Before the IPL 2025, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to host a mega auction. It means that the IPL teams will need to release most of the players.
As per the latest RevSportz report, every IPL team can be allowed to retain a maximum of four players before the IPL 2025 auction. While the last mega auction was held ahead of the IPL 2022, every existing team could retain a maximum of four players, and each of the two new teams could select a maximum of three players before the auction.

RTM can return
Meanwhile, with the RTM, a franchise can retain their latest released players at the auction.
During the IPL 2022 mega auction, the Right to Match or RTM wasn’t available. It hasn’t been used since the IPL 2018. However, it is likely to be a serious option for the IPL 2025 mega auction. The latest RevSportz suggests that two RTMs will be used for each team during the IPL 2025 mega auction.
RTM is always a controversial topic, as it has supporters and anti-supporters. Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin doesn’t like the RTM rules. He once claimed, “If a franchise has released a player because they don’t see him in their top four or five, then what gives them the right to jump in during an auction?”
Most important topic ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction
Talking about the retention for the IPL 2025, one of the biggest questions is will Chennai Super Kings (CSK) retain MS Dhoni? Former Indian captain Dhoni is one of the greatest members of the CSK. However, there is no confirmation about Dhoni’s participation in the IPL 2025.
Every team is waiting for the retention and RTM rules before the IPL 2025 mega auction, as they can then sort and plan the team ahead of the mega auction.
