The IPL 2026 season marks the first time that Delhi Capitals will compete with their newly expanded support staff after they hired John Mooney to serve as their fielding coach. The 44-year-old replaces Anton Roux and Gnaneswara Rao, who were part of the setup during the previous campaign.

The Delhi-based franchise is aiming to improve its overall performance after finishing fifth in IPL 2025, narrowly missing out on a playoff spot. The management has implemented important changes to enhance the team’s fielding capabilities because the new season is about to start.

The former Irish cricketer brings valuable international experience to the role. His coaching history includes work with Afghanistan and West Indies teams and his most recent position with Afghanistan during the Asia Cup competition. His coaching experience combined with his England Cricket Board certifications establishes him as a qualified professional.

Experienced support staff set to guide Delhi franchise in IPL 2026

The new fielding coach will join an experienced coaching group led by head coach Hemang Badani. The support staff also includes Munaf Patel as bowling coach, Ian Bell as assistant coach, and Venugopal Rao as Director of Cricket.

The franchise will miss former England captain Kevin Pietersen who worked as mentor during the previous season but will not return for his mentoring duties in IPL 2026. The Capitals will once again be led by Axar Patel because the team wants to build on their previous season successes which will help them win their first IPL championship.

The former Ireland all-rounder brings extensive experience from his playing and coaching background

The Dublin-born cricketer represented Ireland in 64 ODIs and 27 T20Is between 2006 and 2015 and during his playing career. The ICC tournaments included multiple events which lead to his best known achievement of scoring the victory runs against England during the 2011 World Cup which remains among Ireland's greatest triumphs. The left-handed batter and medium pacer made contributions through his batting and bowling abilities while his quick fielding talent became known throughout the game.

The Delhi franchise intends to improve their fielding performance through his appointment because fielding becomes essential to win competitive T20 games. The team will create their first IPL championship victory path by combining experienced players with innovative concepts as they prepare for IPL 2026.
