Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) finally silenced years of heartbreak by clinching their inaugural IPL title last season, defeating Punjab Kings in a high-stakes final in Ahmedabad. This monumental victory during the tournament’s 19th edition marked the end of a long-standing drought for the franchise. As the new season approaches, expectations for another high-scoring spectacle are soaring. Fans are eager to see if the defending champions can maintain their momentum or if a new powerhouse will emerge to claim the prestigious trophy in this year's highly anticipated competition.

The previous campaign saw Sai Sudharsan dominate the league, securing the Orange Cap with a remarkable 759 runs for the Gujarat Titans. His consistent performances have set a lofty benchmark for the upcoming 2026 season. All eyes are now on established icons like Virat Kohli and Sanju Samson, alongside explosive talents such as Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Jacob Bethell. With aggressive hitters like Finn Allen also in the mix, the battle for batting supremacy promises to be a thrilling highlight of this year’s historic T20 circuit.

Here are top 4 possible contendors for Orange Cap ahead of IPL 2026;

Aiden Markram

Aiden Markram heads into the IPL in excellent form, having delivered consistent performances at the top of the order for South Africa national cricket team in the recently concluded ICC Men's T20 World Cup. He scored 286 runs in eight innings at a striking rate of 165.31, providing stability and intent to the Proteas’ batting lineup. His unbeaten 86 against New Zealand national cricket team, which included a rapid half-century off just 19 balls, highlighted his ability to shift gears effortlessly.

Last season, Markram built a strong opening partnership with Mitchell Marsh for Lucknow Super Giants. While Marsh often took on the role of aggressor, Markram played the perfect supporting hand, anchoring the innings with composure. Heading into the new season, he is expected to take on a more prominent role in Lucknow’s batting setup. With his ability to balance aggression and stability, Markram could emerge as the backbone of the team’s top order and a key contributor throughout the tournament.

Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli is commonly included in discussions about who might contend for this year’s Orange Cap. Kohli has accumulated the most runs (8661) in IPL history and is also currently the leading run-scorer (657) in this year’s IPL (only two players are ahead). Kohli, who has participated in 267 IPL matches, holds both the all-time IPL record and the single-season record for most runs scored (973) in any season (2016).

The structure of RCB’s squad allows Kohli to base his batting strategy from the perspective of powers, and then transition to accelerating once a solid foundation is built. In order for RCB to win their second consecutive title, Kohli’s ability to provide a foundation from the top of the order will be critical. Kohli’s consistency, his wealth of experience and his desire to score runs make him a major player in this year’s IPL. If he has a good year, it will help RCB go deep into the playoffs as well as have the opportunity to win the Orange Cap for a third time in his remarkable IPL career.

Ishan Kishan

Ishan Kishan in IPL 2025

Ishan Kishan's unexpected return to form came in 2026 after he had a breakout season in 2025, where he produced 517 runs over 10 innings, including two centuries and a stunning 101* to lead Jharkhand to victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He was selected back onto the Indian team because of this performance and capitalized on that opportunity by scoring 317 runs in 10 innings during India’s successful campaign towards winning the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Kishan has potentially been the best number 3 spin hitter in the league, but he has been overshadowed by Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head at the top of the order for Sunrisers Hyderabad. With both of those players through the first half of the tournament, this puts even more pressure on Kishan to deliver to ensure Hyderabad has success this summer. He started the 2025 season with a fantastic 106* off 47 balls, but the rest of his season led to a big disappointment. However, in 2026, Kishan has an opportunity to redeem himself and have a successful and solid season.

Yashasvi Jaiswal

With Sanju Samson gone to the Chennai Super Kings, Yashasvi Jaiswal has big shoes to fill leading the batting for the Rajasthan Royals. This 24-year-old will likely become a bigger part of the team batting at the top of the order for the Royals next season, likely opening the batting with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. With this new role, Jaiswal may need to change his game, moving from a more aggressive stroke player to a steady run-builder who is able to set the table and establish a good foundation for the team to build on.

Last season, Jaiswal scored 559 runs in 14 innings, demonstrating that he can deliver on a consistent basis when given the proper opportunity. He has long been a secondary player to stars like Jos Buttler and Samson on the team and now he has an opportunity to shine. With this new found responsibility and an integral role in the order, Jaiswal will be hungry to have a great impact. A great season can see him as a top run scorer and a candidate for the Orange Cap.
