India's unfortunate streak at the toss continued as they lost yet another one in the fourth Test of the ongoing five-match series against England. This marks the 14th consecutive toss loss for the Indian men’s team in international cricket, a streak that dates back several months. At this point in the series, England captain Ben Stokes has now won all four tosses against India's captain Shubman Gill. Statistically, this run means the chances of a run like this are 1 in 16,384 - it's fair to say this run has been unbelievable.

The last time India enjoyed a toss win in men's international cricket was during a T20I against England in January of 2025. Ever since, India has always played their matches, whether T20, ODI, or Tests, without the benefit of choosing to bat or bowl first. Tosses are generally regarded as a matter of luck; however, going on a stretch this long without winning a toss can affect preparations and teams' approach, knowing they can't choose. The continual loss of tosses has gathered discussions from fans and analysts alike and has added another quirky angle to India's cricketing year so far.

India ended Day 1 on 264/4

India concluded Day 1 of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford on a solid note, finishing at 264/4 in 83 overs after being put in to bat. Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (58) and KL Rahul (46) gave a solid platform before both fell quickly. Captain Shubman Gill made a gritty 30 before Sai Sudharsan steadied the innings with a composed 61. Rishabh Pant looked in touch with a fluent 37 before retiring with a niggle, which has raised doubts about his availability for the rest of the match.

At the close of play, Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur were both on 19 but fought bravely to see India through a tough final session. The English bowlers spread the wickets evenly but Chris Woakes, Ben Stokes, Liam Dawson, and Brydon Carse all took wickets, Woakes bowled tight lines and had an economical spell. India will start the second day off this a great platform to dig off from and see if Pant is fit to continue playing.
