First Lockie Ferguson, then Glenn Maxwell; injury concerns have clouded over Punjab Kings' (PBKS) camp from the initial part of the IPL 2025. Ahead of the match versus Chennai Super Kings (CSK), PBKS skipper informed about the Aussie all-rounder's injury issue; Maxwell broke his finger during a practice session, and that forced him out of the ongoing Indian Premier League.
Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting has addressed the ongoing injury crisis in the squad. He revealed in the media brief that the management is looking for a perfect replacement but has yet to find the right choice. The former Australia international mentioned how the Pakistan Super League (PSL) is causing trouble for the IPL side to find the replacement.
Pakistan cricket is currently experiencing the tenth season of PSL; the league contains 6 teams with multiple internationally reputed players. Some of them tried their luck in the IPL 2025 mega auction but did not succeed and then moved to PSL. Players like Finn Allen and Jason Holder, who have experience in multiple T20 leagues, are now part of PSL; like IPL, PSL is also now in their peak season.
"Maxi's only been a couple of days; Lockie's been two or three weeks. And with the PSL happening at the same time, there's not a lot of high-quality replacements out there, to be honest. So we've just been patient," PBKS head coach said.
Pointing said that they can make some signings in the upcoming days. For that, they are looking at all the possible options they have. Pointing further, it was informed that some Indian talents are currently with the squad; they have a chance to prove their value to the franchise. It is clear that PBKS wants to open all the doors for the best outcome, but with patience. The former cricketer, now a coach, does not want to take any decision rapidly.
"We'll actually take a couple of guys to Dharamsala with us; a couple of guys trained with us yesterday, and they will come with us to Dharamsala. We'll have a closer look at them, and they might find themselves with a Punjab contract going forward," Ponting said.
He further added that they will take the final call this week, before the 12th game. Punjab Kings will next take on Lucknow Super Giants on May 4, Sunday, at Dharamshala.
