CSK sign Spencer Johnson as Nathan Ellis replacement ahead of IPL 2026
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed Australian left-arm quick Spencer Johnson for INR 1.5 crore as an injury replacement for Nathan Ellis.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed Australian fast bowler Spencer Johnson as a replacement for injured Nathan Ellis for the upcoming IPL 2026 season. Ellis will miss the season due to a recurring hamstring injury he suffered earlier this month.
The Aussie quick was initially picked by the Quetta Gladiators as a direct signing for PSL 2026. However, he pulled out of the PSL for personal reasons and has now joined CSK for IPL 2026, which begins on March 28. He has been signed for INR 1.5 crore and will join Matt Henry as the second overseas fast bowler in the CSK squad.
Johnson is the latest player to leave the Pakistan Super League and join the IPL, which is known for its high salaries and popularity. He previously played in the IPL for the Gujarat Titans and the Kolkata Knight Riders. In 2024, he represented the newly inducted Gujarat Titans, playing five matches and taking four wickets. The following season, the young star played for KKR but managed only one wicket in four matches, finishing with a high bowling average of 133, which was disappointing.
With his experience in Indian conditions and a fresh opportunity at CSK, Johnson will join a pace unit that includes Khaleel Ahmed, Matt Henry and Jamie Overton and strengthen the team’s pace attack for IPL 2026.

Why Nathan Ellis has been ruled out of IPL 2026
Nathan Ellis was ruled out of IPL 2026 due to an old hamstring injury, which is a big loss for both his team and fans. Known for his sharp variations and effectiveness, Ellis’s absence leaves a clear gap in the bowling lineup.
A hamstring injury happens when one or more of the three muscles at the back of the thigh are damaged or strained. These muscles are important for bending the knee and extending the hip, both key movements in running and bowling.
Hamstring injuries are usually divided into three grades. Grade 1 is a mild strain or overstretching, Grade 2 is a partial tear of the muscle fibres, and Grade 3 is a complete tear, which often needs surgery.
