Big Bash League (BBL), run by Cricket Australia, is also very popular among the T20 leagues held around the world. This league started in 2011 and features matches between 8 city-based franchises. Many veterans and fans consider the BBL to be the second-best T20 league after the IPL, because each season offers something new to watch, and Cricket Australia also makes efforts to improve it. In this regard, CA is now preparing to take a major step.

BBL matches have so far mainly been held in Australia, but a major change could be seen in the 2026-27 season. According to recent reports, Cricket Australia plans to hold the first match of the upcoming BBL season in India, with the city of Chennai being targeted for this. Recently, CA officials—Head of Business Operations Phil Rigby and Head of Competition Development and Strategy Margot Harley—visited India. The report states that this move by Cricket Australia is aimed at targeting audiences in India and South Asia, as both groups are cricket enthusiasts.

It is not new for Australia to host its sports competitions in another country. The Australian rugby team hosts its matches in Las Vegas, which is under a five-year contract. In this context, there are now plans to hold Big Bash League matches abroad as well, to increase its popularity and to generate interest among people from other countries.

A BBL match is not possible in India without BCCI's approval

The report confirms that Cricket Australia plans to hold the first match of the upcoming BBL season in India, but officials have not finalized the proposal yet. The board must secure permission from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the broadcasters before moving forward. The BCCI’s approval remains essential, as nothing can proceed in India without it. Ultimately, the Indian board will make the final decision. If the plan goes through, fans could witness the excitement of the Big Bash League at Chennai’s Chepauk Stadium.

Perth Scorchers team may tour if the BBL match is held in Chennai, as several Indian businessmen are showing interest in this team. Cricket Australia has already taken several steps to increase audience interest and is introducing new rules as well. However, it has not yet been fully successful in winning over Indian fans. In this context, this move could prove to be quite significant. It will be interesting to see what updates come in this matter going forward.
