The first day of the third Test match between England and India at the historic venue of Lord's on July 10 was disappointing for England as their scoring rate was just three runs per over. When India won the toss and decided to field first, England had an awkward start to their first innings. Nitish Kumar Reddy managed to get both openers out very quickly to reduce England to 44/2. That early blow affected England's scoring rate as their batters were rebuilding their innings slowly.

Joe Root and Ollie Pope put together a good partnership of 109 runs, but Ravindra Jadeja ended Pope’s innings by dismissing him for a respectable 44 runs. Soon after, Harry Brook was bowled by Jasprit Bumrah for 11, which left the England innings in a slightly vulnerable state. Despite injuries from batting edges and occasional reckless wickets, they managed to cobble together an okay score due to some solid middle-order batting partnerships.

At stumps, Joe Root was playing well on 99* from 191 balls, and only needed one more run to complete yet another test century. England captain Ben Stokes was supporting him well on 39* from 102 balls faced. England were 251/4 at the end of play from 83 overs faced, and now an interesting battle awaits for Day 2.

All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy etched his name in the record books by becoming only the second Indian pacer since 2000 to claim two wickets in his first over of a Test match. On Day 1 of the third Test, he dismissed Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley in the 14th over, giving India an early advantage at Lord’s.

He now joins Irfan Pathan, who achieved the feat with a hat-trick against Pakistan in 2006 during his first over. Before them, Javagal Srinath was the last Indian pacer to do so in 1999 against New Zealand in Hamilton. Reddy’s impactful debut over adds a memorable moment to his budding international career.

England’s Joe Root achieved a significant milestone by joining the elite club of players with the joint-second most 50-plus scores in Test cricket. On Day 1 of the third Test, he reached his 67th Test fifty with a boundary early in the 46th over, marking his 103rd 50-plus score in the format and further cementing his legacy in the game.

With this feat, Root now shares the second spot with legends Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting, who also have 103 scores of 50 or more in Tests. He now stands just behind India’s cricketing icon Sachin Tendulkar, who holds the record with 119 50-plus scores, making Root the closest active player to challenge that towering benchmark.
