.

“Whatever you do in life, I keep telling everyone that the best days are when you play for the country. I have seen so much after that. I’ve been the president of the CAB (Cricket Association of Bengal), I was the president of BCCI, I will go on to do bigger things in future. But those 15 years were the best days of my life,”

said the former India skipper.

When Sourav Ganguly became president of the CAB in 2015, he began his career in administration. He took over as chair for BCCI in October 2019. During his tenure, the nation’s cricket ecosystem was significantly harmed by the Covid-19 pandemic; However, after the Indian Premier League was held in the UAE in 2020 and 2021, the BCCI eventually overcame the obstacles to bring international cricket and the Indian Premier League back to the country.

However, Virat Kohli’s departure as Indian captain was also quite contentious during Ganguly’s tenure;In October of last year, Kohli announced his resignation from the T20I captaincy, but he was replaced as the ODI captain two months later.Kohli also stepped down as Test match leader in January of this year.

All office bearers from various associations from different parts of the country submitted nominations for various board positions at a meeting of the BCCI on Tuesday at the Trident Hotel in Mumbai.

In the run-up to the October 18 elections, the discussions took place in the internal BCCI meeting.
