Past Winners of the T20 World Cup
A young India team won the first edition of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in 2007 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. India defeated Pakistan by five runs in the final. This victory changed Indian cricket and later led to the start of the Indian Premier League. However, India had to wait 17 more years to win their second T20 World Cup title. In 2024, Rohit Sharma led India to victory against South Africa in the final.
After finishing as runners-up in 2007, Pakistan became champions in 2009 by defeating Sri Lanka in the final. Since then, Pakistan have not won another title. They reached the final once again in 2022 but lost to England. England first won the T20 World Cup in 2010 after beating Australia in the final. They won the title again in 2022 under the captaincy of Jos Buttler by defeating Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
West Indies became the first team to win the T20 World Cup twice. They won the title in 2012 and again in 2016 after defeating England in the final at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Sri Lanka and Australia were the next champions as they won the tournament in 2014 and 2021. Now, the Suryakumar Yadav-led side will aim to become the first team to win the tournament three times, while New Zealand will look to win their first T20 World Cup title.
