Ravichandran Ashwin announced retirement from Indian Premier League on August 27. Ashwin made his IPL debut in 2009 with the Chennai Super Kings. He has played 221 matches in the IPL and has bagged 187 wickets at an impressive economy of 7.20. With the bat, he has scored 833 runs which includes one half century. In his 16 years IPL career he has represented five IPL teams.
Though retired from IPL, Ashwin has indicated that he will be playing in overseas leagues now. Having retired from all forms of international cricket earlier in the year, this brings him the opportunity to see his future with the overseas leagues which are thriving in the recent years. The potential opportunities for Ashwin lies in SA20 and MLC leagues which have garnered immense traction over the years.
“Special day and hence a special beginning. They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today,” Ashwin posted on his social media handles.
“Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years and most importantly the @IPL and the @BCCI for what they have given me until now. Look forward to enjoying and making the most of what’s ahead of me,” wrote Ashwin.
Ashwin played a crucial part of CSK’s IPL title wins in 2010 and 2011. He returned to CSK ahead of Indian Premier League 2025 and had tough time coming among wickets. He played nine games and bagged just seven wickets. Apart from CSK, he represented, Rising Pune Super Giant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals.
