Bangladesh defeated Pakistan 2-1 in the just concluded ODI series at home. All of the matches were held at Dhaka's Shere Bangla Stadium, where they had previously lost two consecutive games to New Zealand in 2023. A strong bowling attack combined with excellent bowling conditions at the venue creates the ideal recipe for a comeback. New Zealand's bowling attack appears to have changed dramatically since their previous tour. Michael Bracewell is a massive miss. Ben Sears and Blaire Tickner must spearhead the attack against a formidable batting lineup that includes Litton Das, Soumya Sarkar, as well as the in-form Tanzid Hasan. The hosts appear stronger on document, with an in-form and more experienced squad overall.

This is a real pitch that benefits both batters and bowlers. Fast bowlers will do well here with the new ball, particularly in overcast conditions. However, as the ball's shine wears off, batting will become easier.

With overcast overhead conditions anticipated in the first half of the game, we believe both captains will prefer to field first in this match.

Bangladesh will take on New Zealand in the 1st ODI of the three-match series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on April 17. Bangladesh are coming into this series with good confidence, while New Zealand have a young and less experienced team this time.

Bangladesh have been in strong form in recent ODI series. They won against West Indies and also defeated Pakistan 2-1. Their batting has some good players like Litton Das and Towhid Hridoy. Their spin attack is also strong, which will help them at home conditions. The pace attack will be led by Mustafizur Rahman. Bangladesh will look to start the series with a win.

New Zealand recently performed well against India, but this time they have come with a new and young team. Many senior players are missing, so this series will be important for their young players to gain experience. Tom Latham will lead the side, and players like Dean Foxcroft and Adithya Ashok will be key. New Zealand will aim to give a tough fight.

BAN vs NZ: Pitch Report

The pitch in Mirpur usually helps spinners because it is slow, making batting difficult, especially in the second innings. In the recent ODI series, the pitch had more help for bowlers. Fast bowlers need to bowl in the right areas due to low and uneven bounce. Batters must take time to settle and play carefully against spin. The average first innings score in 2026 is around 226 runs.

Bangladesh will face New Zealand in the first ODI of the New Zealand tour of Bangladesh 2026, which will be played at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur. Bangladesh will be led by Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the ODIs, and many players, who are currently playing the PSL 2026, are set to join the squad for the series. Having defeated Pakistan in an ODI series recently, Bangladesh will be high on confidence as they begin their preparation for the  2027 World Cup.

On the other hand, New Zealand will be entering this series after thrashing India in India in the last series and winning by a 2-1 margin in January this year. However, New Zealand will be arriving in Bangladesh without their key players this time, making them one of the most inexperienced sides in recent years. Experienced Tom Latham will lead the team for this series.

After recovering from a head injury, New Zealand cricketer Rachin Ravindra makes his comeback with a great match-winning century against Bangladesh to secure Blackcaps' place in the Semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. This result means that India also booked their place for the Semi-finals of the tournament, while the hosts and defending champions Pakistan are out of the tournament despite one match to be played.

Rawalpindi hosted the Group A Bangladesh vs New Zealand match, where the Blackcaps skipper Mitchell Santner chose to field first. Bangladesh scored 236/9 in 50 overs, and Bangladesh chased down the target in 46.1 overs after losing five wickets.

Bangladesh captain fought hard along with Jaker Ali

Bangladesh had a better start as the openers Tanzid Hasan and captain Nazmul Hossain Shanto set up a 45-run partnership for the first wicket. Once that partnership was broken, as Tanzir was dismissed for run-a-ball 24 runs, the Tigers were losing the next wickets at regular intervals, as the skipper didn't get proper support from the other end.

Struggling at 118/5, Shanto got some support from Jaker Ali, as they had a 45-run partnership for the sixth wicket. After completing his 50 in 71 balls, Shanto carried his innings to 77 off 110 balls with nine fours, as Will O’Rourke dismissed him in the 38th over. Rishad Hossain also added a crucial 26 off 25 balls, while Ali stretched his innings to 45 off 55 balls with three fours and one six.

Among the New Zealand bowlers, Michael Bracewell took four wickets (4/26) and all wickets were Bangladesh's five dismissals, and Will O’Rourke also picked up two wickets (2/48).

New Zealand lost top orders cheaply before Ravindra and Latham set the game

In chasing, New Zealand lost Will Young (0) and Kane Williamson (5) very early. Opener Devon Conway (30) then had a 57-run partnership for the third wicket, before the opening batter was played on during Mustafizur Rahman's over. Struggling at 72/3, New Zealand batters Rachin Ravindra and Tom Latham had a solid partnership of 129 runs for the fourth wicket. Latham scored 55 off 76 balls (three fours), while Ravindra scored 112 off 105 balls with 12 fours and one six.

Although both the set batters lost their wickets lately, Glenn Phillips (21*) and the Player of the Match Michael Bracewell (11*) comfortably finished the game.

Defending champions Pakistan are out of the tournament

With this result, India and New Zealand have officially confirmed their place in the Semi-finals with four points each. On the other hand, the hosts and the defending champions Pakistan and Bangladesh are yet to meet in the group stage and both are out of the tournament.

Bangladesh find themselves in a tough spot after their defeat to India in the Champions Trophy opener, leaving them with little margin for error as they prepare to face a strong New Zealand side in the fourth Group A match. With a short tournament format, an early loss can prove costly, potentially forcing a team into must-win situations.

Despite a spirited fightback against India in Dubai—recovering from 35/5 to post 228 and making the opposition work hard for the chase—Bangladesh cannot afford further slip-ups. Towhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali provided stability with the bat on a sluggish surface, but the team will hope for a stronger showing from Soumya Sarkar, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto to avoid another top-order collapse. Their bowling unit, particularly the slower bowlers, performed well, but improved discipline in line and length will be crucial.

New Zealand, in contrast, showed composure after early setbacks against Pakistan. Will Young and Tom Latham struck impressive centuries, while Glenn Phillips' quickfire fifty propelled them to a commanding total. Their bowlers then executed a clinical performance, combining pace and spin effectively to secure a dominant win. Having adapted well to conditions in Pakistan and maintaining an unbeaten run since the preceding tri-series, New Zealand will be confident of extending their momentum and strengthening their semifinal bid.

*Match Details:*
- Date & Time: Monday, February 24 at 2:30 PM IST (2:00 PM Local Time)
- Venue: Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium
- Pitch & Conditions: Rawalpindi last hosted ODIs in April 2023, where Pakistan comfortably chased targets of 337 and 289 against New Zealand. The venue has seen seven centuries in five ODIs since 2010, suggesting a batting-friendly surface. Three of the five ODIs have been won by the team batting first, with one ending in a tie.

Team Updates

Bangladesh:
Mahmudullah, who missed the opener due to a calf injury, will undergo a fitness assessment before the match. If fit, he could replace Mushfiqur Rahim, with Jaker Ali continuing as the wicketkeeper. Towhid Hridoy has recovered from cramps sustained in the India match. Bangladesh may also consider bringing in express pacer Nahid Rana, who impressed in their Test series win over Pakistan in Rawalpindi, as a replacement for Tanzim Hasan Sakib.

Probable XI: Tanzid Hasan, Soumya Sarkar, Najmul Hossain Shanto (c), Towhid Hridoy, Mushfiqur Rahim/Mahmudullah, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Jaker Ali, Rishad Hossain, Tanzim Hasan Sakib/Nahid Rana, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman

New Zealand:
Rachin Ravindra was unavailable for the first game due to a forehead injury, but even if he recovers, New Zealand might stick with the same XI.

Probable XI: Devon Conway, Will Young, Kane Williamson, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner (c), Nathan Smith, Matt Henry, William O’Rourke

The teams had contrasting fortunes in the inaugural tournament matches. Following their victory over the host nation, the New Zealand team has gained momentum. They have recently emerged as a formidable force in ODIs. Bangladesh, as one of the subcontinent's teams, will hope to cause trouble. They may find Mitchell Santner's side too strong for them.

Bangladesh has struggled to make the transition from plucky underdogs to true challengers in these tournaments over the years. Considering the team combination, New Zealand is expected to win this match.

Bangladesh went through the old-school grind in their first game of the tournament. They lost the game eventually but will be happy with a few things. To start, they were 35-6 before their lower middle-order rescued them with 90s style knocks. They scraped themselves to total and did a fair job with the ball as well. Dubai was low and slow, and India may seemed to have one comfortably on paper but Bangladesh did have their moments. An early wicket, or tying down the likes of Shubman Gill and KL Rahul a little more and they coud have run things a lot closer than it was.

New Zealand though are on a roll. If Bangladesh went with the 90s template, New Zealand beat Pakistan with the GenZ template of ODI Cricket. They started smoothly, focusing on strike-rotation after some early wickets while getting the occasional boundary every couple overs. They kept the scoreboard ticking well and went all guns blazing in the back end with Tom Latham and Glenn Phillips doing a lot of damage. Their commanding manner of victory sould keep them favorites against Bangladesh, but memories of 2017 exist. In 2017, Bangladesh, with the help of an incredible partnership from Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmadullah carried their side home in a chase to seal a Semi-Final spot knocking New Zealand out.

Will Young

Will Young was a doubt for the eleven with Rachin Ravindra around. Ravindra's injury though gave Young a game and now Young stands undroppable. He was as fluent as ever in the first game and will enjoy a surface that gets the ball coming onto the bat even better.

Towhid Hridoy

Hridoy too dug deep and played a really good innings in the previous game. He has a better track to bat on now and a lot more confidence which could bring even better out of him.

New Zealand start favorites with recent form looking good.

BAN vs NZ Match Preview

The three-match T20I series between New Zealand and Bangladesh concludes on New Year’s Eve at Mount Maunganui’s Bay Oval. The visitors are 1-0 up after winning the first match in Napier before the second T20I ended in a no-result after only 11 overs were completed. The conditions for Sunday’s game appear to favor swing bowlers, and New Zealand has a strong group of players ready to capitalize. It would be surprising if the hosts were unable to bring the series to a close. In some ways, Bangladesh has an advantage in that their bowlers have already played on this pitch. They will be eager to get going again in this match. This will be a difficult end to the tour, but the squad will be confident going into this game.

  • Najmul Hossain Shanto- it has been an up and down 2023 for the skipper who undoubtedly is one of Bangladesh’s most talented young batters. He will want to lead from the front with the bat in this game.
  • Mustafizur Rahman- the experienced T20 specialist bowled tightly in his two overs on Friday and he will be looking to cause more problems over the course of four overs in this match.

Top Picks – New Zealand

  • Daryl Mitchell- the tall right-handed batter who will be with Chennai Super Kings in next year’s IPL will be the wicket which all Bangladesh bowlers will want to take in this game.
  • Tim Southee- the experienced swing bowler made his T20I debut back in February 2008 and he is always well equipped to take advantage of humid conditions.

BAN vs NZ Probable Winners:

With the match called off early on Friday due to inclement weather, New Zealand can no longer win the series, and their priority will now be to avoid an embarrassing home series defeat to Bangladesh. The conditions will suit New Zealand better, but Bangladesh has swing bowlers who can take advantage of them as well. We predict that New Zealand will win a close game. Considering the team combination, New Zealand is expected to win this match.

BAN vs NZ Match Preview

Bangladesh travels to Mount Maunganui with a 1-0 lead in the T20I series against New Zealand, knowing that a win on Friday will give them the series with one game remaining. On Wednesday, the Black Caps scored 134/9 in Napier before the Tigers reached the target with 8 balls remaining. Despite not fielding their strongest T20I squad for this series, New Zealand has plenty of talent and should be able to defeat Bangladesh at home. The Tigers’ confidence is growing, and the game on Friday will not be easy. Bangladesh has historically struggled with self-belief when playing in New Zealand. But they have now won three games in a row on this tour. Victory in Mount Maunganui will be difficult, but if they can pull it off again, they will have made a significant statement.

Topmost Picks for BAN vs NZ Dream11 Prediction:

Top Picks – Bangladesh

  • Litton Das- the keeper batter struck two fours and one six in his unbeaten innings which saw Bangladesh all the way to victory in Napier.
  • Shoriful Islam- the young and exciting left-arm swing bowler has had an excellent tour and dismissed Finn Allen and Glenn Phillips from his second and third balls of the game on Wednesday.

Top Picks – New Zealand

  • Daryl Mitchell- the all-rounder did not bowl in the opening T20I of the series but still hit two fours when batting. He will have been very disappointed with his return on Wednesday and we can expect better in Mount Maunganui.
  • Mitchell Santner- the stand-in skipper took a wicket and was the joint-most economical bowler for the hosts in the first T20I and he continues to deliver for his country irrespective of the format.

BAN vs NZ Probable Winners:

Few people predicted that Bangladesh would win two games in a row on this tour, but that is exactly what has happened. Shoriful Islam has been a difficult bowler for New Zealand’s batters to face, and we can expect him to enjoy the conditions again in this match. We predict that New Zealand will outperform Australia with both bat and ball on Friday and win this T20I. Considering the team combination, New Zealand is expected to win this match.
