India and the West Indies are facing off in a crucial Super 8 match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 at Eden Gardens. The contest carries knockout-like intensity, as the winner will advance to the semi-finals while the losing side will be eliminated from the tournament.

After winning the toss, India elected to bowl first in the final Super 8 fixture. West Indies openers provided a steady start to the innings. Following the dismissal of Shai Hope, the in-form Shimron Hetmyer walked to the crease and immediately shifted gears, scoring at an impressive strike rate of 225 to put the Indian bowlers under pressure.

India, however, struck at a crucial juncture when Jasprit Bumrah delivered a vital breakthrough. With the West Indies building momentum, Bumrah bowled with precision and had Hetmyer caught behind. The dismissal proved to be a turning point, swinging the momentum back in India’s favour at a critical stage of the match.

Bumrah’s Double Blow Turns the Game

Just when India sensed an opportunity, the West Indies middle order increased the scoring rate. After Shai Hope’s dismissal, Shimron Hetmyer came to the crease and shifted the momentum immediately. The left-hander attacked from the start, hitting boundaries and sixes with confidence. Alongside him, Roston Chase accelerated as well, turning a steady start into a strong platform. Their aggressive partnership put India under pressure and briefly tilted the match in the West Indies’ favour.

Sensing the momentum shifting, India captain Suryakumar Yadav brought back his strike bowler Jasprit Bumrah in search of a breakthrough. The move proved decisive. Bumrah delivered a crucial over, dismissing both set batters in quick succession. He first removed Hetmyer to break the dangerous stand and then sent Chase back soon after, bringing India back into the contest.

Bumrah once again got the better of Hetmyer, dismissing him for the sixth time in 10 T20 innings. The in-form batter edged the third ball of the over while attempting a pull shot. Although Hetmyer opted for the DRS after being given out, the third umpire confirmed a clear edge. He had to walk back after scoring 27 runs off just 12 balls, marking a key turning point in the match.

Earlier, the West Indies made a strong start through captain Shai Hope and Roston Chase, who built a solid partnership. Hope played calmly, finding gaps and rotating the strike. Chase played more attacking shots and punished loose deliveries. Their partnership made it difficult for the Indian bowlers in the early overs.

Both teams have won one match each in the Super 8 stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. India kept their hopes alive with a 72-run win over Zimbabwe. However, India’s net run rate (-0.100) is lower than the West Indies’ (+1.791).
