How Abhishek went from 1,947 runs to history: Strike rate, sixes, and three centuries

Abhishek Sharma made history in the 3rd T20I against West Indies in Indore by scoring a half-century in just 18 balls. It was the eighth time he had reached a fifty in 20 balls or fewer in T20I cricket, a record no other player has matched more than three times. Having made his India debut in July 2024, the Indian opener has established himself as one of the most explosive opening batters in international cricket. He also ranks among the top batters in the ICC T20I rankings.

The left-hand batter has continued to achieve major milestones in T20I cricket. He previously scored a century in just 30 balls against Afghanistan, setting a record for the fastest T20I century by an Indian batter. His career includes three centuries and 14 half-centuries, with a highest score of 135 not out. His aggressive batting has also helped him become one of India's leading six-hitters. This year, he has scored 921 runs in 32 matches at a strike rate of 206.50, including one century and eight half-centuries. He has also hit 68 sixes in T20Is this year, matching Suryakumar Yadav's record for the most sixes by an Indian batter in a calendar year.

Abhishek has now joined India's elite group of batters with 2,000 or more T20I runs. The other members of this group are Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul. His ability to score quickly, hit boundaries and reach milestones in fewer balls has made him a key player for India in the shortest format. Despite a few setbacks, the Indian batter continues to impress with his attacking style and remains one of the most exciting batters to watch in T20I cricket.

What Abhishek’s record means for India’s T20 plans and the rest of the WI series

Abhishek Sharma’s record of becoming the fastest player to reach 2,000 T20I runs highlights his importance to India’s T20 plans. The SRH opener’s aggressive batting at the top of the order helps India get quick starts and puts pressure on opposition bowlers. His ability to score runs at a high strike rate makes him a key player for India in the shortest format.

The southpaw from Punjab has also given India confidence with his consistent performances. His record-breaking half-centuries and centuries show that he can change the course of a match in a short time. However, the left-hand batter will need to maintain his consistency and make the right decisions against different bowling attacks.

As the T20I series against West Indies continues, Abhishek will look to build on his record-breaking performance and help India win more matches. His attacking style could play a major role in the remaining games, while the West Indies bowlers will aim to find ways to restrict him. Fans will be eager to see whether the Indian opener can continue his impressive form and create more records.
