David Warner Cements His Standing as an ODI Legend
David Warner over the last five years has been written off on countless occasions.

David Warner over the last five years has been written off on countless occasions. A response though has always been followed when the knifes have come out. In 2019, after the ball-tampering ban came to an end David Warner had a lot of doubters come his way. His response was strong and simple as he went on to have a massive World Cup comeback.
Two years later, David Warner did the same when he finished as the player of the tournament in a successful T20 World Cup campaign. In the ongoing World Cup, David Warner had scores of 162, 104, and 81 in consecutive games. His Test form has been under the scanner for the last two years. Batting down the order for a brief period earlier in the year and having some silent games prompted some raised eyebrows.
At that moment it felt odd to see one of Australia’s greatest openers batting down the order. At 37, while everyone has been looking at workload management David Warner has come out with a different approach.
He has been on tour constantly since February, barring the two Tests he missed due to injury. Over the last six months, he took part in a full IPL Season, six Tests in England, and all the ODIs Australia played in the lead-up to the World Cup. In the ODIs coming into the tournament, David Warner looked at his vintage best.
His experience and the enjoyment he has with the Indian crowd hinted that he could have a big tournament. The World Cup has only proved those hints to be right. David Warner, who has already mapped out his retirement plan is on his way. With his career likely to be through by the end of the 2024 T20 World Cup, David Warner is doing his part to ensure he finishes his ODI Career in style.
His ODI career though remains probably the best out of his three formats. His recent struggles in Test Cricket tend to mask his ability in the other formats, which tends to dilute his achievements in the format. Among the Australian greats alone, David Warner’s stats and impact stand tall despite playing fewer games than them.
In World Cups, the numbers get even better. with 600+ runs in 2019 and a run away from 500 this time, the numbers say it all. His style adds to his brilliance. With power and placement, David Warner gets annoying to contain as he tends to deal in ones and twos just as well as he can with boundaries. He is always busy out in the middle and loves to tease the fielders.
His ability to evolve with time makes him all the more valuable. While scoring rates were high in 2019, the style of batting continues to change. In 2023, his intent has gone up with Warner playing the role of early enforcer really well.
His fitness is another aspect that keeps him above the rest. Having played some long innings in the tournament, David Warner has looked unfazed and not as fatigued as some of the others who played big knocks. On the field, he still patrols the spots which tend to get the most work. He is still doing the hard yards in the outfield with ease despite not having the shoulder he used to.
His exceptional ODI Career could be coming to a close this week. It has been a career that has been appreciated but also criticized. Regardless, he is a player likely to be missed by his side and it will be a big moment when he does truly call it a day.
