The second season of Women’s Premier League (WPL) is all set to enter its second season. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) started the competition last year, with five teams playing in the inaugural edition. While the number of teams remains unchanged this year, the 2024 WPL will begin on February 23, with last season’s finalists – Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals playing the opening match. The big clash will be played at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru at 7:30 PM IST.
Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians won the inaugural WPL title by beating Delhi Capitals at the Brabourne Stadium. As they finished second in the points table, the Mumbai-based franchise defeated UP Warriorz in the Eliminator to reach the final against table-topper Delhi Capitals as well.
The entire tournament will take place across two venues this time. All matches till March 4 will be played in Bengaluru, while Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium will host the rest of the fixtures including the knockout games. The final of the WPL 2024 will take place on March 17.
However, the franchises won’t get the service of a few players of the England women’s team as they are set to play a white-ball series against New Zealand soon after that. Captain Heather Knight, who played for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the last edition, has been replaced by South African all-rounder Nadine de Klerk as well. Meanwhile, UP Warriors won’t get the services of pacer Lauren Bell, who has been replaced by Chamari Athapaththu.
