India have survived a thriller by two runs during the contest of the one-off T20I against Japan at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Kanto, but the most viral moment was when the umpires overturned their wide decision after Axar Patel's protest, having delivered the ball in the final over of the innings.

India’s captain, Shreyas Iyer, won the toss and decided to bat first on a surface which was slow and low for the batters. The visitors kept Vaibhav Sooryavanshi away from the playing XI and went ahead with the opening partnership between Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson.

Axar Patel protests, umpires reverse wide call in tense final over vs Japan

It was the third delivery of the fifth and final over of India’s defence when Axar Patel went with a wide delivery as the batter, Alexander Shiral-Patmore, went for a reverse sweep again. On the previous delivery, he made the same attempt and got a wide from the standing umpire.

After the same decision on the third delivery, Samon and Axar were not happy with the decision as Shreyas Iyer had a chat with the square leg umpire, Chris Brown. Both the umpires got into a discussion, but the on-field call stayed. However, just a moment later, the decision was reversed.

It was a massive call from the umpire to overturn the decision. Axar clearly voiced his displeasure at umpire Chris Thurgte. That overturned decision was incredibly vital as the blue brigade earned the victory by two runs.

India made a nightmarish start with the bat as Abhishek was dismissed for a golden duck. Ishan Kishan also failed for his three runs. Iyer collected 16 runs off 12 balls at a strike rate of 133.33 as the tourists were restricted to 32/4 in their five overs. Charlie Hara-Hinze returned with figures of 2/17 in two overs.

Japan, having made a weak start with the bat, fell short of the target by just two runs. Washington Sundar returned with figures of 2/13 in his two overs. It was the 200th win for the Indian side in the shortest format of the game.
