In IPL 2025 match 25, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had a challenging performance against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Chennai Super Kings Innings

CSK had a forgettable day with the bat at Chepauk. Having decided to bat first, their innings never took any sort of momentum, and they were limited to 103/9 in 20 overs. The only partnership of any merit was between Vijay Shankar and Rahul Tripathi, who compiled 43 runs for the third wicket. Shivam Dube was the highest scorer, finishing not out on 20 from 16 deliveries. But a collapse in the middle order left them from 59/2 to 75/8, with spinners of Kolkata gaining control. Sunil Narine stood out with the ball with a tight 2 for 9, supported by Varun Chakravarthy (2/22) and Moeen Ali (2/24). The score of 103 proved to be CSK's lowest-ever home score in IPL history.

Kolkata Knight Riders Innings

KKR made the pursuit look easy. Openers Sunil Narine and Ajinkya Rahane gave a fast start, with Narine making a swift 31. Rahane added 16, and Rinku Singh ended the match in style, hitting a six to win the game. KKR reached 107/2 in 10.1 overs, winning the match by a comprehensive 8-wicket margin. Their overall endeavor, particularly their bowling attack, arranged a simple chase, thus making this one of their most clinical performances so far this season.

Post-Match Reactions

  • MS Dhoni (Captain CSK): "We've had a couple of hard nights. We need to return to basics and work on developing partnerships. Losing too many wickets in the early stages made it hard. There are positives — we've played good games, and our openers are quality batsmen. We just need to play to our strengths and not get desperate."
  • Sunil Narine (Player of the Match): "It was near-perfect game. I work on my strengths and adjust according to conditions, particularly in powerplay. My job is to provide the team with a rapid start — it works sometimes, sometimes not, but that is the strategy.

  • Moeen Ali (KKR): "Bowling against two left-handers was a bonus. The pitch was sticky, so I tried to concentrate on spin and control. Sunil's been marvelous, and I just try and bowl tight to help the other spinners. It was a fantastic team effort."
  • Ajinkya Rahane (KKR Captain): "We had our plans you know. I've played here for more than 2 years, Moeen knows the conditions and DJ (Bravo) knows it too. Frankly, I thought the wicket would play better but it didn't play the way we thought. We had our plans and it worked really well for us tonight. Still a long way to go in the tournament. So, I don't want to share too many things.

The April 11, 2025, match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) proved to be a record-breaking match. KKR successfully chased a modest total of 104 runs in only 10.1 overs, which is the quickest successful chase against CSK in Indian Premier League history. The dominant batting performance by KKR left the CSK bowlers with no option but to watch as the match slipped away from them very quickly.

This record-breaking chase over the former fastest chase of CSK was done by the Mumbai Indians (MI) in 2020.
They had chased 115 runs in 12.2 overs then. KKR's attacking style of cricket from the very start of their innings maintained pressure on CSK. Quinton de Kock and Ajinkya Rahane paved the way with their front-line performances, and their team finished the game in style. The fans in the stadium and around the world were thrilled by the fearless batting performance.

Many teams attempted to beat CSK in the years gone by, but very few were able to complete the game so swiftly. Punjab Kings (PBKS) in 2021 had pursued a target of 135 in 13 overs, and Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in 2012 had pursued 111 runs in 13.2 overs.
But KKR's pursuit in 2025 has now created a new benchmark that will be difficult to surpass in later seasons.

Fastest Successful Chases Against CSK in IPL History

  • KKR in 2025: Target 104, chased in 10.1 overs
  • MI in 2020: Target 115, chased in 12.2 overs
  • PBKS in 2021: Target 135, chased in 13.0 overs
  • DD in 2012: Target 111, chased in 13.2 overs

Past Fastest Pursuits Against CSK in IPL

The list of fastest successful run chases against CSK has some thrilling moments. Prior to KKR's astonishing feat, the fastest was MI's chase of 115 in 12.2 overs in 2020. PBKS closely followed that with their 13-over chase in 2021, while DD's run in 2012 took 13.2 overs. All these quick conclusions reflect how performance domination can favor the chasing side, particularly against a powerful outfit like CSK.

KKR's firebrand batting and aggressive nature facilitated this record. It wasn't merely running down a small target but achieving it at such pace that history was made. The win will always be a moment of pride for KKR and their followers, as they now possess the record for the fastest chase in history against Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

The IPL 2025 Chennai Super Kings (CSK) vs Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) clash provided the spectators with plenty to cheer about. In addition to the exciting cricketing action, the highlight that took everyone's breath away was from the commentary stand. The erstwhile Australian opener Matthew Hayden affectionately nicknamed MS Dhoni "Tuk Tuk" in the course of the match. He made this observation while observing Dhoni play some dot balls as he constructed his innings cautiously on the slow Chepauk pitch.

Hayden's statement was not an attempt to disparage Dhoni but was simply a light comment. In the game of cricket, "Tuk Tuk" is frequently used for slow-playing players and defensive players in adverse conditions. Hayden, respecting Dhoni enormously, has never spoken ill of him but rather has always called him the mainstay of CSK.
His light-hearted remark brought a refreshing touch to the commentary, making the game even more exciting for all the fans from across the globe.

As it is known to all, MS Dhoni possesses a smart game sense. Despite beginning slowly, it was a part of his plan to study the pitch first and then go for big hits.
His composed attitude once again justified why he is rated among the top finishers in cricket. Eventually, Dhoni did what he does best  : finished the game with coolness and class.

In reply, KKR easily chased the target, reaching 104 for 3 in only 17.3 overs.
Quinton de Kock was the star with 38 runs, and Ajinkya Rahane supported well with 28 runs. KKR's top order laid the foundation for the chase, making it an easy win. While the five-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings suffered a batting collapse against Kolkata Knight Riders in the 25th match of the IPL 2025, CSK skipper MS Dhoni was out cheaply but in a controversial way, as many cricket fans were confused.

MS Dhoni returned as captain

After KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane chose to bowl first, CSK recorded their third-lowest total and lowest ever home total by scoring only 103/9 in 20 overs. As the regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of the tournament due to an elbow injury, MS Dhoni has returned to the leadership role, but has started in a nightmare.

Sunil Narine dismissed MS Dhoni

Battling at 59/2, CSK suddenly found themselves at 79/9 due to losing regular wickets without managing any boundaries for a long time. Skipper MS Dhoni came to bat at no.9 and scored one off four balls before Sunil Narine trapped him for an lbw. While the umpire raised his finger, Dhoni showed his bat and immediately went for a review.

In the review, there was a little but strong enough spike. However, the third umpire didn't feel that the spike was from the inside edge of Dhoni's bat. Denying any inside edge, the third umpire went for the ball-tracking that clarified a clear out for Dhoni as the decision was retained.

IPL 2025: CSK vs KKR – Player Battles to Watch Out For

Match: Chennai Super Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders
Date: April 11th, 2025
Time: 7:30 PM IST
Venue: MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai

Key Player Combos
Ruturaj Gaikwad vs. Varun Chakravarthy
CSK's measured opener Ruturaj will be looking for a steady start, but Varun's Chepauk spinning trickery could be just what's needed in response.

Shivam Dube vs. Andre Russell
There should be fireworks when Dube's spanking strokeplay gets together with Russell's pace and short-pitched aggression two game-changers in the middle overs.

Devon Conway vs. Harshit Rana
Conway's elegant strokeplay might be given a test by Rana's bounce and precision early in.

Sunil Narine vs. Ravindra Jadeja
Two all-round veterans may clash. Jadeja’s left-arm spin will try to pin down Narine’s intent at the top.

MS Dhoni vs. Moeen Ali
Dhoni’s finishing flair may be challenged by Moeen’s off-spin, especially if CSK needs quick runs at the death.

CSK's problems grow bigger. The sides best batter has been ruled out of the tournament leaving CSK without their batting lynchpin and their captain. Dhoni steps up as captain again as he did in 2022, but like in 2022 he comes in as a captain taking over a side which is struggling. They are on the risk of losing a third in a row at Chepauk, something that has not happened in their history before. KKR too are on the bottom half and their stalwarts in Sunil Narine and Andre Russell are yet to find their best.

Chennai Super Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders Players to Watch

Ravindra Jadeja

With Ruturaj Gaikwad out CSK will need their biggest star in the unit to step up big time. He has not done much of note yet, struggling against spin and not living up to expectations in the back end. His bowling too has not been very penetrative and that is what CSK will really be relying on as his form is directly proportional to CSK's fortunes.

Venkatesh Iyer

Venkatesh Iyer has found his rhythm with two solid knocks. He likes the Chennai attack as well and the longer he bats the longer he could keep the spinners, in particular Jadeja, away.

Chennai Super Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders Match Tips

CSK are struggling at home and the loss of their captain leaves them with a massive disadvantage coming into the fixture.

The Chennai Super Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders (CSK vs KKR) match has been scheduled for the 25th match of the IPL 2025. MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk, Chennai) will host this fixture on Friday evening (April 11).

After starting this season with a four-wicket win against Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings suffered four consecutive defeats. The five-time IPL champions are in the ninth position in the points table with only two points after playing five games.

Meanwhile, the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders have four points after five matches with a record of two wins and three losses. They are currently in the sixth position in the points table.

Both CSK and KKR are struggling with their weak top-order batting form, while CSK have a poorer record. As the teams are desperate to claim more early victories, their middle-order batting seems unstable. Most of KKR's bowlers are struggling to maintain consistency, while CSK's fielders have brought disappointing results for their hard-working bowlers.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) supporters were left perplexed when their star batsman and captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, was spotted playing football even after being ruled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season owing to an elbow fracture. Gaikwad injured himself while playing against Rajasthan Royals on March 30, 2025, in Guwahati, leading CSK to officially announce that MS Dhoni would be the new captain for the rest of the tournament. The surprise image of Gaikwad kicking a football nonchalantly has raised questions regarding the extent of his injury and how long he will take to recover, with fans and pundits left in disagreement.

The altercation occurred during a light-hearted warm-up session at a stadium, where Gaikwad, clad in his CSK training kit, was spotted interacting with teammates on the pitch. Although he was careful with his right arm, the location of the reported injury, he displayed no signs of discomfort making use of his legs, which led to speculation regarding the actual severity of his condition. Gaikwad's elbow fracture, described as a hairline injury according to CSK's official communication, was already a major setback for the team, considering his good form this season, having scored two half-centuries in three games. The team management had decided to play it safe and focus on his long-term recovery rather than an early comeback.

But Gaikwad's footballing activity has prompted some to question whether CSK may have exaggerated the effect of the injury, while others believe that an elbow problem would not necessarily limit lower-body movements. This has generated a buzz around his possible return, although no official word has confirmed any alteration in his status.

What Will This Mean for Gaikwad and CSK's Next Game?

The event has also sparked discussions about the recovery of athletes in professional sports. Even though Gaikwad's conduct could indicate he has improved enough to compete, they will be without Gaikwad in their next match, on March 25 against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on April 11, 2025, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai starting at 7:30 PM local time. MS Dhoni will lead a team without Gaikwad, calling

The IPL 2025 25th match has been scheduled for Chennai Super Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders (CSK vs KKR). MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk, Chennai) will host this fixture on Friday evening (April 11).

Five-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings started the IPL 2025 with a four-wicket win against Mumbai Indians, but then suffered four consecutive losses against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (50 runs), Rajasthan Royals (6 runs), Delhi Capitals (25 runs), and Punjab Kings (18 runs).

Meanwhile, the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders are struggling to perform confidently. Apart from beating Rajasthan Royals in their second game and SunRisers Hyderabad in their fourth match by eight wickets and 80 runs, respectively, they lost against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (7 wickets), Mumbai Indians (8 wickets), and Lucknow Super Giants (4 runs).

IPL 2025, Match 25: CSK vs KKR (Playing XIs Status) - MS Dhoni set to return as captain after Ruturaj Gaikwad's injury

CSK's batting is a big concern, especially their top-order batters, who have failed to provide strong starts. Meanwhile, bowlers' hard work has been denied due to poor fielding. They need to make strong improvements in their performance. As the skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of the tournament due to an elbow injury, MS Dhoni will lead the team for the rest of the tournament. Rahul Tripathy or Deepak Hooda can replace Gaikwad for the upcoming match.

The batting of KKR is also in question, as the top-order batting is a concern for them too. While Chennai offers more for the spinners, English all-rounder Moeen Ali may replace Spencer Johnson for the upcoming match.

Chennai Super Kings Predicted Playing XI: Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway/Khaleel Ahmed (Impact Player Sub), Rahul Tripathi/Deepak Hooda, Vijay Shankar, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (Captain and wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Matheesha Pathirana, Noor Ahmad, Kamlesh Nagarkoti.
