BCCI to give new role to Hardik Pandya for India ahead of ODI World Cup 2027
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to give a new role to their premier all-rounder, Hardik Pandya, for the national side, ahead of the ODI World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

For India to earn success in any ICC event, the responsibility remains on their premier all-rounder, Hardik Pandya, who can offer them overs with the ball and can contribute with the bat in the lower order. That was the same situation when they lifted the trophy during the T20 World Cup 2026 and the Champions Trophy 2025.
Ahead of the ODI World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) aims to increase the workload for Hardik Pandya and offer him a new role with the ball to bring the best balance in their playing eleven.
BCCI expects Hardik Pandya to bowl full quota of 10 overs in ODI WC 2027
Hardik, reportedly, has intensified his workload as he prepares to bowl the full quota of 10 overs. Given his long history of injuries, he has to be careful not to push his body beyond the limit and take care of his fitness, which previously ruled him out in the middle of the ODI World Cup 2023 at home.
“Hardik is expected to play a big role in the ODI setup since the World Cup will be played on fast and bouncy pitches in South Africa. He can lend the perfect balance. But he has to convince the selectors and the team management that he will be available to bowl 10 overs. He may not be required to do so in every match. The captain may end up bowling him for 6-7 overs in most matches.” The TOI has reported.
“He should be available if the captain needs more from him. The selectors are also looking at other seam-bowling options. Nitish Kumar Reddy has increased his bowling workload in domestic cricket as well. Hardik has been increasing his workload.” It has been addressed.
The Times of India (TOI) has reported that the BCCI members have asked HP to be ready for bowling 10 overs if the captain needs him. On the fast and bouncy pitches of South Africa, it will be a massive advantage for the blue brigade.
“He has worked on his action to bowl in-swingers as well without compromising on pace. That’s why he has been entrusted to bowl with the new ball in T20s. He feels his body is ready to cope with the rigors of bowling 10 overs in ODIs. He understands his body well enough and is working towards staying fit to bowl 10 overs.” The reports have claimed.
What impact will Hardik’s 10 overs have in ODIs for India?
In case Hardik becomes ready to bowl the full quota of 10 overs, they will have two premier pacers, Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah, contributing 20 overs, along with the all-rounder going through the full quota of 10 overs. If they decide to keep Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav, then it becomes a full 50 overs.
In case one of the bowlers struggles, they will have the option of Axar Patel or Harshit Rana. On the bouncy surface in South Africa, the Indian team may also opt to go with four fast bowlers with a spin all-rounder and the wrist spinner.
India missed the golden chance of lifting the title under Rohit Sharma in the previous final, having lost to Australia. But they will hope to go a step further and complete the dream to end the drought of 16 years.
