LBW Controversy: Why Rohit Sharma was not out and Rashid Khan was out— Explains

The two events were almost equal, at least from a pair of naked eyes that can barely find the amount of proportion to differentiate the two incidents except for the umpire's call— one is not out, and another one is out; Rohit Sharma survived, and Rashid Khan returned.

The two events were almost equal, at least from a pair of naked eyes that can barely find the amount of proportion to differentiate the two incidents except for the umpire's call— one is not out, and another one is out; Rohit Sharma survived, and Rashid Khan returned.

Mumbai Indians vs. Gujarat Titans (MI vs. GT), the wicket of Rashid Khan

Gujarat Titans had to overcome all the odds to win the important game of IPL 2025 at the Wankhede stadium against Mumbai Indians. Batting first, MI scored 155 for 8 wickets. Gujarat Titans was slowly but steadily chasing the total. After an interruption by rain, GT's target was reduced to 147 in 19 overs. Rashid Khan's wicket was crucial at that moment when Gujarat Titans needed 21 more runs to win in less than 2 overs. Top and middle-order regular batters were gone; it was between Mumbai Indians bowlers and Gujaratans all-rounders.

Rashid Khan is known for his spin bowling abilities but can add a good amount of runs. His wicket at the second ball of the 18th over could prove fatal for GT. Ashwani Kumar's delivery hit Khan, who is a right-handed batter, in the lower part of his right leg. A shout from MI for a possible LBW was turned down by the on-field umpire, which was later overturned when DRS was applied. According to the ball tracking system, the ball landed in line. So Rashid had to go.

Mumbai Indians vs. Rajasthan Royals (MI vs. RR), Rohit Sharma not out

Fazalhaq Farooqi's delivery went straight to hit Rohit Sharma's pad, and the on-field umpire's decision was out. The decision was overturned after a DRS check. The decision sparked controversy among cricket fans. A different angle showed that a ball was slightly outside the line, so Sharma was not out.

According to ICC rules, the ball must be more than 50 percent out to be considered outside the line. The umpire’s judgment can be overturned if more than half of the ball has pitched on the leg side.
