South African batting prodigy Dewald Brevis eyes another significant milestone ahead of South Africa's upcoming ODI series starting on August 19. The 22-year-old Protea youngster has been on a roll in the ongoing Australia tour. There are tell-tale signs to conclude that the cricketer has come a long way. Brevis put on a show in the second T20I by smashing his career-best 125 to power South Africa to a thumping series-levelling win. He subsequently followed it up with a brilliant half-century in the decider, which unfortunately came in a losing cause.

His exploits with the bat didn't go unnoticed. Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the five-time champions, were keeping a very close eye on Brevis's recent run in Australia. Due to the non-availability of a few players, Brevis was featured as a replacement player for CSK at the fag end of the last season. Needless to say, Brevis had a promising run with the Yellow Brigade in the last season, averaging nearly 40 with two half-century scores to his name. Undoubtedly, CSK wanted to sign him for the entirety of the IPL 2026 season, a move which sparked public outrage as the fans accused CSK of violating the auction rules.

While the future for the young batting star looks bright, there seems to be another milestone waiting for him in white-ball cricket. For the first time in his professional international career, Brevis could be in with a chance to feature in the three-match ODI series against Australia.

ODI debut on the cards for Brevis

According to the latest reports, Brevis could be all set to make his ODI debut for South Africa on Tuesday. The Proteas are scheduled to play the first ODI of the three-match series against Australia on August 19 in Cairns. Speculations of his maiden ODI appearance have been rife. Brevis has already made appearances for South Africa in the T20Is and Tests. While most of his appearances have come in the shortest format, Brevis also managed to make his Test debut against Zimbabwe, very recently in June. The ODI format is the only format that has been left untouched till now.

All of that could change when the first ODI game gets underway later today. South Africa, in the quest for bringing about the right balance between youth and experience are actively on the lookout for a young all-format specialist batter, who can be an adaptable assest across all conditions. Brevis roared with the bat in the recently concluded T20I series, finishing as the highest run getter. South Africa would be hoping that he fires with the bat again to take South Africa to a rare ODI series win in Australia.

Brevis is far too familiar with the 50-over format. In List-A cricket, the 22-year-old batting icon has amassed 1065 runs in 24 innings at a remarkable average of 48.40. In addition, the youngster has also slammed four centuries and seven half-centuries, making him an obvious force to reckon with in the domestic 50-over circuit.
