IND vs ENG: Player Analysis: How did Yashasvi Jaiswal navigate the sessions in his 209-run knock?

Yashasvi Jaiswal was 22 years and 36 days old at the beginning of the second Test match. Now, he stands as the third-youngest player to achieve a double-century for India in men’s Tests. Vinod Kambli achieved two doubles before turning 22, with the first one against England when he was 21 years and 32 days old, starting the Wankhede Test in 1993. Sunil Gavaskar’s initial double century occurred in the 1971 Port of Spain Test when he was 21 years and 277 days old.

Jaiswal is only the second-youngest player to score a double-century in Test cricket in the last 20 years. Kraigg Brathwaite achieved this feat at the age of 21 years and 278 days during the 2014 Kingston Test against Bangladesh, where he scored 212 in the first innings.

Analyzing Jaiswal’s Stunning 209 Innings Breakdown by Sessions

India’s first-innings total of 396 against England marks their fourth lowest in Test cricket when there was a double-century. The lowest occurred in 2008 in Galle against Sri Lanka, where Virender Sehwag’s score of 201 was part of the 329 all-out innings, making it the lowest Test total for any team with a double-century.

Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 192 runs against England’s spinners, making it the joint-highest by any Indian batter in a Test innings against spin since 2002. This achievement is shared with Karun Nair, who also scored 192 runs against spin during his unbeaten 303 against England in 2016.

In Visakhapatnam, Yashasvi Jaiswal maintained a strike rate of 86.09 against spinners, showcasing excellent control with 91.03%. However, facing James Anderson, the solitary fast bowler in England’s attack, Jaiswal scored only 17 runs at a lower strike rate of 25.37. Nevertheless, he maintained control, registering 80.6% control percentage over the 67 balls he faced from Anderson.

Yashasvi Jaiswal joins an exclusive group of six players who scored double-centuries in men’s Tests without any of their teammates reaching 50. Sehwag’s 195 against Australia in the 2003 Melbourne Test was the previous highest in this category, and Jaiswal becomes the first Indian in this unique list.

In summary, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s innings stood out for its combination of ground strokes and daring aerial shots, highlighting his versatility and bold approach at the crease. A notable highlight was his bold step out against left-arm spinner Tom Hartley, launching the ball over long-on for a six to reach his century. Jaiswal’s seamless transition between various shot selections, executed with ease and confidence, added a dynamic and impressive dimension to his innings.
