Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s exit from IPL 2024 after losing the Eliminator to Rajasthan Royals also marked the end of one of their beloved player journeys in the league. It was the last hurrah for Dinesh Karthik, who was wearing an RCB jersey on the cricket field—or for any franchise, for that matter. DK didn’t make an official announcement, but the post-match scenes were self-explanatory. Karthik had retired from IPL.

Over 17 years, Karthik played for six franchises, showcasing his versatility and adaptability. After Delhi, he moved to Kings XI Punjab in 2011, where he continued to build his reputation. His stints with Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Lions, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru added new dimensions to his illustrious career. Dinesh Karthik shared a video from his official Instagram account, which expresses gratitude and a hint of sadness as he bids farewell to the IPL.

Dinesh Karthik’s Top-5 Memorable Knocks in IPL History

An IPL veteran, Dinesh Karthik has delivered some of the most memorable performances in the league’s history. Take a look at his top five memorable knocks that have etched his name in the annals of IPL greatness.

1. 83 off 35 Balls for RCB vs SRH in IPL 2024

In a high-scoring thriller at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, RCB faced Sunrisers Hyderabad, chasing a massive 288-run target. Despite falling short by 25 runs, Karthik’s explosive innings of 83 off 35 balls was the highlight. At 38, Karthik proved he still had the firepower, enhancing his reputation as a T20 finisher.

Karthik’s blistering knock included five fours and seven sixes, maintaining a strike rate 237.14. His partnership with Mahipal Lomror yielded 59 runs off 29 balls, followed by a 63-run stand with Anuj Rawat. These efforts kept RCB in the hunt and showcased Karthik’s ability to perform under pressure.

2. 66 Runs off 34 Deliveries for RCB vs Delhi Capitals in 2022

In 2022, coming at number 7, Karthik’s 66 off 34 balls against Delhi Capitals was crucial for RCB’s 189 runs. His innings included five boundaries and five sixes, earning him the player of the match award. Delhi’s chase ended at 173, with Karthik’s knock being the difference.

Karthik punished Mustafizur Rahman in the 18th over, scoring 28 runs with a sequence of 4, 4, 4, 6, 6, 4. He brought up his half-century in just 26 balls, showing his ability to accelerate the scoring in the death overs.

3. 97 Runs off 50 Deliveries for KKR vs RR in 2018

In 2018, Karthik’s unbeaten 97 off 50 balls against Rajasthan Royals was a masterclass in T20 batting. This innings helped Kolkata Knight Riders post a competitive 175-run total. His innings featured 7 boundaries and 9 sixes, demonstrating his ability to dominate bowlers.

Stuck in the slow start of Knight Riders’ innings, Karthik accelerated in the second half, scoring 55 of the team’s 75 runs in the last five overs. His aggressive approach against Jaydev Unadkat and other bowlers turned the game, although RR clinched victory with four balls to spare.

4. 86 Runs off 48 Deliveries for Mumbai Indians vs Delhi Daredevils in 2013

Against his former side, Delhi Daredevils, Karthik’s 86 off 48 balls for Mumbai Indians was a match-winning effort. After Sachin Tendulkar’s dismissal, Karthik took charge, forming a vital partnership with Rohit Sharma. This innings turned Mumbai’s poor start into a commanding total 209, leading to a 44-run victory.

Karthik dominated the third-wicket partnership, reaching 50 off 29 balls and then accelerating to 86. His aggressive stroke play, especially against Ashish Nehra, was instrumental in Mumbai’s big total and subsequent win.

5. 69 Runs off 33 Deliveries for Kings XI Punjab vs Kochi Tuskers Kerala in 2011

Chasing 179 runs, Karthik’s 69 off 33 balls almost sealed the win for Kings XI Punjab. His partnership with Shaun Marsh was pivotal, as they added 111 runs for the third wicket. This inning played on a batsman-friendly surface, highlighted Karthik’s ability to score quickly and efficiently.

Karthik capitalized on short deliveries and maintained a high scoring rate. Despite his dismissal before the finish, David Hussey completed the job, securing a thrilling victory for Punjab.
