The Indian Premier League (IPL) has kicked off with a flurry of excitement and anticipation. However, for the Mumbai Indians (MI), the journey has been less than ideal, facing defeat in both their initial matches. Analyzing their performance and implementing strategic changes is imperative for MI to bounce back stronger in the tournament.

Despite entering IPL 2024 with high hopes, Mumbai Indians faced disappointment early on, losing their first two matches. In both encounters, the team struggled to find its rhythm, with both bowlers and batsmen failing to deliver impactful performances.

In their opening match against Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians suffered a narrow defeat by six runs. Captain Hardik Pandya’s decision-making came under scrutiny as he opted not to utilize Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling prowess during the crucial early overs. This tactical error contributed to Gujarat’s explosive start, setting the tone for a challenging chase for Mumbai Indians.

The eighth clash of IPL 2024 witnessed a record-breaking performance by Sunrisers Hyderabad against Mumbai Indians. SRH batters dominated the opposition bowlers, setting the all-time highest team total in IPL history (277/3). Mumbai Indians’ bowlers struggled to contain the onslaught, conceding runs at an alarming rate.

Strategic Moves for Mumbai Indians

To reverse their fortunes in IPL 2024, Mumbai Indians must adopt a proactive approach and implement strategic changes in their gameplay. Here are three key strategies they should consider:

1. Jasprit Bumrah Should Open the Bowling

One glaring omission in Mumbai Indians’ bowling strategy has been the under-utilization of Jasprit Bumrah’s prowess. In both matches, Bumrah was not given the opportunity to open the bowling, despite his proven track record as a premium pacer. Captain Hardik Pandya should reconsider his bowling lineup and entrust Bumrah with the responsibility of opening the attack to apply early pressure on the opposition.

In the last two games when Jasprit Bumrah has come onto bowl. The game is already set up for the opponents. Bumrah was the most economical bowler in the match against SRH, conceding 36 runs in his four overs in a high-scoring thriller.

The new skipper of MI, Hardik Pandya and the MI team management should re-consider their bowling attack if they want to put pressure early in the match which cost early wickets for the opposition in the power play.

2. Better Bowling Options

Mumbai Indians’ bowling unit has failed to make a significant impact in the tournament thus far. While Jasprit Bumrah has been a standout performer, the rest of the bowlers have struggled to contain runs effectively.

In the first two matches, MI’s bowling wasn’t as impressive for which they are known. MI management tired Luke Wood, Jasprit Bumrah, Gerald Coetzee, and the skipper himself, but their performance wasn’t up to the mark. Then, in the next match against SRH, Kwena Maphaka came in the place of Luke Wood. But it seems too early for the MI management to pick South Africa’s Under-19 World Cup star in the XI and give him the role of opening bowler. The young pacer recorded the third-most expensive bowling spell in the league’s history.

Now, MI team management will consider replacing Maphaka. In place of him, there are too many options for MI; they can go with Akash Madhwal/ Kumar Kartikeya or Srilankan pacer Nuwan Thushara.

Sri Lankan pacer Nuwan Thushara is one of the best overseas bowling replacements for the Proteas cricketer. Notably, just weeks before the 2024 season, MI’s recruit flaunted his prowess by taking a hat-trick in a T20I match against Bangladesh in Sylhet. Thushara, who is compared to the legendary Lankan Lasith Malinga, was impressive for MI Cape Town in the SA20 2024 as well, which would add more confidence to include the pacer.

MI management should explore alternative bowling options, considering replacements such as Nuwan Thushara or Mohammad Nabi to bolster their bowling arsenal.

3. Unity and Full Potential

Reports of internal discord within the Mumbai Indians team have surfaced, indicating a division between factions led by Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya, respectively.

A recent report by Dainik Jagran sheds light on internal dynamics within the Mumbai Indians team. It revealed the existence of two distinct factions: one led by Rohit Sharma, which includes players like Jasprit Bumrah, Tilak Verma, and others, and another led by Hardik Pandya, with members such as Ishan Kishan and others. Additionally, the report highlights that Hardik Pandya has garnered support from the team owners, further indicating the division within the team. This hampers the performance of the players, so they should try to play like a team, not like a group.

Another important thing MI should improve on is their fielding. Travis Head started the carnage in the second over of the innings, and interestingly, he was dropped on the very first ball of that over. Also in that MI bowlers and fielders give a total of 19 extras. There were some sloppy fielding efforts, some overthrows, and byes to add to the woes of the five-time champions in a forgettable outing.

To overcome this challenge, MI players must prioritize team cohesion and unity. Additionally, they must focus on playing to their full potential, minimizing fielding errors, and capitalizing on every opportunity to regain momentum in the tournament.
