3 reasons Sri Lanka can beat India in the Test series 2026

Sri Lanka starts their home two-match Test series against India on August 15, with the first game taking place at the Galle International Cricket Stadium before the action moves to the second encounter from August 23 at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. This will be the first red-ball series for Sri Lanka at home against the Blue Brigade after nine years. 

The two sides faced each other in a three-day warm-up clash at the Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground in Colombo, where the tourists earned a victory by six wickets when they chased down 214 runs in the final session of the fixture.

Sri Lanka may not start as the favourites on paper, but the 2026 series presents a unique chance for them to challenge and even beat the Indian side. There are several reasons for the Shubman Gill-led side to face a stiff task against the Sri Lankan side.

Sri Lanka, however, enter the Test series with strong motivation to rewrite history. They haven’t beaten the blue brigade in a Test series for several years, but with the home support, familiar conditions, and the balanced squad, this could be the best opportunity for the Dhananjaya de Silva-led side to turn the tide.

Here are the three reasons Sri Lanka can beat India in the Test series 2026-

#1 India’s recent struggles against spin in spin-friendly conditions-

Galle will be a massive challenge for the Indian batters, especially to face the spinners. Colombo won’t be different either, as the surface would assist the spinners and create massive pressure on the batters. Prabath Jayasuriya, the left-arm spinner, has picked up 125 wickets in 43 innings of the five-day format at an average of 32.0. 

Meanwhile, India’s batters have struggled badly against the spinners, even at home. The two left-arm spinners, Ajaz Patel and Mitchell Santner, went through the batting department of the blue brigade, who were rich with experience in that period in the presence of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

The rest of the batters, including Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and others, continued to struggle against the South African side in late 2025 when they came up against Simon Harmer and Keshav Maharaj. 

#2 India’s inexperienced bowling line-up-

It may sound a bit harsh, but India won’t have much experience in their bowling line-up for the Sri Lanka tour. Ravindra Jadeja is their lone veteran spinner in the squad, along with Kuldeep Yadav, who has been hot and cold in the last few months for the blue brigade and has played only a handful of Tests since his debut in 2019 at the SCG against Australia.

Apart from Jadeja and Kuldeep, India will rely on either Manav Suthar or Saransh Jain for their third spin option. Even though the former was excellent against Afghanistan on debut, he will face a massive challenge in foreign conditions.

In the pace department, the responsibility will be on Mohammed Siraj, who will miss the premier pacer, Jasprit Bumrah. The latter has been ruled out of the series with an injury. 

#3 Sri Lanka’s recent strong record at home-

Sri Lanka have been superb at home in the last couple of years in Test cricket. Since the beginning of 2024, they have played seven Test matches and earned four victories, losing only a couple of red-ball formats, while one game ended in a draw, with a win-loss ratio of two.

For them, Dinesh Chandimal is the leading run-getter in the last couple of years out of 11 innings at an average of 59.63 and a strike rate of 49.81 with five fifties and a couple of centuries at the best score of 116.

In the bowling department, Jayasuriya is the most successful bowler for SL at home since January 2024, having collected 41 wickets in just 13 innings at an average of 30, thanks to his five five-wicket hauls.
