Taliban’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi had a video call with Afghanistan’s cricket team captain Rashid Khan to celebrate their historic victory. Afghanistan made it to the T20 World Cup semi-finals for the first time, defeating Bangladesh in a thrilling match.
“The Foreign Minister congratulated Captain Rashid Khan and the team for their remarkable achievement, expressing hope for more victories,” noted the Afghanistan Cricket Board alongside the conversation.
In a dramatic match on Tuesday, Afghanistan scored 115/5 in their innings. Rain affected play, setting Bangladesh a revised target of 114 in 19 overs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method. Afghanistan bowled out Bangladesh for 105 in 17.5 overs, securing an eight-run win.
Captain Rashid Khan and Naveen-ul-Haq each took four wickets in the match, which also saw Afghanistan eliminating Australia from the tournament race.
India’s victory over Australia on Monday in St Lucia meant Australia relied on Bangladesh winning to progress further in the tournament. Ultimately, Afghanistan’s resounding triumph not only sealed their semi-final berth but also underscored their emergence as a force to be reckoned with in T20 cricket.
