June 20 is a significant day in the history of Indian cricket—it's the day that we have seen players emerge time and again, players who have shaped the landscape of Indian Test cricket. In 1996, it was the debuts of two boys playing against England at Lord's—Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly. Ganguly played a fluent 131, becoming just the tenth Indian to write himself into the record books with a century on debut, while Dravid just missed out on a century, scoring 95. Both went on to be at the heart of India's batting line-up and lead India through its successes and transitional phases with elegance, a will to win, and leadership.

Another fifteen years later, in 2011, on the same date, we saw another huge debut. Virat Kohli made his Test debut against the West Indies, alongside Abhinav Mukund and swing bowler Praveen Kumar. Kohli's start to his Test career was humble, and yet he went on to rebuke and redefine Indian Test cricket with aggressive intent, a fitness regime, and aggressive captaincy. His batting took down bowlers around continents, and he took India to memorable away victories while having a successful career where he is regarded as one of the greatest all-format cricketers India has ever had.

What makes June 20 even more significant is the transition between eras: the calmness of Dravid, the aggressive leadership of Ganguly, and the intensity of Kohli. All three have moved the needle on excellence in Indian cricket. All established benchmarks for generations to follow. These players are not merely statistics on a page; they are stories of resilience, growth, and unrivaled passion.

A New Beginning in 2025

On June 20, 2025, history takes a turn again, beginning India’s first Test in the World Test Championship (2025-27) cycle against England. This is also the first Test after the retirement of a legendary captain—perhaps Rohit Sharma—and allows new blood to take hold of Indian cricket's future.

Among that new blood is a name to remember: Sai Sudharsan. Having shown temperament and good domestic performances across formats, Sai stepped into the red-ball game on a date that has given Indian cricket many heroes. As fans go back (hopefully) to watching Test matches again with anticipation for this new era, they will be hoping Sai Sudharsan carries forward the legacy of the June 20 heroes of Indian Test cricket.
