With the number of ODIs decreasing for the Indian side, the BCCI has decided to go a step further and hold a special meeting on the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma- the two former captains- post the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa. This will be done to keep them in the setup with an eye on the 2027 World Cup.

Rohit and Kohli haven’t cleared their future yet in terms of featuring in the World Cup. There has been advice to keep back-ups in case the duo decides to go off or their form decline to be selected for the showcase event. The reports have claimed that the BCCI officials, coach Gautam Gambhir, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, are likely to sit together in Ahmedabad after the third ODI.

“It is very important that players of Rohit and Kohli’s stature are given clarity about what is expected of them and how the current management views their roles. They can’t just be playing with uncertainty.” The reports of The Times of India (TOI) are addressed.

The understandable concern is how fast they would be able to hit the ground running and will be able to get their fitness matched to the stimulation of the game. In Australia, it was clear that Rohit was taking more time to get settled and didn’t look as aggressive as he was during the Champions Trophy 2025.

“It is expected that he continues to lead by example as a fearless batter at the top of the order. The conditions were tough in Australia, but it did look like he was avoiding taking risks. Both are expected to lead the batting to make it easier for the rest of the younger batters around them.” The BCCI source revealed.

The other issue will be regarding their selection apart from ODIs. They have been suggested to play a few Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) 2025/26 games. After the end of the home New Zealand series in early 2027, their next assignment will be in England in July.
