Chennai Super Kings (CSK) began the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 with three successive defeats against the Rajasthan Royals (RR), Punjab Kings (PBKS), and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in both home and away venues. That was when they needed to get some heavy wins under their belt.

On paper, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) look like a young side with a nice blend of some experienced players, including the two T20 World Cup winners, Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube, along with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and some overseas players. But most of them are quite raw on average.

Moreover, their five-time title-winning captain, MS Dhoni, didn’t feature in a single fixture of the tournament for the first six weeks, which was also a concern for their lower-order batting and proper guidance in the middle.

Where Chennai Super Kings stand in IPL 2026 points table and what it means for qualification

The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side is currently at the fifth position of the points table, having earned six victories in 11 games at a net run rate of +0.185. They have dropped only two games in the last eight clashes to get their competition back on track, and the 103-run win over the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium recovered their NRR.

Gaikwad’s form was a concern for the camp, as the opener couldn’t get a bat on a ball from the beginning before getting two successive half-centuries against Mumbai and the Gujarat Titans.

Meanwhile, Sanju Samson has been their biggest contributor as the franchise has a 100%-win record whenever he crosses the 40-run mark in this IPL 2026.

How many matches CSK must win and the role of Net Run Rate (NRR) in playoff chances

The role of NRR won’t matter much in this competition, but in the case of the Super Kings’ qualification. It could come into the equation as the difference between the fourth and fifth sides of the event. Their NRR of +0.185 is already better than the Royals, who have six wins in 11 games to be in the fifth position of the table.

CSK will hope to get two more victories in their last three encounters, out of which one game will be against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in an away fixture. One other game will be against the Titans, which could prove to be the do-or-die on May 21.

Qualification scenarios explained — best-case, worst-case and must-win situations for Chennai Super Kings

The best case for the Super Kings will be to win all the remaining three clashes, especially the one against the Titans, which will eliminate one of the wins for the Shubman Gill-led side. CSK can’t drop the away fixture against Lucknow, who currently have the wooden spoon with them.

The five-time champions will not want the Rajasthan Royals to win any game apart from the one against the Titans, and the same factor regarding the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). They won’t have many issues with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and the Punjab Kings (PBKS), who are almost confirmed to qualify.

However, they can do a favor for the 2023 champions by beating the Rajasthan, Hyderabad, and Titans. CSK don't have any game against those two top sides for the remainder of the event.

Which teams CSK depend on and key results that could impact their playoff hopes

CSK will, as discussed, depend the most on the Bengaluru and Punjab Kings. They won’t want both Hyderabad and Rajasthan to win all the clashes along with the Titans. It was very unlikely for them to get among the top four sides of the competition once they lost all three clashes to start the campaign. But for them to be at the place was a tremendous effort.

In the batting department. Sanju Samson is their leading run-getter of the IPL 2026. He has smashed an overall 430 runs in 11 innings at an average of over 50 and a strike rate of 169.29, thanks to one century and two half-centuries at the best score of unbeaten 115 runs against the Delhi Capitals.

In the bowling group, Anshul Kamboj is the joint leading wicket-taker of the event. The right-arm pacer has picked 19 wickets in 11 innings at an average of 19.21, a strike rate of 12.52, and an economy rate of just over nine at the best bowling figures of 3/22 in an inning. Chennai’s next game will be at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.

Out of the last three clashes, CSK has two games away from home in Lucknow and Gujarat. If they play those games on the slow surfaces, it will be a challenge for both opposition batters to get the freedom with the bat and score the runs. They hope to continue the spin trap and end the home leg on a high.
