Despite a dream debut as the Test captain of Team India, Shubman Gill may have to serve a penalty for a technical issue.
Gill was spotted in black socks during his batting on Day 1 at the Headingley stadium in Leeds. Due to the revised rule, no player on the field is allowed to wear black socks. The newly appointed Indian skipper made that mistake. The act was deliberately done or by mistake; it is yet to be known. The final call will be taken by the match referee.
As per the International Cricket Council's (ICC) clause 19.45, players in Test matches must wear socks that are white, cream, or light grey. Any other color(s) worn is subject to repercussions, including fines on match fees. This revised rule came into effect in May 2023. Wearing black socks in a Test match can be considered a level 1 offense. Due to this, the right-handed batter could be fined 10 to 20 percent of his match fee and potentially receive a demerit point.

Team India experienced a dream start under a new captain
After the retirements of Ravichandran Ashwin, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli, BCCI selected Shubman Gill as the captain of team India's Test setup. The beginning of the new era under Shubman Gill's leadership so far has been no less than a dream. Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (101) scored a hundred and became the first ever Indian batter to claim a ton in Headingley.
Shubman came to bat at number 4, and he created a record with an unbeaten 127. After Day 1, India was 359 for the loss of 3 wickets. So far, proving many critics wrong, Team India is currently in the driver's seat against the host, England.
