Former Karachi Kings star Aaron Summers sentenced to 10 months for sexually abusing teenage fan

The former Karachi Kings and Hobart Hurricanes star player, Aaron Summers, has been jailed for abusing a teenage fan, which has come as a bizarre revelation in Australian cricket. He groomed the girl for a long time and abused her despite meeting her at a game and will now spend the next 10 months behind bars, as the reports have claimed. 

The Tasmanian Supreme Court, Helen Wood, reckoned that Summers used his profile as a sportsperson and gained access to the young people as he was playing for the Hurricanes in the Big Bash League (BBL) when he met the girl and her friends at a game in December 2017 in Hobart.

Summers, apart from playing for the Hobart Hurricanes and the Karachi side, has featured for the Southern Punjab side in Pakistan and the Tasmania domestic side and the Tasmania Under-23s. He has smashed only 42 runs in four innings of List A cricket, along with picking five wickets at an economy rate of 7.54.

In the 2018/19 season, Summers played two games for the Kings and gave away 62 runs in eight overs at an economy rate of 7.75 without any success.

The Australia-born player played for the Hurricanes in the 2017/18 season of the BBL and bowled three overs in his only game at an expensive economy rate of 10.33 without any wicket.

During a game on January 15 in 20198, the pair of Summers and the girl spoke across the boundary before connecting on Instagram and Snapchat. On the very next day, they arranged to meet, with the former picking the girl up and driving he to a school at night.

The cricketer, who was 21 by that time, laid down a doona at the school before assaulting the girl twice. Justice Wood revealed that Summers knew she was in Grade 9 or 10 and below the age of sexual consent.

Summers continued to contact the girl after the abuse and sent her explicit images, with the final communication taking place in early 2021, as he later pleaded guilty to two counts of penetrative sexual abuse of a child and one count of grooming a child with the intent to expose them.
